I love this video. I was born in 43 in Capitola. My first memories of Soquel were going to nursery school there at the white church on Soquel Ave and Center St. I remember a cute little blond girl named Kathy Hurst. Across the street was a Gallo Wine warehouse. In 1951, in the 3rd grade, I had Miss Woolsey as my teacher. Other kids I remember from that area were: Butch Finta. His dad was a dentist. I remember Allen Bishop. His father owned a farm south of town. I see that there is a Bishop Ln there now. I remember Danny Hungerford, and Lynn Jay Egbert. One day in Miss Woolsey’s class Lynn Jay and another kid were looking at a picture of Jesus Christ on the wall of the school room, and the one boy said that Jesus was just a fairy tale like Santa Claus, but Lynn Jay insisted that he was real. Lynn Jay turned to me and asked me about it. My parents had never mentioned Jesus in our home so I had no idea, but something deep inside said he was real so I supported Lynn Jay. The Principal of Soquel School was Del Mar Miller in those days. In 1952 I was among the first to go to Capitola school leaving Soquel School behind. In Soquel at the other end of town from the church was a hardware store and I used to buy my bbs for my Daisy bb gun there. I also bought a bow and arrows there. I contributed to the Soquel’s economy at 8 years old. My dad built the Laundry Matt in Capitola and the Hicks family lived next door. They moved up Cherry Vale. I used to go up there and they had an orchard. I remember eating apples from their tree. One other kid I knew up Cherry Vale was Ray Vail. I remember going to Camp Sokomo up the Old San Jose road from Soquel. Great fun place. There used to be an old wooden bridge that crossed the Soquel Creek/river. It was just downstream from the bridge that is there by the school. Anyway a friend of mine, Billy Gay, was in a car when the old bridge collapsed and he was killed. I have lots of fond memories of Soquel. In 1953 my parents divorced and my mom and I moved to Hawaii. That ended my memories of both Capitola and Soquel. What a great place it was to grow up in.
I kept saying to myself " Don't forget the free cookie"and I will never forget the starter bread,l used to race my slot cars behind the blacksmith shop. And l was at the Soquelorama parades.where l met Charles Schultz and Mr Crenshaw who wrote the Belvedere cartoons. My sister worked at the Soquel cinema, so l got to see a lot of movies for free.l remember when Disco showed up and it was a big deal ,new construction ,a big grand opening ,l only used it for sporting goods ,fishing and bbs for my spitting image
