I agree with you Anthony. I call this video a good refresher for remebering fractions. I don't recall in any of my school maths classes any teacher say that fractions are meant to teach us logical thinking. School is only good to teach you to learn, expect yu to stay with the curriculum and if you want to really learn, seek help outof school, because school is their to create employees.

Hello. Is the reason you aren't doing the same with the previous adding example on the last adding example { when you see, if a times table fits into it, and if not you see how many times the denominator goes into it} ending up with example ( 1 -1/12 because in the last example the denominator with bigger than the nominator? so you just keep it how it is ?

@@insertnamehere5864 yes, you just have to subtract the two multiplications. So for example 1/4 - 1/3 will be (3-4)/12. So instead of adding 1x3 + 1x4 as seen in the video when adding the fractions, you only subtract them.

This method is still essentially the same as what I was taught at school with lowest common denominators (LCM) . In the first example, 12 *is* the LCM of 3 and 4. In the second, 15 *is* the LCM of 3 and 5. So I don't really see much difference here. It just bypasses finding the *lowest* common denominator and replaces it with the *easiest* one.
This approach could then give you difficulty with for example adding sixths and thirds, the LCM of which is 6, but we would end up with a denominator of 18 and the result would need reducing.

    • @tecmath

This works with relatively prime numbers in denominators.
Let's say we have 1/14+1/6. We're going to try and make the denominators relatively prime.
We choose the greatest common factor of denominators, 14 and 6, which is 2. We divide the denominators and the do the trick in the video. Then we multiply the denominators with the GCF again. Done.
    Example:
    1/14+1/6
    = 1/2 × (1/7+1/3)
    = 1/2 × *(3/21+7/21) --> the trick*
    = 1/2 × 10/21
    10/42

This is not the best method for a problem like:
    2/6 + 2/9.
The common denominator is 18. If you used this method you would get a denominator of 54 and need to reduce.
The traditional method (knowing your times tables) is still the fastest way.

    Adding Fractions with Different Denominators
    Jan 13, 2018
What I'm asking is... how do you know when you can use "Adding Fractions Instantly," and get the right answer?
Also, what would help is additional parts to your You Tube episodes with Part 2, Part 3, etc, using different example problems to gain additional practice, and gain the confidence of seeing and doing different fraction addition problems--as well Subtracting Fractions, Multiplying Fraction, and Dividing Fractions.
Thus, can you add, subtract, Multiply, and Divide two, three, four, five fractions using your instant method? Or, is there an easy way to find / know when the instant method works?
