I appreciate your being mature enough to admit your shortcomings as an instructor. You have my confidence now.

Go around, go around, go around, don't land downwind!

I had a vortex ring incident with a student once, I got a bit too involved discussing the radio calls with him and didn't realise the wind had shifted slightly and was no longer a simple crosswind but had a slight tailwind component. That said, I've also had a student go around from an approach that got too steep and he ended up closing the throttle at 50', that was exciting...
I don't agree with saying never make a downwind approach though, not for students that are beyond private level. There are times you may have to do them commercially and it's better to learn them with an instructor than a passenger! They're perfectly safe as long as you keep the rate of descent under control. Downwind circuits are actually part of the commercial syllabus in Europe.

Thanks for the feedback! I know there are some that teach downwind landings, that's the decision of any given pilot. My take on downwind landings came from a long time helicopter accident investigator. He stated the problem with allowing people to do downwind landings is they start to believe it's ok. So they continue to do it. Then they say well I landed with a 3 knot tailwind, a 5 knot tail wind will be ok as well. Over time they get more comfortable and decide to keep landing downwind out of convenience, and start pushing the envelope. Then eventually a downwind landing causes them to get in over their head and they crash the the helicopter. I find that pretty relevant coming from an accident investigator that travels to scenes to try and determine why a helicopter crash took place. I don't teach downwind landings. No where that I have trained or worked since 1997 has taught or expected downwind landings. Beauty of a helicopter, we don't need a runway. I can always find a way to land without having to do it downwind. If I ever felt downwind was the only way, I wouldn't land there. I have worked many commercial jobs. No operator has ever put me in a position that I had to land downwind. Thanks again for sharing.

@@HelicopterGround Interesting, although I suspect the logical conclusion of talking to an accident investigator is never to get into a helicopter again!
I used to work from a very busy heliport in class D airspace. It was right on the coast and it wasn't unusual for there to be some wind shear which led to the favoured direction at the heliport being different to the runways. The controllers wouldn't generally allow an opposite direction landing (and you had to follow a specific route) so sometimes there was a tailwind component. I remember chatting to a guy when I did my Robinson safety course and he was about to start flying tours from a helipad, and buildings dictated there was one route in and out so there was always a tailwind component for either takeoff or landing. He'd never done either before!
I've also found situations where I'd rather accept a small tailwind component than a tall obstacle or mixing with fixed wing traffic. You obviously have to be aware that you're doing it but there's little risk if you stick to the 30 knots/300fpm rule. Obviously with the caveat that if you're not comfortable doing it you shouldn't, especially not because some guy on the internet says it's ok!

As you're describing and demonstrating with the prop, I was frightened just watching. I'm happy with the outcome because sometimes you need to scare the shit out of yourself for a lesson to stick. Also, nothing was damaged, just an ego.

Fixed wings have a similar requirement on the practical tests, but you typically have to demonstrate one go around anyway. So if your precision landing maneuver is off, consider it your go around demonstration 😊

Landing down wind doesn’t cause vortex ring state I know you know that but landing down wind is something that they should learn because in the real world they will be put in a situation that it will be needed.
They just need to know 3 things all at the same time that will get your ass
Kenny I love you school I am a member private -Commercial and I’m working on my CFI great stuff keep up the good work

Collective controls the angle, Cyclic controls the speed. You should be able to stop right over your intended spot! You are probably flying the end of the approach too fast! Slow it down, make the aircraft stop where you want it to stop! Thanks for sharing!

Go around, Always a good call
    1. Settling with power/ Topping - DA and surface Altitude exceed the power limitations of engine - Rotor RPM droops , Lower collective.
Lower power demand and go around above translational lift or best climb speed (50+kts)
    2. Vortex Ring State - Aerodynamic re ingestion of Rotor tip vortexes , Fly out of it, Forward or sideways, Needs fresh air.
It gets feeling sloppy in the controls, Shakes a little and the bottom falls out from under you. Don't wait for the bottom stuff.
    3. Over pitching, You pull too much collective and the rotor RPM droops, easy with an R-44 , Milk that collective!
I bet it was an Enstrom you had, They're built like tanks🏴‍☠

You got to wonder what kind of insanity is that.
