    Incredibly well detailed, in depth video. Great Job! I learned more than I ever knew about my Garand's rear sight. Including the helpful little trick to pull the elevation out a little to avoid excessive wear on the selector needle. I was able to clean and reassemble my sight and now my windage knob works!

    Thanks from "M1Thumb" in NJ! I got a mail order H&R M1 from CMP. Rear sight was frozen. I disaasembled it with your video, liberally rinsed all pieces with WD40. A lot of gunk! I relubed with Ballistol, reassembled per your YT. Now windage and elevation controls work well. Thanks!

    Thanks for the informative video. I was able to accomplish my goal of installing a new National Match aperture on the rear sight assembly with it's help. Of note is the peen in the elevation track. I am thinking of doing a video on this install and the fitting necessary to accommodate that peening and decision of whether to flatten it before fitting to get more accurate aperture to aperture sight track. Thanks again!

When I watched the vid to see how you took the sight apart I realized that my detent (the circle with the flat side) is too far up and is preventing me from unscrewing the sight. • @norwich93CMP
      @norwich93CMP  Рік тому

      Wow! First is the aperature should not have come out. For some shooters, or National Match, aperatures are ground down at the front bottom which will let you remove it form the base. I assume you have tightened the screw each time. It does sound like you only need a new rear pinion. If you prefer you can get an aperature too. Should be more than about $50 at a G.S.

    I still couldn’t get mine on, it’s a late war with that flat knob at the end, I was trying to see how it adjusted and the whole thing fell apart on me, and so far the video isn’t that helpful for me in my instance, maybe I’m just doing it wrong, but I’m hoping I didn’t drop a piece on the way to moving it to a table with better lighting 😂

      It needs to be unscrewed in both locations, the small pinion nut and the knob form the base.

      Try holding the knob and tightening at the same time to prevent the pinion turning causing the rear sight to move upward.

I can't unscrew it because it's 1) too stuck and 2) there is no screw hole to use, there are 2 tiny slots on the sides. I'd appreciate any help or tips. Thanks!

      Sounds like you have a flush nut type which was the earliest version. You need a special tool to loosen it. Usually it is found on one end of the early or late cleaning tools.

    Do you have the tools and could you do a video on disassembly/assembly of the rear elevation pinion/drum?

    • @norwich93CMP
      @norwich93CMP  4 роки тому

      The rear elevation drum was not designed to be taken apart. The screw was designed to be loosened to adjust the increments properly to the range but not to be removed.

    • @jason60chev
      @jason60chev 4 роки тому

      @@norwich93CMP Yes, I know about the adjustments. But the only way to determine if MY pinion has the Breda BMR mark is to remove the drum. There is a set of tool to do that and springs and retainers are available. It may not have been "designed" or contemplated to disassemble it, but it CAN be done. I have read a tutorial on it but would be nice to see it done in video , before I attempt it.......www.m1garandforum.com/forum/steel-warriors/general-garand-diss/15315-rear-sight-elevation-pinion-assembly

    If I am simply changing out my rear sight aperture do I need to take the whole assembly apart and off the gun or do I just need to unscrew my windage and elevation knobs

    • @norwich93CMP
      @norwich93CMP  4 роки тому

      The pinion on the elevation side needs to come out, nothing else. After loosening the elevation nut off the elevation pinion on the right side the pinion should pullout from the left side. The the aperture can be removed and replaced. Reverse the process after you install the new one.

    Great video. Any grease or oil on the site before re-assembling?

    • @norwich93CMP
      @norwich93CMP  9 років тому

      You can. Just remember oil/grease attracts dirt/dust/grim. After you zero I would only put CLP on the elevation knob and windage knob that come in contact with the ears on the receiver. Also your not going to check underneath the cover much, if at all, or a long period time. If your shoot different kinds of ammo with different bullet weights a lot it would be necessary to zero often, then it would benefit to grease/oil. I only recommend CLP. It doesn't dry up causing glaze over with that plastic-like film, causing seizing up.
