I have been doing Windows support for decades, started with CPM, went to DOS, and was a Domain Admin, at a previous location, and the more I learn about Windows, the more I want something else once I retire, I'm currently 69 years old, but not quite ready yet.
This is my first time to use linux and I don't know how to use the web browser

I end up using Linux in virtual machines or i vnc to a machine else wear because i need proprietary programs for mac and windows (windows is a VM also) for work.
Same. I have a beefy Windows machine that I use for recording and hosting VMs. And an older Mac on my desk for the few Mac-specific things I need on a daily basis. (Messages, for example)
I love Linux, but I'm not a zealot. :)
Well I would like to not switch off Windows but my college is making me learn Linux for IT Infrastructure... so... I kind of have to.

Sorry for the late reply -- yes. I had bad luck with their testing software several years back, but they're a very reputable organization.
No, ESXi (VMware ESXi) does not run Linux on the hardware and then build on top of it. ESXi is a bare-metal hypervisor, which means it runs directly on the hardware without the need for a separate operating system like Linux.
When you install ESXi on a physical server, it becomes the primary operating system and directly interacts with the hardware. It provides a virtualization layer that allows you to create and manage multiple virtual machines (VMs) on the same physical server.
While I absolutely refuse to argue the merits of what literally went to court several times - if not Linux, ESXi is an extremely Linux-like OS.
You can literally install Linux drivers into the ESXi kernel, and I’ve done so personally to get specific unsupported hardware working.
Proxmox is considered a bare-metal hypervisor too. And it’s running Debian under the hood.
@@shawnp0wers Oh I see. It's just I was like "what, I didn't know that". Then I started googling this stuff - didn't find anything. Then I asked ChatGPT if it's true and it's like nope. Then I said "but there is someone knowledgeable who says it's true" and then it's like "nope". So I just copied the text from the ChatGPT hoping somebody would clarify it. So thanks😅.
Perfect! Sorry if I sounded harsh - the ESXi/Linux thing was (and occasionally still is) an ugly argument. I was hoping you weren’t litigating whether their kernel was Linux or not. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter much to me, but the argument doesn’t add much value to conversation.

Once you have the knowledge, you can go set up your own Linux server and practice all you want.
