There's nothing quite like the sound of a Merlin engine. The Spitfire holds a special place in the hearts of British people, a symbol of national pride, it represents the sacrifices made by the fighter pilots and ground crew who fought bravely to defend their homeland. The sight and sound of a Spitfire always evokes a sense of nostalgia for a time when the nation stood united against adversity, and prevailed against overwhelming odds. Same goes for the Hurricanes and Lancasters.
The most iconic flying machine for so many reasons, not least for the young men who flew them in battle, often with little training. We salute you forever.
I live close to Biggin Hill, a former WW2 fighter station. There is a company there which restores/rebuilds vintage planes. They also offer Spitfire flights to the public. I often see a Spitfire flying over my house and it sends shivers down my spine every time. Even if you don’t see it, the sound of those Merlin engines is so distinctive, it couldn’t be anything other than the Battle of Britain hero!
I live in Lincolnshire where the D Day flight of planes are based so quite often you hear the sound of a Spitfire flying overhead, you don't even need to see it as the engine sound gives it away, James May from Top Gear has done some good documentaries including one where he flies to the edge of Space in an American spy plane.
I never get tired of hearing his story about his Merlin taking off across his workshop! I think that's probably the most Fred Dibnah thing he could possibly do lol! I don't know if you've ever covered the story Fred told about the runaway steam engine that took off down a hill and took out a giant stone pillar, but stuff like that makes them like peas in a pod!
I’m a 76 year old British woman. Not interested in bikes, cars or planes, but I would literally watch this man paint a wall. His love of life, his extraordinary charisma. You just smile looking at him. Brings out the kid in all of us.
Yay ! Proper enjoyed this . Guy Martins first name is from one of Britains most well known Bomber Pilots of World War 2 . Guy Penrose Gibson . Of the famous Dam Busters raid . Guy had already flown a 172 operations before he was asked to lead a new Squadron 617 . On May 16 to 17 1943 Guy lead 18 other specialy converted Lancasters each fitted with a Bouncing Bomb to the Ruhr valley . He received the VC for this raid . He did not want to retire !And was Later killed in a Mosquito along with his co pilot over Holland being part of the Pathfinder squadrons who layed sequential colour marker flares to targets for the main Bomber force to aim at . Keep up the great channel Peeps !
For a little more context, this particular clip is Guy (on the sofa) rewatching his series he made on the spitfire. All the talk about "how long ago? 8 years." at the beginning, hopefully makes more sense now. He did this show where he watches back clips from a few of his series.
That V-12 Merlin engine is the sound of freedom. They used the engine (under license) in the P51 Mustang. Absolutely nothing sounds like it, going full chat, overhead. Sends shivers down your spine.
I'd like to see him do some stuff on the Lancaster bomber next. My Dad's uncle was a Lancaster bomber crewman who got shot down in the war and was from nearby Caistor, which I think is close to where Guy's Dad lives.
Great guys, glad you did this, Guy is the man to renew old memories. This Spitfire, a MK1, was one of 19 Marks and 52 sub-variants produced during the Second World War. Mostly delivered by women pilots, to the surprise of many Squadron Commanders. The Merlin engine, itself one of the most famous engines produced during the War. It was used early on in the Boulton Paul Defiant and the Fairey Battle. Becoming one of the most powerful engines used in the Lancaster Bomber, Hurricane, Spitfire, Mosquito and finally in the American Mustang. The Mustangs engines were produced under license at Packard. Many American pilots preferred the Merlin powered Mustang. The Merlin engine once heard, never forgotten and always recognised.
Fantastic to see you guys reacting to Guy Martin. You really must follow up with the Battle of Britain program, going through the same training the pilots went through - where he learned to fly the Tiger Moth, the Harvard and the Hurricane - to take part in his own dogfight with a Messerschmitt 109 and no cgi! Brilliant bloke, an iconic Brit.
I remember watching that Spitfire restoration on the TV - Fabulous! I also felt a special connection as during WWII my Nan worked in a factory that built Spitfires. As part of the war effort (where civilians were mobilised and many women worked in factories and agriculture), she was in the machine shop working 12hr shifts - 12 on, 12 off.
I love the Spitfire, but have a special connection to the Hawker Hurricane, also RR Merlin powered. The Hurricane complemented the Spitfire and the RAF needed them both. My father was a mechanic on Hurricanes in WW2.
The story of what happened with Guy's Merlin engine is, being mounted on a trolley, for safety reasons it's fitted with a speed governor to limit its max RPM. Way below how they would be used on an aircraft... Guy, being the curious type, knew that the Merlin puts out maximum horsepower (just over 1,600 hp) at 3,000 RPM, and wanted to see what that looked like. So he removed the governor, and ran it up to full power. That's when it took off and practically destroyed his workshop.
