- We’re revealing our latest project: Fleet -- the next-generation IDE from JetBrains.
Fleet is an IDE and a lightweight editor. It's flexible, smart, and polyglot with support for collaboration and remote workflows. Fleet is built from scratch but uses the IntelliJ code-processing in the background for its smart code-editing features, such as code completion, navigation to definitions and usages, refactorings, on-the-fly code quality checks, and quick-fixes.
Fleet is in active development and we need feedback to make it perfect for you.

Android Dev here, Having a cloud based IDE that can supercharge my gradle builds is a dream come true, i hope we get android studio with this
That is not that great, cause you can't boil water with your pc then.
@@mohitagrawal6179 it's winter, imagine the cold!
this comment looks sponsored lol
Finally a new GUI editor that is not just an overblown web browser. I really hope that speed is a priority with Fleet. If so, JetBrains can finally take Sublime's crown on my setups.
@@dmitryovsyannikov4874 Hmm.. Let's hope it's not or if it is that it's a worthwhile issue to work on.
isn't it literally a web browser? I mean the cloud version
@@daddy9004 No. As far as I understood their comments in their blog post, it always runs locally as a Kotlin/Skia app and an IDE is consulted like a beefed up language server pretty much.
Anyhow, what I meant was that it's finally a modern editor not based on Electron which uses chromium in the background.
ah yes. Trade in your overblown web browser for your bloated java runtime. Loading a project up in fleet: 1.3gb memory usage and spikes my cpu quite a bit.
@@sharonfox Ok, keep using VSCode then. Fleet looks much cleaner and is probably much more responsive.
Very interesting! The basic-full IDE switch is neat. Very clean UI. I love the existing IDEs but look forward to switching to Fleet when its capabilities match WebStorm, for example.
Thanks for the feedback and please do try out our beta program and let us know about the things you think are missing or are important for you!
@@pavankjadda I'm still waiting too
@@marcobehler1395 how to try beta program
This really really needs a thorough comparison to VSCode, because that's the first thing everyone will compare it to.
The second one is the usual IntelliJ IDE of course.
And Eclipse Che, though I personally haven't seen anyone really use it out there in the wild...
Please consider a community version at least.
There's a lot of potential for competing against vscode
Most likely this is will be free, only the backend (IntelliJ) will be paid as it is now.
@@Haryyyy so not fully intellisense in the free version?
@@aislanarislou I think what he means to say is that the cloud backend is for commercial use only, but if you want to run the headless IDEA in your own PC that is available.
@@VivekYadav-ds8oz so is my code get compiled/interpreted in their cloud ??
@@ko-Daegu if you're willing to pay for it. i guess.
looks promising, hopefully the plugin support is good
Yeah if its not fleet will never compete with vscode
hello lerrific
Yeah pluggins will make or break this.
There will be plugin support and we'll keep you posted once it arrives.
These remote features are already available for free on Vscode.
I love JetBrains' IDEs. They make the best developer tools.
I'm definitely signing up for the beta testing
signed up quite long time ago not yet into beta tho :(
It will be amazing if I can use fleet for all my swift, go, rust and typescript in a single IDE with all existing plugins including remote debugging; if this happens then that’s it. This will be the only IDE I need. If they can bring this to the iPad as well then I shall cry in joy!
How do you program on an iPad? Or perhaps why... I mean sure: one could hook up a keyboard and either work on that tiny screen or perhaps attach a bigger one? But then you could just use a MacBook or Laptop (or PC) with whatever OS you want.
Just curious, not meaning to sound rude.
@@igordasunddas3377 I guess it’s lighter and cheaper
@@igordasunddas3377 Thats a great question. When Im on the train (or traveling) I find the iPad much more convenient to carry around. The iPad with M processor is a very capable device.
Yeah iPad/ even smartphone was my first idea too!!! How often have u been on the road and some solution pops up in ur head that u want to quickly try out? Even typing it out on my phone and quickly testing it there I would LOVE
Switching to JetBrains IDEs is one of the best decisions I’ve made as a hobbyist developer. I’m looking forward to what Fleet has to offer!
It better run everywhere and be easily extendable, otherwise it stands no chance to compete with VS Code.
Will Fleet be open-source/have an open-source community edition?
Unfortunately 😔
no way its gonna be open source
@@_tsu_ dang, I got interested but I guess have to stay clear of this
We are considering all the options as well as open-sourcing parts of the product or technology behind it. Stay tuned for details in the coming months.
@@marcobehler1395 Open sourcing the editor but keepind the ide backend proprietary is good enough for me.
You guys keep working on this and you'll eventually start giving Microsoft a run for their money. I've always loved Jetbrains IDEs but they're not very friendly for the ram or low spec systems. The future of smart text editors is looking bright.
