I have both the Better Sax Alto and the Better Sax Tenor (just got the Tenor this week). I got these after watching Jay's channel for about 4 years and wondering why I ever let myself quit playing. I bought these horns because 1) I trust Jay. Yes, this is a business and he does and should make some money off of this, but the horns are solid and 2) this is a way I can support Jay to keep producing reviews and content that will hopefully help me get better. I played saxophone in my high school days and I gave it up in the apartment life. Now I have a desire to jump back in, but after 30 years away from it, I didn't want to make a $3,000+ commitment right away. I have been really enjoying playing again. The better sax horns have been great for getting an "entry" level price, but a horn I get to keep no matter what. Plus THIS IS THE BONUS: My 8 year old thinks I am so cool and she wants to learn to play now! I guess I should start saving up for another alto.... 😄 Thank you, Jay for what you do. I've set a goal: when I can play the Jungleland solo on my current gear, I'll treat myself to a high end horn and see what the difference is.
When someone demos a sax, all I really want to hear is how it sounds. The players who choose to show how many notes they can play in 5 seconds aren't demonstrating the sax, they are demonstrating themselves. Thanks, Jay, for playing some long notes there at the end.
To me, that's an understandable point of view that I never considered. I personally have always viewed it as showing off how comfortable they are navigating the sax. I've played saxophones that have very tight springs, too large of travel distance on the keys, or sometimes abnormal key placements that throw me off. Things like this make that flight needlessly challenging. But I do think I'll remember this comment for a long time if I ever am in a position of showing off a saxophone instead of performing.
I've had the Alto for a couple of years and preordered the Tenor late last year. Got it about a month ago and it is fantastic. I hadn't played for about 30 years and started back up playing in church and both of these horns play more consistent and easier than the alto and tenor that I had been using. Thanks for the lessons, the encouragement and the efforts to bring solid playing to the masses Jay!
I have a BetterSax tenor right now and it is genuinely the best tenor I have ever played. I love the underslung octave key. I played it last year during junior high concert season, and I love it. Bravo, Jay. You’ve made a damn good saxophone
Congrats! The horn sounds really great! One can recognize the quality of the mechanical setup via how it subtones and how clean the double time passages sound. Can't wait for the day BetterSax releases a Bari!
Congrats Jay! Some of the best inventions in any industry have come about by people who started as technicians, fixed and played thousands of instruments , became masterful professionals and went on to create their own products with that vast priceless knowledge. You are such a classic example, sir ! So happy for you !
Jay - You bring quality education, excellent interviews of many of the greats, take us on your excursions, and continue to bring us high quality workmanship and manufacturing of mouthpieces and saxophones that don’t cut corners, except for perhaps your own profit margin - and do it all with a smile. Thank you for showing us that good ole’ American Exceptionalism. You walk the talk. Thank you Jay!
I got mine on the first order, too. I love it! The ergonomics feel every bit like a professional horn. Getting around the spatula keys, C#, B, Bb, its like it was made for my hand! No hangups like my other horns. I was playing on a borrowed Yamaha 62 and there really is no comparison between the two. When I first played Jays sax, I couldn’t believe how low Bb, and B exploded out the horn! I can go on but left my detailed thoughts on the Sweetwater web site. For anyone looking for a pro-like horn for an entry level price you won’t go wrong with the Better Sax. Glad I made this purchase as well as the Burnin mouthpiece. Thanks, Jay! I really can’t see why I would need to buy another tenor in the future.

