What have Americans got against organizing and STRIKING? If working conditions are truly so oppressive & unsafe (and they clearly are), you'd think you would choose to go on strike & demand better rather than just giving up your career. That only hurts you and the patients by permanently removing another nurse from the medical field. This is why nothing ever changes for workers in this country.

Ok sure. If you quit because of this then it’s no loss. If we as nurses want respect then we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Slippery slope- no. The nurse convicted basically gave the officials the nails to hang her to the cross. She denied being over worked, she denied fatigue, she felt supported by Vandy, she requested to be a preceptor to that nurse in orientation. She wouldn’t stop talking with NO lawyer present. She gave up her Miranda Rights. I’ve looked at several lawyers commenting who said the case never would have gone to trial if she had kept quiet and had a lawyer with her

My thought and prayers goes out to all the nurses. Everyone is saying that’s what the label is for. If you haven’t worked an 12-16 hour shift, tired ,caring for multiple patients and, dealing with some doctors who can be rude not all ,and dealing with the patients family members. I am not a nurse but I was a cna going to become a nurse but once the pandemic hit I choose to stay at home with my family and I found a job that is way less stressful. What? Why is that even being brought up we are trained for these situations 💩 to answer her question per her own training as a nurse - if the patient is competent and decides to ignore the orders and falls anyway - that is the fault of the patient - never the nurses.

If nurses want to leave the profession, that is THEIR CHOICE & we respect their choice but the people have spoken & NOBODY (not even healthcare workers), are above the law. If one makes egregious errors that cost another human being their life, you will have to face the consequences.
I know you people are overworked, understaffed, & tired. Problem is the healthcare system in this country has had things their way for so long that they don't like outside interference even when the outside information could help.
You want things to get better for both you & your patients, start by getting rid of the pencil pushing MBA in the executive suite & replace them with a DOCTOR.
Hospitals should be run by a doctor NOT an accountant.

This case is NO DIFFERENT than the Kim Potter case in Minnesota. Kim is the former Minnesota police officer who mistakenly drew her handgun instead of her taser during a traffic stop in which resulted in the death of Daunte Wright.
In the heat of the moment, she made an HONEST MISTAKE that cost another human being their life, just like RaDonda Vaught.
She was found guilty of manslaughter & will serve her sentence.
They don't give drunk drivers a free pass either when they go out & accidentally kill an innocent bystander.
Just because you're a healthcare worker doesn't mean you get a free pass when you make a critical error.
This case was NOT about a simple mistake, but this was about eighteen instances of gross neglect.
Whenever a medical error is made that in the end costs another human being their life, the individual responsible for the error should always be held legally accountable.
In RaDonda's case a jury of her peers found her guilty. She should accept the verdict, serve her sentence, and get on with her life.
Likewise, the medical community should move on by learning from this experience by making appropriate changes to the system to see that it doesn't happen to anyone else.
In today's society, EVERYONE is being held accountable for their actions. NOBODY, gets a free pass anymore.

Ok so over 250k people die every year from medical error. Traditionally medical malpractice cases are tried as civil cases not criminal as these are Errors and not with intent. She made a mistake that cost a patient their life which happens to over 250,000 people a year. Medical professionals should not be criminally charged but rather a civil matter when mistakes occur that’s how it has been in the past. Why change now? Why for this one case out of 250k cases a year? Imagine sending 250k medical professionals to jail every year! Instead of blaming the individual how about fixing system errors that cause the deaths in the first place. Why was she even able to access a paralytic in the Pyxis? Why wasn’t it in a separate area in an RSI box? These are things other hospitals do to ensure this doesn’t occur. She already lost her job and license and cannot practice anymore. The family was paid off by the hospital and wasn’t looking to charge her. You have no idea how many times everyday nurses save patients from doctors errors. Many doctors have killed patients and are still practicing. As long as we keep blaming individuals and not looking to change system causes this will just continue.