They definitely are a bit resource heavy for low-RAM machines (coming from someone who use JetBrains as their main choice for larger projects). But I feel Fleet might actually solve that problem to a degree? I’m looking forward to trying it and will be reporting back when I get access.
Woo-hoo, even more subscriptions! What a time to be a live!
Will fleet have a community edition or will it be closed source?
We do not have a specific answer yet, we are still working on the licensing and pricing for Fleet. We plan to have a fair pricing that will be in line with our other products and our approach that the price should reflect the value.
We are considering all the options as well as open-sourcing parts of the product or technology behind it. Stay tuned for details in the coming months.
It's been a pleasure vscode, see you again
CANT WAIT TO USE IT!!!
You've given us a guitar without strings until the vim key-mapping is sorted. 270+ thumbs up for Vim key-mapping support on the issues board.
I just hope there will be an Open Source version of Fleet.
We are considering all the options as well as open-sourcing parts of the product or technology behind it. Stay tuned for details in the coming months.
Will there come a flutter support like in vs code?
it even has neat little UI animations... I'm sold
Just wanna say! I'm a big fan of your IDEs
Can't wait for this to finally come out so the whole programming world can take it for a spin.
I think this is gonna be epic, especially since there's going to be a Community Edition!
In the current state, it looks kind of boring. It's fleet compatible with VScode development container and can your share your docker work environment with your team. So that it does not matter, if you use vscode or fleet? That would be awesome, to go for an Open Standard 🤩
I always welcome competition however VScode is somehow open-sourced what about fleet ?
I do not get it. I am interested in it, but I am not sure what is the use case for this. If I turn the IDE switch on, the resource usage will probably jump drastically so I am not sure what do I get? Why not use the appropriate IDE itselft (Idea, PhpStorm etc)?
The distinguishing factors are a different UI/UX approach, IDE+editor concept and support for all technologies in one IDE instead of several.
Will Git features be enabled all the time, or only in Smart Mode? On one hand, you don't want it to slow things down when all you want is quick, basic text editing. On the other hand, if the Git features are robust, people may want to use it as their default difftool/mergetool, in which case you'd essentially want basic mode + git.
Maybe it should be disabled by default *except* when launched by git in diff/merge mode?
Git features are enabled all the time, so they're also available in plain text editor mode.
@@marcobehler1395 Gotcha. If you guys can pull off a snappy startup into git features, that’ll be a one-up on VS Code. My git is configured to launch VS Code when I do an interactive rebase, and while their rebase GUI is excellent, having to wait 10+ seconds for it to become… well… *interactive*… isn’t optimal.
So.. if I want to use the remote IDE server while keeping using git outside of IDE, am I out of luck?
This can be a solid competition to VSC, haven't used any jetbrains product in last 2-3 years (used to love intellij when I did java) but I'm excited to dive back in
This looks great! Please consider adding F# support :D
vsc with ionide is good, I'm concerned about them not mentioning plugins
@@alphaprimal1669 VS Code + Ionide is pretty good, but I prefer using Rider atm. A more lightweight version consisting in Fleet + F# support would be perfect for me.
Waiting to get early access.
So this is basically an IDE as a service
"it downloads the dependencies" thats it I'm sold
If I am not wrong, it means we are just one click away from getting all the supports for a language. We don't have to install and manage all that extensions.
Cant wait to test it out already…
Love the smart mode indexing feature. 👌🏻
Jetbrains IDEs take alot of time to run on my machine. Still i stick to them coz of my interests. Now fleet seems like overcoming that thing too... Very excited for it..
Wow.............. very interesting. Just wait for it.
Hope it's free like vscode
i really apreciate your help with dowloanding this software
Will vim mode be supported by default, and if not are there any plans later? This looks like a great alternative to VSCode.
Constructive criticism for the content at 0:46: I'd love this feature if I didn't have to click on that "Smart Mode" icon. Also, why does it have to show its progress in such an obstructing way? When I open a project, I don't want to see multiple popups stacking upon each other to show what's the IDE is doing on the project. I'd just want to focus on my coding. It'd be better if it was shown somewhere at the bottom -- out of my sight -- but still available whenever I do want to know what's happening. Once again, I hope to see Fleet starting up like VSCode. For example, when I open a Rust project in VSCode, code completion, dependency installation, and compilation are all done automatically as soon as I open it. I'd love to have such convenience when using Fleet. Sorry I know that Fleet is a brand new project. I just thought to comment about this.
It looks great. If it runs faster than vscode for a large Typescript project, I'll much likely use it
Switch to Linux or Mac, much faster than on Windows
@@TheDoppelganger29 I'm using a 2019 Macbook Pro
@@TheDoppelganger29 I plan on switching to Linux by the end of the year. I look forward to speeds and improvements from what I’m being told by fellow developers.
