  • AUTOBIOGRAPHY:
2LT. Manuel S Prado Jr. (Ret.)
I am Manuel S. Prado Jr., born on 12th of February 1972 in Rizal, Magsikap, San Jose, Occidental. Mindoro, Philippines.
At the age of 5, I learned Kali Filipino Martial Art from my father and grandfather, who were known guerrilla warriors during the Japanese Occupation in 1940-1944. I learned together with my older brother Samuel. My father was an expert in "Espada Y Daga," "Dumog," and "Judo, huwis de kotselyo, He trained us in the techniques he used as a guerrilla warrior when fighting the Japanese colonizers. The training continued until I reached high school. The Kali Methodology applied by my father was then known as " Doce Dos Metodos Contradas." My brother and myself grew up with martial arts as a daily play-and-games routine.
Way back in 1989-1990, at a tender age of 18 and into my Second Year taking up Bachelor of Science in Criminology at the Philippine College of Criminology, I decided to join the Philippine Marine Corps. I underwent and passed the 12-month Boot Camp Training of the Philippine Marine Corps. I then pursued further training and became a candidate soldier of the Force Recon Marines, the Elite Force of the Philippine Navy.
I am a true warrior and master of Kali (Filipino Martial Arts), retired with a rank of 2nd Lieutenant after dedicating over 28 years of my life in active military service with the Philippine Force Recon Marines. I have used my military and Kali skills set and training in active war zones in Southern Philippines particularly in the provinces of Basilan, Jolo, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Cotabato, Lanao, Marawi, Davao, and Zamboanga in the island of Mindanao. I will be officially retiring as the Chief Master Instructor of the Philippine Marine Martial Arts Program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Philippine National Police. I have humbly shared my vast knowledge in Kali FMA with the United States Marine Corps when they were stationed in the Philippines as they seek out elite closed-quarter blade combat skills.
I am a Master Blade Forger. I have used the same blade crafting techniques handed down to me by my father and his father and forebears before him. My beautifully handcrafted blades are the same standard fighting bolos and combat knives of the Philippine Marine Corp - blades that are designed and tested for action in real combat.
After my retirement from the Force Recon Marine Corps, I have envisioned myself as a leader in the propagation of FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS - KALI SYSTEM in the Philippines and, if given the opportunity, across the free world. I will continue to hand-forge the best Filipino Fighting Blades there are which are which are currently being distributed worldwide under the brand name Top Prado Blades.
The weapons-based art of KALI, a term used to describe the Filipino Martial Art (FMA), has gained worldwide acceptance among martial artists, security professionals, civilians, and even fight choreographers. For many in the Marine Corps, their very survival depends on how well they know this indigenous fighting art.
As a devoted practitioner of FMA since early childhood, I have followed my veteran father’s footsteps and entered the Corps as a teen. The have found my FMA skills very useful in the field as a soldier and in the military barracks as an instructor. I also gained a reputation in the martial arts community as a master blacksmith of the Ginunting blade, the standard issue sword of the Force Reco Marines. In an interview with FIGHT Times, I was able to discuss the role of FMA in the military and how I passed on this knowledge to future generations of soldiers and civilians.
