      Well just a little fun fact, it was a standard procedure for allied forces to shoot at pilots in chutes german pilots would have faced serious consequences if they had done so.
      Code of ethics and rules of war were more important to the “bad” germans than to the “freeing” forces.
      Germany is occupied until today and not sovereign. We are still controlled by US interests.

    Shrenk was fluent in German when captured...this helped him survive a harrowing captivity....his full length interview is amazing

    This is so beautiful. Proof that men can be respectful, even in war. My grandfather was a P-51 mustang pilot who flew 49 missions over Europe. Before he passed away in 2015 at the age of 94 he told me so many stories of being in dog fights with the German pilots. He said some of those pilots were SO good and he's lucky he survived. I wish he was still here so I could show him this. 😊

      Really brings a new meaning to that scene in All Quiet on the Western front, when the kid stabs the Frenchman, I believe, in the crater. He can't bring himself to finish the soldier, and instead he talks to him (fun fact, in the original movie, the soldier couldn't talk back because the actor was mute. Made a lot of silent movies, but AQOTWF was his last movie, I believe, since silent films were going out of style), and says something along the lines of "maybe we could've been friends in another life"

      True. I don't recall the movie where a B17 crew was shot down and put into a regular POW camp. One day a high ranking German Luftwaffe officer came to the camp. The bomber Capt. recognized his insignia and went over and saluted the German officer. He explained how they were B17 pilots and crew. The German officer had them moved to a different pow camp with better conditions.( Based on a true account)

      They weren’t enemy’s to each other as individuals, they were only enemy’s because of them wanting to/being a part of defending their country in a time of war.
      The sentence “I knew you were already out of the war so what difference would it make to shoot you” is a great reason and should honestly be considered more often.
      Being out of the war means that the tactical advantage has already been achieved and there is no need to take the others life.
      Its beautiful honestly

      Because that's actually human. The greatest crime of war is lying, which makes people believe that they are enemies. It is actually the interest of a few greedy and evil people, who, when they talk about "giving our blood for our country", never mean their own blood, but yours.

      @@ShadowHunter31eh, this can’t be argued for pilots, though. Pilots are officers who undergo extensive training and need to be extremely qualified. They can’t just be conscripted and sent into the meat grinder like boots in the infantry. They were all motivated volunteers. Many didn’t know about the death camps until the end of the war, though.

    I recently found out my uncle was a paratrooper WWII, shot & killed as he jumped from the plane. Bless this man for being spared and the soldier who spared him.

      Paratrooper is a different thing. You are getting dropped in a group as a ground infantry which is 100% a threat. A fighter jet pilot for instance is a sole person un-armed once out of the plane. Why would you shoot him I wouldn't I don't think anyone would unless there trigger happy american.

      @@kovacevdI was going to say this exact same thing. Theres a big difference between shooting a man whos ejected from a plane thats been hit versus shooting at paratroopers who are trying to land so they can group up and reinforce an attack. One is fair game and the other isnt.

Though, there have been rare instances of Luftwaffe pilots shooting down someone who is parachuting. At least that's what I recall. Feel free to correct me.

      Yes, I have read so many stories, about war crimes that were committed against women and children by soldiers. Oh man, it's soul crushing to know what so many people were forced to endure during WW2. Not to mention the fact that millions of Jewish folks were murdered/tortured during this time.

      This wasn't a pointless proxy war. Germany had taken over almost all of Europe. Apart from the UK and Russia, the only nations that stood strong. This wasn't a futile proxy. Albeit the German pilot probably had no idea of the horrors of their machine, since he would've been engulfed by propaganda

      @@DeliMeatTree- Myea, the ones at the top drive the dirty machinations of evil, while the puppets are out there fighting in the literal dirt for them. - That difference in perspective makes people different.
      It’s roughly the same between the internet and in person. When there’s a disconnect, people can be evil, but in person a lot of the time people tend to have empathy and they can talk and have a drink or whatever.

    I'm 57. Just saw Valkyrie for the 1st time last week. Have a new perspective about Germany since then. There were soooo many Germans that were not OK with what Hitler was doing. God bless these two men.

      When you have that, they will do anything, and then some others will see that and wish to be elite... Like the SS, who would do anything for him...
      The standard army would always be under watch, ensure no plotting or scheming to be had, and then the aspiring ones in that standard army also would be doing the same, hoping to bite a turncoat and get a bump up
      The civilian population would be most likely to be against him, seeing that it would end up being very iffy on if he was actually doing good or not as a government, which once again, you can't voice opinion... To many protecting his law to say a thing without death, which only would cause more distaste...
      So much grey in every government, but when the government won't even allow you to speak on problems, it becomes that much more foggy

    Love the moments between old combatants… they shared an intense life altering moment and it stuck with them. It’s great to see them embrace like brothers. Plot twist they were cousins he had German ancestry and the germs pilot was his neighbour 16th century

      Sadly I have to disagree with the American pilot on every German shooting down their enemies whilst on a parachute
      It is just not true
      Why would they shoot at men they will capture anyway ?
      When a plane goes down the local police and military forces are already standing in the field where the pilot will land his parashute usually
      Most Americans were shot down over German territory
      The German airforce saw itself as the last knights of Germany
      They acted very chivalrous toward their enemy pilots
      They had the luck that their war was more of a game of skill than a war of hate and destruction
      Shooting a man on a parachute could get you killed in some airforce squadrons as it invedibly would mean that they would also be shot at when they were shot down
      And every pilot gets shot down eventually
      Some Germans lost 3 planes a day

    The shooting of pilots in parachutes I don’t believe was a widespread phenomenon in the European Theater but it did happen I know that much. An entire group was forbidden from shooting parachuting enemies and was the one Franz Stigler hailed from.

      It wasn't widespread in the early days, but as the war kept on it became more common that pilots and crew who bailed where shot at by enemy aircraft or ground troops.
      This is the case for both sides.