The facts of this case were not reported by the News, and Vanderbilt was at fault with their medication system. Nashville’s DA does not convict criminals and releases them them back on the streets daily to continue to commit crimes. And Nashville’s DA implemented a Social Justice System in Metro Courts. Nashville DA should have spent his time convicting criminals in Nashville, instead of charging this Nurse with murder.

Nursing is getting too hard to work in the profession. One mistake and people are guilty. Anyone can have an adverse event. It’s short staffed all of the time. Once I found that I was having problems with serious emotional issues, I realized I could easily do something wrong. I wouldn’t get my meds in jail. So, I’m putting my license on retired. I cannot work anymore and am just going to cut my losses. I stopped being able to handle any stress at all. So, now I can’t do anything.
I feel for that nurse. Her institution is more culpable than she is. I don’t see any of the higher ups going to jail. They have to find a scapegoat. If this doesn’t stop, you won’t even be able to get the least educated nurses to do bedside nursing. There will also be a severe shortage and more of this will happen. An able nurse has to rot in jail. There’s scammers out there. Why don’t they look for them and arrest them. Let this woman go home to her family.

The issue is that many of the healthcare systems do not provide optimal working conditions that would allow you to be the best. There's extremely high standards placed on nurses. Imagine going into work and your workload doubled and there's no assistant or help and if you made a mistake someone could die or become handicapped for life. I've never worked a job that only required that I be a nurse. We are responsible for our roles as well as making sure everyone else does their role too and if they don't, we (nurses) have to do their role as well. We are humans and humans make mistakes. I believe it's not an argument of not wanting to be held accountable but an argument of recognizing intent. Don't call into question my character and my nursing skills, if the corporations are not putting their practices under scrutiny as well. Staffing issues, lack of support, supplies, resources, etc. Nurses can't be everywhere and be everybody and do everything perfectly.

    • @brt5273

I have a doctor, two nurses and a nurse's aid in my family so I'm not completely ignorant of the profession. There is never an excuse for negligence. If the particular institution you are working for is is forcing you to work under conditions that are putting people's lives at risk you have the option and responsibility to stop working there and report what is happening, find more ethical employment, or go into a different field. Continuing to work there under those conditions is active participation in the situation. So if your negligence kills someone while you're choosing to work under those circumstances, then you are certainly responsible. That would be the case in any other job situation whose practices were putting people's lives at risk. The fact that this news piece is based on a case where the nurse made MULTIPLE negligent choices, and people in the profession would rather she get away with that than have to deal with any personal implications is outrageous to me. It takes a certain type of individual with extraordinary acuity to work in this profession successfully, and those who are able to have my respect, but it isn't for everyone. People who can't do it without harming or killing their patients should be doing something different, both for the sake of patients and for their own well being.

@@brt5273 you can have a doctor, 2 nurses and a nurses aide in your family and guess what? you can even add having a wife that's a RN and a mistress that just happens to be a clinical hospital pharmacist that you spend a lot of time with...it's irrelevant. Your statement, "If the particular institution you are working for is is forcing you to work under conditions that are putting people's lives at risk you have the option and responsibility to stop working there and report what is happening, find more ethical employment, or go into a different field." is ignorant and is exemplary of the thought processes of so many. I'm a rare breed. I've worked at a lot of facilities. I've bet I've worked at more places than that doctor, 2 nurses and nurses aide have worked combined. I've reported and I've stopped working at places that have proven to be very unsafe; however, it's a NATION WIDE SYSTEMIC ISSUE in the healthcare setting. You couldn't even fathom the amount of responsibility and weight that's placed on your shoulders based off of your response. 99% is an A. That 1% chance can cause fatality. If everyone got out of the field or stepped out into another area who felt the same way I did, who would take care of you or your loved ones should they all of a sudden require acute care? I bet that aforementioned statement would be redacted so fast. Multiple negligent choices were made on both ends; however, the nurse is the one who is being used as a scapegoat. The hospital is culpable as well. Would you rather just that sole nurse be punished and branded as a criminal? or Do you want the facility to own up to its intentional shortcomings and improve so that others don't do what she did as well? My argument is not that she shouldn't take responsibility. Both should.