Looks amazing and sounds so dark and free paired with the Better Sax Mouthpiece . Love the consistant clarity of it's tone and eveness of it's intonation throughout the horn's scalular limits! You have really made an amazing insturment that is readily affordable to beginners, intermediates and pros alike! Well done, Sir!
I bought this Tenor after becoming frustrated with the crappy sax I got from my university. Been playing on it for a couple months now. The number 1 improvement I felt was how easy it is to play. It takes wayyyyyy less effort to get good sounding notes out of this instrument compared to the instrument I was using before.
I Received my Better Sax tenor yesterday from Sweetwater. Well packaged. It was clearly checked over before shipping because the shipping corks were removed but included in the case. Plays very well. I used my RPC mp which I like and was very pleased. (normal sax for me is either KING super 20 Silversonic or Yamaha 82z depending on situation). Action was smooth and precise, no leaks, no binding, easy key action, precise "pop" to the pads...all what you would expect from a well constructed and set up sax. Included a checklist from Sweetwater noting what was checked, including play testing!!!! Case was great, includes strap etc. (No gloves LOL!!!) Would love to order that case for my other saxes!! My experience is that you can't go wrong with this Tenor. Just to benchmark that, I usually carry a sax and a spare to my gigs. (things happen!!!) Last nite, after playing the Better Sax, I put it in my car as my spare!! Well done. Excellent value for the price. Thank you.
Along with the great quality components, I find it awesome you could squeeze some engraving in to the horn with the entry level price. Obviously it doesn’t add to performance but it does set the horn apart from other entry level horns. I look forward to picking one up! Somewhat of a non sequitur, but related to saxophones: My personal experience with my instruments, all professional level and bought new, is having them regulated (pad height, spring pressure, key height) to one’s own specifications can make them even BETTER than new. I’m lucky enough to have a repairman from the actual factory in Japan available (Yanagisawa), but good repairman are out there to bring even a new instrument above already high expectations. Just a thought.
Welp…found my first sax with this, gonna save up and grab me one, love the tenor sound and the looks are amazing…will knock my socks off in person though.
Thanks for the video. Looks like a good instrument at a good price. Unfortunately, it wasn't available last fall when I got a gig playing tenor. So I took your advice from another of your videos and bought Yany. 😁 Can't go wrong with Jay's advice.
We tried the BetterSax Tenor demo model at Sweetwater today and had trouble with it going an octave higher, like the octave key was leaking. We fiddled with it for a few minutes but couldn't correct it. This purchase is to be for my son, who has been playing my old horn, which has lots of the usual leaking issues even though it was recently professionally refurbished. He has put up with it, though, and we told him we would get him something that works better if he was still interested in playing in high school. The BetterSax Tenor sounds so nice in this video! I fully suspect something could just have been wrong with the BetterSax demo model. We had success with a couple Yamahas and a Jupiter, but they were double the price. Any thoughts or suggestions?
That sounds like the octave key could have been out of adjustment. Did you tell the staff at the store? They would have had it fixed in the repair shop that is in the back of the store. When you order one of these you have a 3 year guarantee and if there are any issues at all Sweetwater will take care of them right away. They do a fantastic job setting up the horns so that things go smoothly for customers from the beginning. I’ll follow up with the shop about the demo model.
@bettersax Oh I'm so excited. I'm looking to get a bari sax to play professionally in a couple years when I leave high-school, because currently I'm just borrowing one from the school. Your bari might be the perfect fit because of price and quality.
Absolutely love the alto, got it on sale from sweetwater and the value is crazy good! I already have too many tenors, but I'll be first in line for the bari if you make one! Your reeds are really great too!
I bought mine but what a wild ride getting it. I go to the States once a year to see Mom. This year I ordered the Tenor from Sweetwater a couple of weeks before I traveled. I had also bought other Sax stuff from other companies. I called Mom twice to ask about boxes arriving and she said YES, boxes had arrived. Then I called again and asked what she did with the big box, and she asked what big box? The tracking information said the horn had been delivered, but Mom was saying she never saw it. The day after I arrive in US I call the police and they come over right away and take all the information. The officer says you should get your report in a couple of weeks. That would not work for me as I was only in the States for 12 days. I make a few calls and in a week I got the report. I send it to Sweetwater and the salesguy says Pete, this is a Police Incident report, I need a Police Report. WTF? I call the Police and the officer says It's the same thing, have the sales guy call me!! I call Sweetwater again and explain. He finally says OK, I will send out a new horn tomorrow. I got it on a Friday and flew out the next day......whew. BTW, I love the horn, and for a first time tenor player I am finding it easy to play and it sounds really nice. Good job BetterSax Team!
Man thanks sucks that porch pirates got your first one. Sweetwater is amazing though and I’m glad they got you another one. Great to hear you love the horn. Please leave a review when you can it would mean a lot to me.

