I haven't watched many content creators who visualize battles by putting up models, dressing up as a medieval bowman and tell historic accounts with such a passion like you, Kevin. One of my favorite history channels on UA-cam.
Wow, that's really kind of you, thanks so much 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquadhonest appreciation of great content. Thanks for your educational and entertaining content.
@@thehistorysquad: NOW I understand the reference in #HenryV, to "that in the seventh year of the last king's reign was like to have passed against us..."
It must be referring to something similar in the reign of #HenryIV...?
Kevin is brilliant, going to say one of the very best historian creator out there.
@@thehistorysquadrotate the H so not looking like the corp media crap History Channel 😢
It really is eye opening that the more you learn of history, the more you realize we’ve been through all this before
The only difference is that most of the peasants of today are too weak and comfortable to fight back against the nobles.
What's worse is when you think about it, if we've done it all before and we know how it ended, what will happen this time round?
Fun to learn history though and this channel is definitely one of the best for it
That’s why us historians plead with people to learn their history, but apparently the Kardashians are more entertaining.
History may not often repeat, but it often rhymes.
Seems like we are going through it now, and eventually we will rise up, just like the peasants.
After all was said and done, the peasants got a lot of what they wanted, because no state can resist a truly popular uprising.
"Milord, the peasants are revolting!"
"Come now, I know that they reek but they're clearly not that bad, are they."
"Finally, something we can both agree on" 😅
I saw a movie a long time ago and and the messenger says the peasants are up in arms.
"Are they revolting?"
"They've always been revolting--they're rebelling!"
Peasant revolts are an underrated and fascinating phenomenon that doesn’t get nearly enough attention
Cause then we would learn and revolt ourselves
We need to revolt now in the UK . It's disgusting .
It’s time to revolt against the liberal elite folks, they are treating us like cattle at this point
I agree.
I imagine it would be an event of a lifetime. Tales to be told in families for generations
I mean the French Revolution gets talked about quite a bit.
As a father to a daughter, I would've been filled with so much shame if I let some wanker check her out for tax purposes. Revolting against your king/government is no small feat not too mention that these blokes pulled it off is amazing. The fact we're still talking about it over 600 years later is a testament to these peoples' anger and taking a stand. Thank you History Squad.
Absolutely 👍🏻
A lot harder when you’ve given up your means to do so in the modern age. I truly feel sorry for the people the UK who understand this and are surrounded by morons/cowards. Especially these days where multiculturalism has failed with the cohesion of common national values being called racist. The government now knows many of their citizens will comply with insanely tyrannical orders, lock yourself inside, stay away from each other hell you better not even seeing a dying loved one in the last breathe. And people overwhelmingly complied like actual cowards. Was this also your? How were people not ashamed of their cowardice? It’s a scary time for freedom of thought especially in the UK. It’s been very hard to watch.
And let’s be real. I doubt the perv was doing it for that reason.
Yep, and sadly happening around the world to this day... in various ways and even here in Canada
In this day and age lifting up skirts might come with a surprise or two...
If we're not careful history has a tendency to repeat itself
As Maggie Thatcher found out.
@@rtk3543 I liked Maggie Thatcher gave the armed services a 27% pay rise in 1979
Especially as the British public are having more and more unnecessary regulations from all quarters foisted upon them these days .
Also how long will it be before the likes of UA-cam give your details to to the “ secret service “ for making rebellious statements ? .

Never take those that aren't as well off as you for granted. If they join forces, it can end badly for you.
an odd takeaway but sure lol
A lesson that is forgotten over and over and over.
An organised minority dominates a disorganised mass.
@@robcanisto8635
It's a lesson that has been learned and lost innumerable times. As another UA-camr is fond of saying, "You have more in common with the person down the street than you do with the CEO and politician."
I guess that's why the exploiters of the present day work so hard to keep the masses divided
A beautiful Friday to sit down with Kevin Hicks
😜 cheers John
@@thehistorysquad Great storyteller as you listen to his descriptions you can actually visualise the scenes as the stories unfold Nice one Copper ha,ha.
One of the best storytellers on youtube. Great video.
Thanks 😃
Agreed 👍😁👌xXx
That was the best story of the Revolt I've ever heard. Thanks Kevin
Goodness, thank you.
Brilliant. In order for the Revolt to be properly understood, it could be useful to look at what happened with the Jacquerie in France, only a few decades earlier. The French and English peasants were clearly not willing to accept any more arbitrary demands from the nobility.
Yes, absolutely 👍
Kevin is the history teacher we all needed growing up. Thank goodness it’s not too late for us to learn from one of the greats! Thanks Kevin!
What a story! You make the old times come alive. Thank you!