This is exactly what I need. I used to use Notepad++ a lot on my Windows machine, before I had to switch to mac, because it was just so light and fast.
I hope it will have VIM support. I would like to try to change my Neovim IDE for this
I use IdeaVim for jetbrain IDEs. I guess we are able to install it on Fleet too 👌🏻
Is Vim keymap supported?
@chuankang sun How to enable it?
Is the IDEA instance running in the background using the same code as the actual IDEA? If yes then there is no actual speed up 🤷♂ It just opens up faster.
will it be faster than vscode?
So I still don’t know what Fleet is. Is it a cloud-enhanced IDE? Is it an IDE friendly on system resources until you need extra features, then you use more local resources for normal features?
It's both! You can use it locally or from the cloud. The collaboration features still work even if you use the IDE locally.
We have vscode bro, why do you think we will use this?
So basically vscode without the capability to run in a browser?
So why would anyone get that over Intellij? This question was not answered in the video in my opinion.
Should Fleet become a lightweight IDE like VSCode? Or will it replace IntelliJ at some point?
I think both will exist, like how visual Studio and VSCode both are
First - Fleet is both an IDE and a lightweight code editor. With a single click it can transform from one to another. If you need an editor for a small task Fleet will start in a second and ready to work. For more advanced features, the “smart mode” with IntelliJ code-processing activated is one click away.
Fleet is still in its early stage and it's hard to provide a detailed comparison with other tools. However, the distinguishing factors are a different UI/UX approach, IDE+editor concept and support for all technologies in one IDE instead of several.
So this is very similar to vscode then? One thing i love that was shown here is pair programming just like replit except in the IDE. vscode has Live Share but it's kind of a hacky extension and never worked that well for me, but having it built into Fleet seems great! Genuinely, that might be the one feature that pushes me to actually switch, once it can fully support all the languages i use through extensions or whatnot. I've heard of JetBrains customers being very happy with their IDEs, and having a free alternative to vscode by JetBrains with functionality that i think is definitely lacking from my current dev experience would be pretty awesome. Fleet is going to be free, right?
I like that it's similar to vscode since that creates competition which only benefits us users
I don't know if Fleet will be free, but the "smart mode" probably won't be, or at least not for all languages. JetBrains Rider, the C# IDE, for example, isn't.
Re: it being free, I doubt it. At least it won't be as free as VS Code is. I suppose there will be a community edition with the "killer features" coming at a cost. My first thought even before seeing the video was that this was a VS Code competitor, but I don't think IntelliJ can quite go toe to toe with MS by offering a completely free editor-IDE of their own.
looks like vscode competitor, if it has useful vscode features and the better ones, I would definitely use it.
nope, they said fleet will probably not be free, which is absolutely hilarious considering vscode is already practically an industry-standard and it's completely free.
Can this connect to AWS SageMaker for developing ML models in Python?
If it isn't based on Electron, I'll buy it
It is not :)
I am blown away!
Please tell me this is not electron based. We might finally have a good IDE/Text Editor that can compete with VSCode and is not Electron based? This is a dream come true... I really hope this will be open source or will have an open source community edition.
agreed
@Inco Gnito Awesome! lets hope they make it open source or an open source community version
I hope that fleet can re-stabilize the code editor market a little again, with vscode being so insanely dominant these days. It's actually kinda scary if you think about it, that so many of us rely on Microsoft making the right decisions.
Congrats on the idea to develop such a tool, don’t rush it, you need quality to win against vscode. Cheers
Interesting !! Moreover, I liked the honesty "... lot of things is not working, but whatever is working is pretty darn exciting ..." !! Being Upfront
Good one. But TBH I didn't see any features that VS Code couldn't provide
I'll take a vscode substitute anyday. I'm very tired of chromium based applications taking eating ram like no tomorrow. If this editor can fix that issue along with provide great plugin support, then this will be my main editor instantly.
Just signed up for beta. Can't wait to try.
Sorry to say, but this looks extremely Electron to me.
@@didiercatz if this ships electron it will be pretty much useless and dead on arrival
@@diomerda111 yeah sure because VS Code is dead
@@didiercatz Luckily not, on the Fleet Twitter account they said it doesn't use Electron and is written mostly in Kotlin
@@didiercatz How do you know that?
Love the humor! This is awesome and I can't wait for the v1 release!
so it's basically closed source vscode right?
Is vscode really open source tho?
@@bergglobus2428 whats the difference between vscode and vscode built from the git repo apart from the api keys
We are considering all the options as well as open-sourcing parts of the product or technology behind it. Stay tuned for details in the coming months.
