I think gratitude plays a huge part in avoiding discontentment. So when you come back and you see where you are, you also look back and see how far you’ve come and consciously choose to be grateful. Key word is consciously. Cos there might be a mind battle to not want to regard where you’ve come from and where you are because of the gap compared to where you want to be.

Discontentment is really a thing, what has helped me most of the time is counting my blessings and being more grateful, look back at where I used to be and where I am now and still aspiring. Journaling those achievements/aspirations and steps I'm taking to get there and celebrating the process.... Generally gratitude does the magic as you keep your hopes alive. ✨

I think the discontentment thing also due to the fact that so much of our lives in recorded and documented that, with every new year , you can see exactly where you were the year before and if your situation has improved but not changed in a transformative way, it can feel like nothing , thus adding to the feelings of discontentment