You bet! 👍
Firstly nice to see you wearing Richard’s Boar 👍
And as a man of Kent (born south of the river Medway) I’m proud that this great county had a hand in this great part of history.
Take it that’s on his coat of arms?
I think he means the white embroidery on his burgundy cape/hood
The game Knights and Merchants had an expansion called The Peasant Rebellion and I believe it was based on this part of history
Sudbury's rugby team should rename themselves the "Sudbury-Drag-Outsiders-And -Club-Scoudrels"AC. Their mascot would be a bishop with a cannonball head. Good vid!
Absolutely love the way you tell history Kevin. So glad I found your channel.
Me too😃 thanks for watching 👍
Wow just put it together when you said 1 of 18 heads that will roll that night. That’s must be where our modern saying “heads will roll” is from! Very cool thanks for all the videos Kevin
Absolutely 👍🏻
Hands down my favourite account of the peasants revolt. Thank you. Please, drop by next week. You're welcome anytime.
Deal 👍🏻
Reminds me of a movie quote from the 1996 film Dragon heart.
"The peasants are revolting!"
"They've always been revolting, now they're rebellin'."
35:04 Seems as though the 14 year old king had a lot to teach his older self.
He might not have died so pitifully in 1399 had he remembered what happened during the revolt.
Indeed 😏
Then there's Mel Brooks' 1981, ''History of the World, Part One'' ...
De Monet: Sire, the peasants are revolting.
Louis XVI: You said it. They stink on ice,
@@HootOwl513 I had to look at the comments to see if someone would quote Mel Brooks. You did, so I don't have to.
Love that movie
I remember that joke from a Wizard of Id cartoon in the early '70s. Someone outside the castle shouted, "The peasants are revolting!" The King muttered, "You can say that again." I imagine he said it in a Groucho voice.
I read that what they said to get Wat Tyler so pissed off and kicked off the fight, was one of the King's servants claimed he knew Tyler from his city, and claimed he was just a common thief.
Kevin is such a good storyteller. I love the props and camera work. Way to go!
Thanks 👍
I was excited to see Kevin doing this event in history.
There’s not much info on UA-cam concerning the Peasant revolt but it seems to have important historical significance.
The ideas expressed in the manifesto by the peasants concerning human rights and personal freedom seem to be almost modern in their demands and their wishes for recognition by the upper class of personal rights and freedoms of all people - regardless of social standing. While the revolt did not achieve the aims of the participants, this could be considered the first time ever these ideals had been expressed in a formal document, paving the way for subsequent revolts and movements by the people for human rights and fair treatment for all - not just an elite upper class as had been the way going back to the earliest (recorded) human history.
Thanks for the great storytelling, Mr.Kevin! I was so glad when I saw you’d chosen to cover this fascinating event!
My pleasure, thanks for watching 👍🏻
When my husband and I visited England in 1999 (from Georgia, USA), we went to Canterbury Cathedral, and heard about Sudbury’s body with the cannonball. I’ve seen photos of his head at Sudbury. Guess his 2 pieces will never be reunited! I have a Henry III long cross penny I bought in Tewkesbury in 2014, and an Edward I coin I bought in Cornwall in 2022. I just love medieval England history and you tell it so well, Kevin!
How lovely, thank you. Imagine how many loaves of bread or pints of ale those coins might have purchased 😉
You really make this history come alive. Cheers from across the pond!
The way Hicks explains history, he's able to bring you back there and help you understand these incredible events!
They need to give Kevin a presenter role on BBC historical documentaries.
Lord Kevin Hicks with another tremendous lesson for us common folk. I’d reckon you would make a fine king. Thanks for your efforts and for being the best history teacher.
😜
Yep. The Plague. First thing I was thinking of when I've heard about the reasons. Thanks for the very detailed explanation
Is this the reason why the Corona virus is being sorted ; so that there is less chance of a plague ? ? .
This is one of my favourite events in history. To think what we peasants could do if we had the backbone & a good leader. They must have had amazing hardy horses to get the distances from differant places in the speed they did. Thanks again Kevin. Loved this
I truly appreciate your ability to tell history with background information.
This brings history alive and far more understandable 🤠
The way he said one of 18 heads to roll had me engrossed. I really wish someone would fund this guy. I love his castle tours! I especially like watching him in all his cool costumes more than whatever nonsense history channel passes as “history” today.
Thanks Charles, much appreciated 👍🏻
We're lucky enough to have some great support from generous Patreon members that helps when it comes to making and buying props and models.
Probably the best graphic account I have heard on this subject. Thank you.
Want to thank the algorithm for recommending this channel. Your story telling ability is top notch, plus extra points for the medieval clothing. Wish I could take a time machine just to checkout all these historical accounts. Power to the people! 💪😎
Cheers! Welcome to the channel 👍🏻
Your enthusiasm and ability to tell a story so well, mixed with the costumes and models you use. Is absolutely extraordinary. You deserve your own tv show
Thanks!!
