I applaud you for your honesty and soul-searching despite the terrible accident. Many riders would rant: you raise the bar to reflection. As a cyclist, it can be tough to admit we’re vulnerable in the grand hierarchy of road users. Diligence is one of hardest goals to maintain in life, but I agree it’s a worthy one (as critical as training). Hope you make a 200% recovery and I have no doubt you’ll use the break from pedalling to dig deeper into great content...
I was hit by a car over 10 years ago and was is surgery 11 times to fix my ankle/shin/talus. It will never be like before, but I am still a weight weenie and recently built up a "heavy" 8.5 kg gravel bike from old and new stuff. Getting beyond our injures is the best, in whatever form that is possible! All the best to you, love your content and one day wish to ride in Japan too...
Glad you're out of the hospital but I'm sorry you're out of commission for so long. Definitely would love to see the teardown / forensics / rebuild planning video if you're up for it. Wishing you a fast recovery!
Pawel Szymczykowski cheers mate! I will try and do something like that for the tear down... it’s a bit difficult to move around when you can’t bend your leg though haha 😅
Slowly going through your videos. You’ve become one of my favourite YTers. Funny and informative. But I’m writing because I didn’t know about your accident before now and want to add my belated heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery. That must have been a horrific experience. So glad you’re doing better. I once was distracted with my Strava and drove into a parked truck at a much slower speed around my neighbourhood. Not fun. Survived with a few scratches and bruises. It could have been worse. I feel for you. Keep up the excellent work.
You’re lucky that you can still use your extremities my friend had a really silly accident and broke a vertebra he cannot use his arms or legs. You have a guardian angel riding with you get well bro
Good to see you again. There are two kinds of people, one type blaming external, everyone and everything else is to blame. Two, others look internally and see what they did and what to do next time. I like how you thoughtfully reviewed your accident and how you could have stopped this from happening. Would like to see a bike disassemble video.
I didn`t know you had that mishap. Of course I too wish you all the best and a quick recovery, (just had a little one myself last Saturday, if that can bring any solace...) and I can relate to your intention to commit to a grater focus on your rides as I always had crashes because of lack of attention and out of complacency
Dude! I was cringing in pain just listening to you describe your injuries. I really hope you heal 100%. I’ve broken three helmets in crashes and on one of those occasions it definitely saved my life, and maybe yours did too. I always wear one and have for the last several decades! A bike dismantle video would be great to see what hidden problems may come to light.
Sorry to hear about your crash but glad you are on the mend and still have the appetite to make the entertaining and informative videos we have grown to love
Darn!! So sorry to hear this bad news RoJ. But, so funny to hear your comment ''from the bottom of my bottom bracket...'' You are one tough, funny guy!!
@@ridesofjapan Yup ... but I just ''discovered'' you ;-) Hope you recovered well. I'm doing some RoJ binge-watching ... great videos Dude!! PS: Japan is on my bike bucket list - looks totally Dope those small, winding, quiet roads.
Paul Drouin cheers mate! Can strongly recommend the riding here, although currently after the typhoon we had a few weeks ago pretty much all small mountain roads are closed
Get well soon! I’ve been in crashes like that before, it can be frustrating not being sure how to place the blame. The “this shouldn’t have even happened” thought can be pretty depressing, in my experience. Stay positive and power through, we all adore your videos and can’t wait to see what you put out next!
Adrian Hansen cheers mate! I’m a pretty positive guy in general and with all the kind comments I keep getting it’s hard being anything but positive hehe I’m mostly grateful that it wasn’t worse than this... it could have ended much much worse. In terms of blame, I’m not too bothered by that part. Life’s too short 😁 Ride on!
It's great to see you so positive and not all negative about the whole cast issue. The best thing about the crash is you walked, no pun intended away from it. Great advice and stay strong.👍👊✌
Glad to see you are back home ok. The worse is over! You'll be back in the saddle in no time! Looking forward to that disassemble and component health check video!
Hope you have a speedy recovery. I'm sure the pain of not riding is worse than the pain of the injuries. Would love to see the bike tear down, for educational value. Thanks for all the great vids..
