  • Educational range event for The Citadel history of WW1 class. MG08 Russian conversion to 7.62x54R. Over the space of 2 months, we went from not feeding at all, to 600+ rounds by the cadets in attendance. Nickname of "The Devil's Paintbrush" was rightly earned, as the carnage of WW1 shows. Cannot perform at this level? Do NOT attempt.

    When machine guns were first introduced in the War the Generals thought that they could just mass rush them because 'They'll never be able to fire enough ammo to stop them'. Well...it was documented that several guns on the German side fired over a million rounds each in a 3 day battle with very little breakage. It took thousands and thousands of men's lives trying to overwhelm them before the Generals finally gave up on that tactic...likely because they didn't have anything else to try until the tanks were introduced. Maxim guns are still awesome and deadly weapons.

      Watercooled guns, while for most uses, unneeded today, do have on big advantage that, while niche, is indispensable in that niche as is being seen in Ukranian trench fighting, The ability to fire near indefinitely without the need for frequent barrel changes, which for area denial is a huge asset.

    Hey mark, unrelated comment but I had a question about barrel shortening. I have a 24” stainless bull barrel that’s fluted. I’d like to knock it down to 18” and rethread the barrel. I’d have no issues if it wasn’t fluted but how would you go about doing that? Chuck it on a lathe and knock the flutes off?

    • @Tunkkis
      @Tunkkis 8 місяців тому

      How deep are the flutes, would they cause inconsistencies in the thread diameter? If not, I don't immediately see why you'd need to do anything different.