So much of what happened seems applicable today. Awesome history lesson.
If my teachers taught like you I would have been a straight A student. You make everything so fascinating.
Excellent, top shelf. You explained it so vividly, it was like I was actually there....
Again.
Great to hear! 👍
Great episode Kevin. What really fascinated me about this rebellion was how empathetic and honourable the King was towards the rebels. He easily could have had them all executed,he could have refused to meet with them and ran away and gone into hiding. However even though he did make some mistakes,The king showed a lot of courage and empathy for the commoners and I think that in the end helped calm things down as I think if he had all the rebels punished it would have caused more anger and likely would have caused the rebellion to spread even further.
You make it sound like you could be there if you just shut your eyes for a minute. Amazing work Kev
Greetings once again from Nova Scotia, thank you for another top shelf video, I knew some of the details of this chapter in history, but you good sir, are a born teacher. I don't know but it feels like we may soon be down that road again. Anyway be safe and as always best regards, Arthur
Yes I believe that too. Perhaps you can recommend the video to happy socks, our Prime Minister.

Since I am from peasant stock myself, so do I 😆
I love this bloke. He explains everything so clearly and keeps you engaged , start to finish . Keep um coming 😊😊
Cheers Claire, will do 👍🏻
I recently watched a video on the tower of London, and this was part of it and how surfs become tenant farmers. But I'm always glad to get the full story here 👍 also how the young king handles himself pretty mature
Hey! It's gonna be a great day when Kevin talks to us about history!
Hell yeah. I was watching a coffeezilla video but as soon as this came on, boom here i am. Great start to a Friday.
That’s what I’m saying 😂
Same here bro
No contest.
😂 thanks for watching
I always love how nonchalant people look during depictions of catastrophic events of the Middle Ages. Look how happy those little guys are in the thumbnail
😜
Excellent Kevin cheers again.🏴🇬🇧
Recently watched a Tony Robinson documentary on the same subject ... and even with all the money, time, production costs, having bloody Mike Loades ride the entire route on a horse!! I even think you where in it 😂😂 It had nothing on this! I only wish your videos were longer, would love to see you star in a full on documentary! The way you portray history is inspiring ... Amazing video Kevin, great watch!
Wow, that's really kind of you thanks. D'you know I did once appear in a Tony Robinson video about Robin Hood, but I was told he wouldn't appear on screen with me 😏
@@thehistorysquadKevin, that was his loss, not yours!!!!!!!!!!!!😂😢😮😅😊
And definitly not ours 😄
@@thehistorysquadWhy would he not appear with you? I am not surprised by his absurd attitude, by the way.
awesome episode Kevin, its almost through out history the common people always seem to loose one way or another. Was like that in the Swiss Peasant War of 1653
This man is quite devoted to a realistic presentation of the past. Great video.
A pleasure as always. Thanks Kevin.
I studied this in College, but this is the best telling of the story, I have heard. I have never truly understood how serfdom survived for so long.
Hope you’re looking after those eyes 😉
I think you touched on this before but lovely to hear a much more detailed account of it - Cheers Kevin
Always a great start to the workday when the History Squad uploads
Enjoy!
Peasants revolt is darn close to a civil war almost. Jolly good show my kind sir. Thank you Kevin!✌️
Another gem! Not from England but allways wait ur new videos.
I love the way you explain things. So well, in fact, I listen twice just to hear you outline everything for us.
Wow, thank you!
Bells ring out,
Notifications sent,
A tapestry from the History Squad,
Does forth present,
A tale of woe?
A fight between armies?
Or a policeman's tale,
In a graveyard eating sarn'ies,
Enthralled with these stories,
We conjure images in awe,
Of Kings and their archers,
As they lay down the law,
Or Frontier tales,
Of Indians fighting Custer,
Or just how in medieval times,
Did armies they muster?
Tales and lore,
Patiently read,
Kev never forgetting,
To count up the dead,
There will surely be blood,
Man’s inhumanity and it’s suffering,
But always at the good bit,
My phone will start buffering,
So thank you Kev,
For thy stories of dread,
Which I serve up at night-time,
To my wife, in our bed.
🤣 how absolutely lovely, I’m so humbled by your excellent poem. Thank you.
What a great story, you told it very well too.

Thank you for an excellent presentation. I grew up in Mile End and I remember the 600th anniversary of The Peasant's Revolt very well. A wonderful mural commemorating the event was painted on the wall of a Tower Hamlet's building in 1981. The spirit may have died (more than a little) but the memory remains. Richard II went on to become a disastrous monarch and was usurped by Henry Bolingbroke. Robber barons eh, who needs parasites like royalty. One day...