I did the spitfire passenger flight out of Biggin Hill as a bucket list thing. Most expensive 20 mins of my life but worth every penny. Hopefully Guy didn't have to pay. The man is a legend
I've got no connection to the RAF or the WW2 but for some reason the sound of that engine always leaves me in tears, it's like something is in my memory bank and i can't stop it!
Guy Martin Last Flight of the Vulcan is an amazing program. The Avro Vulcan was the aircraft that twice nuked America! British Aircraft were the envy of the rest of the world!
You gotta do more Guy. Speed with Guy Martin was the next to be released after The Boat That Guy Built and How Britain Worked. Definitely worth watching!
So Close To Home. Thank you, both. Guy is a homie. I live right amongst the major WW2 airfields. The Dambusters...was Guy named after Guy Gibson? My childhood dog was named after Gibson's dog. Word now not PC. Petwood Hotel is just down the road. The Red Arrows were a local free view until they moved from Scampton. And I live in a house where boy grew up waiting for his father - the Padre - to come back from the war. We took Mr Lawrence, his son and grandson around our home and he told us some wonderful stories about lying on the big lawn watching the Spits fly over. You have my heart, Spence and Dan :o)
My Dad was in the RAF during the 60s and for some of his training he was at Scampton, and part of a "initiation" they all went through, was Pissing on "Word now not PC, but the same as H. P. Lovecraft's cat" grave.......I have no idea why but it was something that they did.
@@Tommy-he7dx WOW. Thank you. My son is a huge Lovecraft fan but I did not know the name of his cat. Imagine, today, calling for your dog/cat in public!! Thank you for this. P.S. We so miss the free Red Arrows training flights here. Especially as Scampton is now a UK. Gov. Migrant home land grabble :o(
Don't know what guy Martin's adventures you has seen but I advise you watch all them especially his grate escape adventure. Guys if ever you get the chance to fly in a spitfire hurricane or even a p51 mustang Don't turn it down you will love it.
I live just down the road from Duxford. On a flying day, I get a free show every time I run into the garden when I here Merlin engines or go upstairs to a pee at the right time…usually end up pissing on the floor when that happens of course. But I feel that the resultant wet and pissy socks are worth it.
@@padrat08 Did you ever work on any ‘Funnies’? My step grandfather commanded them on D-day. I say ‘them’ because he and his crew went through a few. They had a tendency to get a bit wrecked for some bafflingly unknown reason…
I love Guy his such a legend and i just can't not watch everything he does, He does such crazy thigs like the motorbike across water and the go kart that he kept going down the hill with and the girls told him to call it a day but typical Guy fashion he added loads more bottles of water and towards the bottom the kart flipped and all he was bothered about was the scratches on his helmet. There's so much he done and i think the reason people love him is because his just a normal guy his not scared of getting shitted up with oil and dirt his a proper grafter.
We owe everything to that Fighter plane and it's incredibly brave pilots. Pure bred dogfighting genius. i dare say the most famous or infamous in the German perspective plane in history
Such an amazing video, you guys are bringing what i believe to be some of the best and heartwarming content on youtube. None of this clout chasing, just sharing of an interest and great moments. ❤❤✌✌☮☮
the 109 has a rolls royce engine in it you can tell this because of were the exhausts are the germans engine was a damiler benz engine witch was an inverted v12 as it was fuel injected so the exhausts would be lower down closer to to leading edge of the wing
Have you both watched the film Memphis Belle? About the USAAF ? It was filmed a few miles from my home at RAF Binbrook - another abandoned, decommissioned RAF site.
love guy martins adventures but have you ever come across James May toy stories ex top gear presenter using toys to create an adventure such has the world largest Airfix model kit a full sized Lego house and others very much worth a watch

_"One of only four two-seater Spitfires left flying in Britain"_ That's three more than I'd expected....
Every series he's done is worth watching.
love Guy Martin, a typical down to earth Englishman
Guy Martin''s Battle of Britain series was great - He learns to fly and dogfight like they did during the war
More Guy please, you should watch Guy racing the bike he built himself up Pikes Peak, awesome, thanks you two

His Lancaster bomber one is great, especially with Masters of the Air being on at the moment might be interesting to see the RAF approach

Whenever a spitfire flies over our houses on it's way to an event, everybody rushes out to see it. The sound is unmistakable. Awesome.

IWM Duxford has to be on of the best aviation museums not just in the UK but the world. Great place for fans of aircraft to visit.
He’s also done another one on the Lancaster being rebuilt to fly
Love all your stuff guys. Another Guy Martin episode you would love is when he attempts to be “The world’s fastest gravity racer.”
Another Guy Martin to react to lads is the story of the Vulcan bomber . 🇬🇧