I love your java and c ide, I will definitely use your text editor, the colours and themes and fonts look so pleasing and relaxing on the eye, It's not just a plain text editor, its like visual studio code but to me it can be way better. Really great to see that visual studio code has competition from now on, it can only get better for devs
Is it available on rpi 4?
Will immedietly switch to Fleet after the Copilot plugin gets available.
I really hope the exentsibilty of the gui is good.
I like the path jetbrains is taking with this.
Instead of a bulky IDE that specializes on a single language it could be a lightweight IDE powered by plugins and the cloud to let you code in any language.
You've just described emacs lol
@@alessandro_yt Don't even start
If this new development environment is lighter than its counterparts, it will be a development breakthrough! It is very similar to VS Code in some places.
Will it support flexible tool window docking and multi monitor setup or you'll continue the tradition of ignoring user requests with almost 400 upvotes running for more than 11 years?
The collaboration stuff looks amazing (in spite being in Alpha), I just hope they add extension support, and the only thing holding it back would be it being a close source software (as far as i am aware)
We are considering all the options as well as open-sourcing parts of the product or technology behind it. Stay tuned for details in the coming months.
@@JetBrainsTV looking forwards to it
@@JetBrainsTV I don’t think any of us are expecting full open source right away, but I think a lot of us will definitely see it as a step in the right direction even if it’s just partial.
Full ide in the cloud can be a game changer. So many people know how to code but getting an IDE set up is beyond a lot of people or restricted by their employer
Hopefully it has dark mode.
Thanks for the video. Nice.
Does Fleet is based on Electron just like VSCode?
It's our own UI. Fleet is not using Electron 👍
@@MaartenBalliauw does it mean that it won't be possible to run Fleet in the browser?
@@MaartenBalliauw ohhh, awesome!
@@sealoftime it's a native app and we have no immediate plans to make it browser-based
@@MaartenBalliauw thanks for your response! Would like to see if you'll decide to work on a web version in the future for more efficient coding in online education platforms and the power of using Jetbrains' IDEs on things as weak as ChromeOS devices :)
Thanks for the overview, exciting! With all the secrecy surrounding many companies planned products it feels like a breeze of fresh air that you're actually responding to questions in the comments :)
2 questions:
How many terabytes of ram it use if it runs backend idea service?
Does it support third party addons/language support?
why is the IDE back-end running on your servers, instead of locally?
Got couple words for you: Price? Availability?
I hope for a community edition! Hope that includes some basic support for locally hosted pair programming. It is always a hassle as a hobby or student programmer when you want to ask a friend for help on your programming problem and have to send code back and forth by some chat software.
visual studio code has this collaboration feature for free, try it
Does Fleet also support Wayland on Linux?
how often you open project without knowing what ide you will need for editing code?
this sounds like solving a problem that doesn't exist.
Still in Closed Preview, how can we join the Preview Program?
It looks fascinating text editor, when will you release the Fleet ? Hope to see it earlier in 2022. Congratulations the team JetBrain !
Love to see how the speed fairs up with running the backend from the cloud based server
Acts a bit like vscode with ssh. And it might be a bit faster.
Is it possible to use our own server or just a workstation with a fleet server running?
Jetbrains keeps exceeding my expectations. I thought Kotlin would be the pinnacle. Turns out they're just getting started. Remoting the IDE on aws ec2 (or anywhere, including spaces) over the IDE instead of sharing graphics via RDP or Xwindows is another game changer: easier to setup, no need for a window client, no need to open others ports
Sorry for being the party breaker but why Yet Another IDE? Just a few years ago we got Rider, was that such a quick project with a bad design that you already starting all over again?
Looks great. The IDEA ides need this modern look (lots of white space and big buttons) and front end/back end split (for Docker integration that doesn’t make you pull your hair out).
Very excited for this, smart features like these are what I like about JetBrains' products!
I am very excited to work on JETBRAINS FLEET....
😁
Great, i hope it will have a lisp interpreter like emacs some day.
This looks interesting but I cannot see anything can you please create a dark mode bases video? :PP
What about C# support, Will it allow me to work on a dotnet kind of project?
Finally no more merge conflicts if we working on one feature at a time :)
This looks amazing
Very nice demo. One question tho, is the client-server communication done through LSP?
I would get Fleet if it was available :D
Look neat, I like the space that it gives - so I have more space for my text code.
Does this support double monitors? (The demo doesnt show it).
What language does it written in? Your IDEs works fantastic, but java is eating a lots of memory, especially for huge projects like unreal. Vscode has the same issue when a lot of plugins are enabled!
Support for flutter? Ios? Is it arm based platform? Tnx
I like this, how does things like libraries etc work when you use this? same as before? im kinda new-ish.
This looks AMAZING, and I can't WAIT to get my hands on it. Mainly so I no longer have to even install VSC for the small stuff! 😁
