So I've recently come into contact with your videos. While I don't fully agree with all the rankings you give some mechs, your data, understanding and Tabletop focus make things very sound. What gets me is your avatar, it's such a squishy little thing that is rather cute while talking about war machines and jamming out to heavy metal that includes the line "I feel the vibrations!" and i am like 'i'm sure you do you squishy little dude you' Anyway keep up the good work and I am looking forward to your eventual medium and assault mech tier lists
Thank you for producing a video that jumps straight to the point (instead of wasting a bunch of time with a pre-intro bit, then an overproduced intro, then a sponsor plug, then a request to subscribe, then a pre-content bit before getting to the actual content), as well as for dispensing all of the information in a direct manner.
I've been playing BT for 30 years, and the thing that completely changed my experience was ditching hexes and getting a couple of tape measures. In my opinion, it's so much more liberating and enjoyable. It does take some resources, but I highly recommend it.
A solid list of freebies. Those RATs are my favorite resource that I look at way too often. My #6 would be Mech Factory and it's associated app. Signing up is free and it's very easy to quickly work out a custom mech or vehicle idea. Also, it has easy access to printable record sheets and a very useful, searchable database for when you need a mech with a certain BV, in a certain era, to fill out a lance.
Another note on the value Alpha Strike players get out of hex maps beyond just playing Classic is that Alpha Strike has rules for play on hex maps and they go pretty smoothly. I play on one of the neoprene battlemats which are the size of 2 mapsheets and double sided. Super fun time.
Thanks Nerdy for publishing this list, everything here I have found useful in my BattleTech Journey from PC to TT. Just finishing up the mini campaign, where my 9 year old twins have driven me back to the last mission , Who would thought a GRF-1N would have headshot my AWS-8Q on turn 3, opening up huge hole in my line 😭 and plans
Short and straight to the points as usual, love it! It's also nice hearing your perspective on how to run campaigns, I strongly hope you'll make more videos about campaigns, it wouldn't sound out of place ;)
Also not free, but often on sale is the battletech computer game. On it's own it's good, but if you add the BTA mod it becomes even better with more mechs, more goodies, and combined arms options.
I recommend for new players or players that are on a budget to cut out paper hexagons that are about an inch wide. These can be used as proxies for miniatures that you don’t have. just write what unit it’s supposed to be on the paper with an arrow facing towards the front. Always remember the most important thing is the record sheet. Miniatures come second.
Sarna and MM/MML should be the top two. Another free resource is Flechs Sheets. It might not be as useful for tabletop play but it can perform certain tasks admirably, such as keeping track of damage.
@@nerdyOveranalyzed Flechs is an immensely powerful tool, as long as you're playing with standard AGoAC rules. Some special equipment rules aren't properly coded and you'll need to keep track of them out of game, but for a standard pickup slugfest, it's really one of the best tools out there.
Very important: Alpha strike players especially, SARNA has cardstock templates for Mechwarrior 3/4 buildings in the Downloads section, so you can print out a lot of free fluffy terrain for your games!
@@nerdyOveranalyzed I’m playing a campaign in the ilClan era. Since I haven’t played all that much and I am playing Pirates, I just wanted to randomize the mechs to represent whatever garbage I was able to steal. I guess I Can just randomize off the MUL.
@@Atlas3060 yeah i was talking to my dad about it. We both want to make our own maps so I'm trying to find a good program to use and print out our own maps. Preferably a free one if possible lol
@@Atlas3060 Yeah I was looking at it. But it seems you need a weird tool. Something called a computer? I just have this fancy small light box thingy lol
@@jameswright2623 Then you and your dad are gonna have an interesting time printing. Unless you use a receipt printer from CVS I reckon, yeah those strips of paper are just long enough to be used as maps if you tape them together lol

thanks! Glad you're enjoying!
MegaMek and MekHQ are great programs.
yep!
The list is technically 6 free resources. Those lore and tactics guides you mentioned at 1:50 are no joke. They're a phenomenal resource.
lol, thanks Ben! Glad you're getting value from them.

I've seen a few people play with no hexes. It seems neat!
You should add Flechs sheets. Fully self contained interactive mech sheets you can use on any tablet. revolutionized how my group plays classic.
I've heard a lot about it! I'll have to try it out sometime.
Do they work on smartphones?
@@TheAchilles26 Yes, but the UI is small and cramped on phone sized screens
I recommend trying it and seeing how you feel

Yeah the RATs table is pure gold honestly.

Love and appreciate these, wanna make a mini campaign for my friend and I
Have funnnnn!
Hey Nerdy! Will you do a Stalker vid someday? Truly a powerful and very misunderstood mech in my game community
Hmm, not sure what mechs I'll cover next. I'll give it a think though!
where you like the fedcom war, would you consider doing a playthrough of mw4 mercs at some point?
Hmm, maybe not sure! Seems logical to do at some point!
I love Battletech lore but when it comes to campaigns I completely make up my own narrative that is completely separate from battletech lore.
The external link on the sarna page you posted for Xotl's RATs is not working. Do you have a direct link that works?
uhhhh, maybe just do the ol' googley googs?
I'll add flechs to this list!
Lots of people are mentioning it. I'll have to try it out!
Are there any IlClan Rats tables out there?
