- I first heard this message preached at the Wrath and Grace Conference in 2017. Pastor Voddie had based it on a book he'd recently written, I think. I was thrilled when a Texas church had uploaded a video of the message he'd given for them in 2022, so I made sure to save the audio. Now I'm happy to be able to re-release it for others, after the original video disappeared to my surprise after getting about a million views.

I love hearing things like this from the Bible. For 37 years, I've heard this story. But this points to the main character found in all scripture, the Christ.

I went to church with in the morning went to watch super bowl at my sisters and ended up watching a Bible movie called Joseph !!! It was so good my sister and I talked about the movie I didn’t understand the part when Judah slept with that girl and he gave her his staff and bead thing ?? Woke up at 2 am that morning and saw this video of voddie wow!!! Amazing !! now I know . Thank god for preachers like voddie they are true blessing voddie really broke it all down and found the true meaning that I would have never really known 🙏🏼❤️
Tamar was legally owed an heir which would provide her “social security” in old age. The way this was accomplished if the husband died when she had no son was that the husband’s brother would marry her and provide her an heir. Judahs son Onan wanted the enjoyment of sex with Tamar without the financial loss of her wealth going to her offspring rather than his by his first wife, so he slept with her but tried to avoid conception. This exploitation angered God so he struck him dead. Judah didn’t want to lose any more sons so he didn’t give anyone to her as a husband. But he was obligated to before God. So when Tamar tricks him into giving her an heir by dressing up as a prostitute, it puts him to shame and he confesses that he’d acted unrighteously. The staff was proof that the father was Judah

The true story of Joseph is that Joseph NEVER did nothing to accomplish the purpose that God showed him through dreams.
In fact, Joseph did not know what was the purpose and where, how and when was going to be accomplished.
God ordained the circumstances of Joseph’s life and they took him to the place he had to be in the appointed time to accomplish what God wanted him to do.
Don’t try to help God. Abraham did it and the world is still living the consequences of that.

This sermon brings so many questions to mind. Is it ok to teach kids a surface lesson that is “false” - trust God and he will protect you wherever he sends you….because that’s the lesson I learned! I was never taught, trust God and he will give you a pagan spouse, riches and status. You could try to teach 5-year-olds about seed, covenant, and land, but you’re gonna lose them! Are they teaching 5 yr olds about seed/covenant/land in Sunday School at Voddie’s church? Look, I am an English major. I enjoy looking at stories ALL KINDS OF WAYS, but when I hear a preacher essentially say, “everybody gets this wrong. Lemme tell you what the Holy Spirit meant.” I get nervous. There is one and only one meaning that was not known until Voddie preached it? That troubles my Spirit. I went to a false church that said THEY were the only way to Heaven. I recognized the false teaching and left. The Holy Spirit was making me uneasy about it. That same sensation is coming to me now. Same feeling Voddie’s sermon about the Prodigal Son. “Everybody misunderstands the point of this story…” THE point? The one and only correct point? I’m going to have to think about this carefully. Voddie isn’t the only pastor I listen to who does the, “everybody is misinterpreting this. Let me tell you the one correct reading”. If I was kidnapped tonight and found myself in a Hamas camp, I would not be doing everything I could to bless the Hamas people. Gospel…yes. Mating with a Hamas spouse assigned to me? Not voluntarily! I respect Joseph’s decision to give his sons Hebrew names, and maybe God told Joseph, in a dream, that he should go ahead and marry a Pagan Priest’s daughter…but the Bible doesn’t say that. Question things. Always. Charisma is not truth. Truth is truth. Adding long conversations, like the ad lib conversation about Joseph’s son’s names, when it is not WRITTEN, should be a concern. Long-winded inferences, in support of a pastor’s interpretation, are suspect, no matter how entertaining the delivery. Careful, Saints. We can “like” someone so much, that we mistake their voice for that of another Shepherd…The Good Shepherd. Discern. Test the Spirits. Not saying I’m right either. I’m saying, “careful”! Scripture provides all we need. Adding to it is not only unnecessary, it is forbidden. I think our Biblical heroes can and do falter. I read the Psalms and scratch my head when I hear David wax poetic about his blameless life. Huh?! Pray ceaselessly for discernment, especially before you sit “under” the sound of a man’s preaching (voice). One pastor used to enjoy, was so delighted about his musings about trans weddings that he gave HORRIBLE advice to a grandmother about the same. Damage was done. Divisions in my own church. Careful.
One thing I realized while listening to this, for the second time, that has blown my mind is that Judah was willing to sacrifice himself for his brother whom his father loved. When Voddie references David who was willing to sacrifice himself for the people of Israel I remembered the Saul, the king who should be fighting for Israel, was from the tribe of Benjamin so again we see Judah sacrificing themselves for Benjamin.
Thank you for this explanation of the Holy Scriptures and thank you for the Ministry of The word of God which you bring to us.
This is why I don't look at Hollywood movies on biblical scripture. They make movies based on their interpretation and not on God's revelation

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
That was an amazing sermon. The end made me cry. God is so beautiful, and His plans are so intricate, and He did all that for us. Joseph had to have the hard life he had to save the seed. He was not the star of the show. The seed always had to remain hidden. The seed wasn’t even from the favored wife. Amazing!
I had often identified most with the characters of Elihu (in Job), Jethro, and John the Baptist, because they weren’t main characters but they came along to help the main character and except for John got to live mostly normal lives. Now I realize that even Joseph is a side character; the heavy focus on him in the narrative kept me from seeing it. Voddie’s exegesis was wonderful. The main character of the Bible is God. We are the support cast. Even those of us who are larger than life by ordinary standards. And a big part of Christian maturity is being content with an inferior role.

The whole point of Joseph was to save the children of Israel/Jacob. We should look at it as everything work together for the good for those who love God and called according to His purpose. That’s what I get out of it. Period. Joseph loved God and he was called according to God’s purpose.

Joseph is a type of Jesus. I think the irony is that you have a gentile, making Joseph a ruler when his own people (AKA Israel) rejected him and killed him. Sounds a whole lot like Jesus.

Sometimes I wonder if you allows this to expose certain bloodlines to see who is worthy of the kingdom and who isn't. To see who belongs where to see what everyone is capable of to see who needs to be removed and who stays and where they stay. These gods and kings forget about our True God playing these silly war games deciding for everyone else or is God deciding for them? Are they choosing for someone else or is God choosing for them? If someone is so willing to do such horrible things how do they know the ones using God's actual chosen aren't being played for playing the game? Humbling and keeps you on the narrow path when karma and judgment comes into play literally everything these powerful gods (little g)and kings created and accumulated can be removed in the blink of an eye for their previous actions knowing when they walk up to the gate God says NO I don't know you no entry into the promised land you chose to lie cheat steal kill sacrifice for your neon gods rather than your Father. Being God's Oracle what others say and do compared to what Father God says is quite different. God allows it. God sees the infinite we see the finite. Being God's Oracle if you only knew what some of them are capable of you'd understand why Sodom and Gomorrah happens. No fallen or pagan decide the outcome only our True Prime Creator God that created the gods and kings decides. The most important mission there ever was to finally redeem themselves from the fall with the lake of fire factored in, is it worth it? An eternity is a very long time to fall.