Glad you're doing well. I've been riding 35+ years, had a concussion and an ACL tear, but after months of rehab, I'm back on my bike, riding 100km+ rides on weekends. Yes, would like to see a rebuild video. Thx
Thanks for the update and sharing your reflections, Tobias. Glad to see you are healing and looking ahead. I look forward to the next video - amazing content! Deej
Wow. You are SO much more upbeat than I would be! Still on meds or can nothing dent a cheerful soul like you? :) get better soon, good luck with the recovery
Charlie Moores cheers mate! In general I’m a pretty positive person and mostly I’m thankful that it wasn’t worse :) All the well wishes I’ve received on these videos has totally blown my hair off. Can’t stay depressed with that much support ☺️
I am wishing you the best for the healing process and the insurance hassle. I'm glad living in Germany with a 100% health insurance. In case of a crash, the costs of medical coverage is the least thing one wants to worry about. If there is a problem with covering any costs in your case, I'm sure your community would be happy to help you out!
I know this happened a while back but it is a good reminder to me about safety as I ride on the Chicago area roads. Good health is easily taken for granted.
Sorry to hear about the accident! Bloody frightening things and I know exactly what you mean about that 'moment' you know it is unavoidable. Get well soon but don't rush yourself! Heal fully before starting rehabilitation. Look forward to seeing you on the road again.
Man, that’s a seriously great reflection! It takes some sense to not just blame the other guy for the end of the story. Framewise - Look at the bright side: An even better bike built is upcoming 😍
Not sure how it works in Japan, but I would not want to have video evidence claiming any amount of responsibility until insurance was all worked out. Both insurance companies would use that against him in the US.
Oh nooo! Good and quick recovery!!! I got myself an open u.p.p.e.r. about 3 weeks ago, manly also because of this channel... So I think they should def. be very generous about this cracked frame. The channel does a very good service to them. And keep up the good work... best wishes from CH
So sad. :( It seems this was a while back, so you obviously got better already. Here is to hoping that nothing similar ever happens again. Your videos are awesome. Keep up the good work!!
Good to see you are up and moving...and as usual concerned about the bike. I had a recent accident where I was doored and went flying over the door landing on my back. I was able to walk away with minor injuries....the bike was a BMC road machine alloy and it survived. Front wheels were replaced. While I inspected it carefully, I did get a second review from a bike shop. All the best in your recovery

Glad you're reasonably ok, I hope you are able to get back to riding and a new bike soon :) I just crashed two days ago and messed up my front carbon wheel, that was the same day that I greased my thru axles after watching your video on bottom bracket creaks, as I had the same creak-when-standing. It worked perfectly and I was just thinking about sending you a big thank you comment for saving my bottom bracket (and sanity) when BOOM and I was down. Rewatching some of your videos including this one after having been involved in a car-bike accident now almost a month ago. I was going about 56kph on a straight main road with slight descend and tailwind when an old lady pulled away from a stop sign to cross the intersection just seconds ahead of me. Riding there on a rim brake bike I couldn't do anything to avoid accident, but I don't think disc brakes would help me much either. I crashed into the front right door of the car at about 48kph according to GPS data, flew onto the windscreen, roof and then the tarmac. My bike was totalled (completely broken fork, frame cracked in four spots, bent front wheel and scratches eberywhere), just as was the car. No bones were broken, but the meniscus in my left knee was somewhat strangley misplaced and the posterior cruciate ligament was torn off. I have already undergone one surgery, but still have to lay in bed most of the time. Can't wait to get back on my bike.
Hey dude.....welcome back! Really really really glad to see you are on track to recovery. Lucky that left shift lever and steerer tube was not your knee.
The same thing happened to me a month ago on a local descent. A car overtook me, 100m later he decided to slam the brake in the middle of the descent to say hi to a friend who was walking by. Obviously, I couldn't stop as quickly as him and smashed into his rear left wing. He said he never saw me. Police report: I'm responsible for the crash since I'm the one who rear-ended him. I had to pay for his car damage and my bike repairs. TLDR: I feel your pain 100% (minus the injuries!) You're taking it way better than I was, even if you are badly hurt. Thanks for sharing!!