That's a real BOSS sound. I'm hooked. I'm in Japan and am looking for a beginner to intermediate tenor sax that's sounds great at an affordable price. Just one question. Can I use that mouthpiece with other tenor saxes and still get the same sound? Is there a noticable sound difference between an under slung and an over slung neck?
Hey question, I’m in High School and plan on playing throughout college and even after. In all honesty do you think this tenor is good for that or is it more to be played by more beginner and kids in school?
I know you call the current model bettersax classic. Will there be other models in the future like bettersax vintage, bettersax jazz, or bettersax modern?
Great job Jay! I play a fancy 1959 Mark VI and have been thinking of getting a second for back up but it’s way to pricey. So my question is how do you think it compares to a MVI and i’m thinking of the ergonomics primary. Here in Sweden it sells for a long way under what a 5 digit MarkVI, maybe like a fifth of the price so it would certainly be a good deal if it works out for me.
@@bettersax you should make a comparison between the beginner Jean Paul and the beginner bettersax. I bet both are good options but I agree the bettersax appeals to my eye’s alot more.

Hi. Jay Love the channel, so much great information. are you going to design a soprano Sax next. my favorite soprano Sax player. is Kenny G. my all time favorites are Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt. Thanks Ray
Hello jay! I want to order this tenor sax! On the link you posted, says It's not available until 6 to 8 weeks. Is it the only place we can get the tenor? I'm from the Philippines.
Hey! I'm very interested in starting the Saxaphone. You say it comes with the mouthpiece, but the website under the description says "Mouthpiece - No" and offers free shipping with purchase of the BetterSax mouthpiece. So does it come with a mouthpiece or not?
@@bettersax Great! Thanks for the reply. I love your vids and you're the one who inspired me, at 34, to finally dig in and learn what I've always wanted to do.
Yes, soprano and baritone versions are in development. We have to get all the details right and that takes time. Soprano will be a one piece no high G.
The next video I would like to see if him talking about how he got that he wanted to make his own kind of saxophones and what goes into him making his own kinds of saxophones
Hm.. I'm a beginner level wielding a Yamaha YTS 280. I'm wondering how this compares. If I could trade up for a similar or even better price then what I paid for my 280, it would be amazing! Has anyone here tried to compare this Tenor to the 280?
Congrats, looks beautiful!! Was super impressed with the alto; can only imagine how the tenor is!

Love the channel, so much great information. are you going to design a soprano Sax next. my favorite soprano Sax player. is Kenny G. my all time favorites are Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt. Thanks Ray
Soprano is being developped and could be available later this year.
sounds good.... I NEED A BARI
This is really good news and work from you guys, weldone, please what's the cost and how do I get it to Nigeria
Hey this is Orman D. from Cancún. I was waiting for this ! Can i get a link to buy? ❤
Link is In the description
Would love to get one but our currency exchange in Malaysia is so low. 😢
Earlier you advized a ligature with 1 screw is best. This one has 2. Why?
Yes it does. You are looking at the Thomann site. At the top right of that page it says it comes with the BetterSax Classic mouthpiece.
@@bettersax Great! Thanks for the reply. I love your vids and you're the one who inspired me, at 34, to finally dig in and learn what I've always wanted to do.
would i be able to use a lyre on this sax for marching band?
Yes!
Soprano next please 😊
ok
Any plans to build a Soprano? Or a Bari? Will the Soprano have the High G Key and 2-neck option if there are plans to build it?
Yes, soprano and baritone versions are in development. We have to get all the details right and that takes time. Soprano will be a one piece no high G.
I’m really interested on this Tenor but can’t access to the link in the video or the website. Not shipping to Mexico yet? :(
Bari?
Are you ever going to make #4.5's for your reeds or is it just going to go up to #4.0?
I have a better sax alto and i'm very happy of it. The question is... when come the soprano version ? :) Nice work Mr M.
So glad to hear it. Soprano may be ready later this year.
@@bettersax Amazing!!!

I NEED A TENOR FREE BLOWING, DARK...WOULD THE BETTER SAX FIT THE BILL?
Yes!
Any Bari Sax from Better Sax?
Hm.. I'm a beginner level wielding a Yamaha YTS 280. I'm wondering how this compares. If I could trade up for a similar or even better price then what I paid for my 280, it would be amazing! Has anyone here tried to compare this Tenor to the 280?
When is the bettersax soprano coming out?
Working on it.