Alex Godbout-Simard damn! Sorry to here you had a similar experience. I’m pretty sure the responsibility will end up in my shoulder for the exact same reason you said. But that’s life. Cheers mate!
Happy you are doing well. I have a kinship with you in that it has been almost a month from my crash. Broken left shoulder blade in 2 places. Lucky did hit my head. Been in an immobilizer since the beginning. My TCR is scratched up, Torch 3.0 shoes took some damage but everything is cosmetic. I have the same thoughts that I am not as focused in my riding brain. Took a drink at 20 mph and hit a rock with one hand on the bars. Down in milliseconds. Get well and keep riding.
Michael Schenck ouch!! Healing vibes to you as well mate! Reading that made me flashback to when I broke my femur (one-handed pot hole) At least we learned something from it :) Positive thinking!
I also passed a overtaking and then stopping car at 40mph hair thin. Like 10cm. I really asked myself a long time what is wrong with me not anticipating that. You have to be super alert especially riding fast. If anything unusual happens slow down immediately.
I think it's very challenging to stay focused all the time and it's quite easy to crash in just a blink of an eye. From my perspective although one can have a belief that he has everything under the control, he's not. At the end if you crash is often only a matter of luck or bad luck (I mean if you make everything right and you don't ride like a mad man). Especially if your speed is significant and you don't have much time and space to react. Nevertheless I'm glad that you well and your recovery was successful (as I saw in the latest videos ;)).
Just checking back after a month or so Wow. Assume driver stopped. Best wishes for the recovery !!!!!! Buckwheat pillows always, always great for support Onward with perceptive-
Speedy recovery and keep thinking about your next ride as this will encourage you once the plaster is off. You could do a "cut up carbon bike video" like the aussie repairman if your frame is beyond fixing.
It must have been a real shock, when you found out that, despite initial observation, the bike was NOT ok :-/ we always seem to worry more about the bike (the cost involved in getting it back to riding condition, anyway :-P ) and less about us... Keep the moral up, as usually, and keep posting the very useful videos you've gotten us used to ;)
All the best for you. I hope your leg gets fine sooner than “in a couple of months”. Your remarks on the road awareness are very valuable. Thank you for that. This sort of answered my doubt I had regarding my future ride. A proper road or “do it all” gravel. I’ll go with gravel. More opportunities to just enjoy cycling and views. Especially where I live and cycle. As for the autopsy video, it would be nice to see it. Do you happen to have access to a more advanced damage assessment tools? I would like the rear of your bike scanned to see what such a scratch means for the internal structure of CF. Get well soon! Recover and choose your future bike!
Hope you get we'll quickly and back riding. Love watching your vids. It will be interesting to see what you salvage from the bike. Shame about that beautiful blue frame!
City driving where people try to kill you in their cars every time you ride and you quickly learn to use flat pedals so you can bail from the bike in an emergency. I've stepped onto someone's trunk once and onto someone's hood another time. Teaches them to pay attention to the road and not their phone. Teaches me to always be aware.
I applaud you for your honesty and soul-searching despite the terrible accident. Many riders would rant: you raise the bar to reflection. It must have been a real shock, when you found out that, despite initial observation, the bike was NOT ok :-/ we always seem to worry more about the bike (the cost involved in getting it back to riding condition, anyway :-P ) and less about us... Keep the moral up, as usually, and keep posting the very useful videos you've gotten us used to ;)
Glad you are doing well and finally you lucky, get well
Get well soon!!
Get well soon, love all your video that is both funny, informative and useful!! 👍
Get well soon
Would really like a crash analysis of the bike. Especially interested in the rear end of the frame. Let somebody have a look at that
All the best for you.
Cheers mate!
Don’t have access to those kind of tools unfortunately.
Good Video as always and I am pretty sad to see you in this situation. All the best that you can fully recover and ride your new bike soon.
Hope you get we'll quickly and back riding. Love watching your vids.
It will be interesting to see what you salvage from the bike. Shame about that beautiful blue frame!
Have another get well my friend!!
Mate, wish you all the best to recover soon. Keep it up my friend 🤙🏻
get well soon and wish you fast recovery!
Get well soon and this is an opportunity to see you more in mechanical projects, until you are full recovered!!. Cheers
