That 96 King of the Ring is probably the best multiperson layered story. Before that the story was the guy who won’s story only. Whereas Steve’s year needed Jake Roberts to play his cards perfectly. Which he did. But he wanted Steve pushed in the worst way. He was the only one in the office advocating for Steve. (Mind you he was still heel at this point. King of the Ring could easily be WWE's G1 if they actually booked it like it meant something. Maybe the winner gets the summerslam main event or something.

You can do a lot with a KoTR format - start with 8 to a final two - You could have a belt on the line (I.e. the champion could be eliminated and the belt vacant during the semis/finals of the tournament), you could have 3 match stipulations per round - a normal match, a falls count anywhere etc etc. It could be a workhorse showcase

OSW's KOTR 94 review is a must watch...ARTO DONO!!! is hilarious. The man had clearly never ever watched wrestling in his life before being chosen as a commentator, and he spent the whole time having what was happening in the ring explained to him, or asking how much every guy weighed 😂
1 year late, but when I started my own alternate wrestling leagues (in secret notebooks ofc), I had WWE itself as a tournament without any knowledge of how it ACTUALLY worked, and that it was scripted. And I only started realising this and change the format in 2020.
I legit miss Owen. His death was by far the biggest tragedy that I've seen with wrestling. He was like Jericho, you could love him, you could love to hate him, and he could control those emotions on the flip of a dime. WWF, at the time, had a gem in Bret, yes, sure. He is my favorite all-time after all. But Owen kind of got pigeon-holed behind him. Had he came a long in the 70-80's Owen would have been a multiple WWF champion and one of the biggest stars on the card. WWF seriously misused his talent, and because of one dumb gimmick, he lost his life to an accident. It was a damned shame and probably one of the saddest days in wrestling.
Randy Savage won the 1987 tournament but didn’t start using the “Macho King” gimmick until 1989 when he beat Jim Duggan for the crown. Harley Race had won the 1986 tourney and taken on the “King” moniker, but when he went out with an injury in 1988 Bobby Heenan passed the crown to Haku (Ted DiBiase won the actual tournament that year) who was later beaten by Duggan for the crown. So Haku and Duggan are both counted as former Kings of the Ring even though neither ever won the tournament.
When he said the last king of the ring to date I forgot he meant ppv and not just some match on smackdown Still can’t believe it’s been a year and baron is still using the king gimmick
One of the greatest promos of all time was cut by a guy who suffered a mouth injury less than an hour prior. Sometimes you gotta ask God, "seriously Dude, who writes this shit?".
Bret and Diesel didn't close out the 1994 event because it was where Anvil went from being on Bret's side to being on Owen's, hence why he caused the DQ (to ensure that Bret kept the title for Owen to chase) and then later helped to win the tournament. Yo! It’s me! It’s me! It’s D.D.P! Ah DDP my childhood idol and favorite wrestler from when I was 3 to 12 years old. He was the real life version of the little engine that could when he (someone the higher ups of WCW said would never get over and never be a star) became a red hot mega star easily as famous as the rock and stone cold at the time and became a 3 time WCW champion because he deserved to be and not because he was hand picked to be like other guys. Please do an “every Bound For Glory tournament ranked from WORST to BEST.” There are golden shows in TNA/Impacts yearly tournament that they actually DO treat like a G1 climax and not some one off every couple years thing like WWE with KoTR
What I have noticed about all these ranking videos, is that the rankings are based on a present day view and not the view of when it happened. For example, in 2000 Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, and Chris Jerhico were all great wrestlers, but they were mid-carders. They put on some great matches competing for the IC and European Championships, but them being eliminated in the early rounds is not that surprising.
Bret vs. Diesel didn't close KOTR 94 because of The Anvil. Neidhart caused the DQ and then left Bret to take a beating. The announcers & fans were left wondering why until he came out later to help Owen win the tournament final to complete the heel turn. Couldn't have Anvil in Bret's corner after helping Owen win the tournament.
Between Billy Gunn and Mabel, I'd argue Gunn was the better winner. He won the King of The Ring Tournament in a better place and time for the WWF. Plus, he didn't injure one of the top players in the company and did eventually win major singles gold in the form of the Intercontinental Championship.
In Billy Gunn's defense, at least he was a good worker who was well-suited for the tag team division. But he never had the it factor when it came to being a singles star.
How bad with King Billy Gunn? The Rock went on WWF Heat and cut the epic "Dear God" promo. Which is like Deadpool double-tapping his X-Men Origins counterpart, then emptying the rest of the clip in terms of killing a wrestler's push.
I've always felt that the winner of the King of the Ring should get a World title match at Summerslam much like the Royal Rumble winner gets a World title match at Wrestlemania
King Of The Ring 1998 was definitely the Best KOTR PPV event of all time, mainly because of The Hell in a Cell Match between The Undertaker vs. Mankind. Till this day that Hell in a Cell match to me was the Greatest of all Hell in a Cell matches! There were other good matches in this event, but if it wasn't for that Undertaker and Mankind Hell in a Cell the 1998 King Of The Ring would not be the best one.
I have got to say I am VERY surprised that 1994 made it so high on the list. Most consider it mid at best. The match between Bret Hart and Kevin Nash as Diesel was definitely the highlight, and was a GOOD match, but was far from legendary. Mostly because Nash had torn groin muscles and was in pain the whole time, and I imagine Bret was being extra careful with him because of that, since that was the sort of guy Bret was. Were Nash in good shape I think the match could have been a legend. The whole Roddy vs Lawler thing was a terrible gimmick match that somehow was made the headliner. How do you make a gimmick match the headliner when you have the Intercontinental Champion fighting the Heavyweight Champion for the Heavyweight Belt? That's the formula for the GIANT main event of Wrestlemania VI, only 4 years earlier! Granted Diesel didn't win the belt (match ended in a disqualification), but that wasn't supposed to be a given! While some of the KotR matches were good, mostly Owen's, the rest weren't anything special from what I hear. I was actually there at the time, but I was young and didn't have a good seat.
12:30 yea that was the year I went from a religious PPV buying viewer to falling off completely till when the rock would pop up or something I’m just now trying to give it another go in 2022 not impressed so far I spend most my time going on UA-cam for the good ole days
I don’t think Shamrock was a misfire at all, i think they should have pushed him harder, he was super believable and could go in the ring very well. He could have been a great no-nonsense lone wolf tweener.
There's a weird historical fact. Kane was the one who ended Austin's first reign as WWF Champion. Not The Undertaker, The Rock, or Triple H. Kane. Lovely stuff.
Hey i think i know one thing that may have killed king of the ring the brand split and the increase in titles and more rivalries so they can have more meaningful matches as most tournament matches where not that good especially when the show is mostly tournament
Honestly I wish king of the ring was a big deal like it was back in the day, and not some one off thing WWE does every once in a while.
I know. It's a good way to push someone.
I think it could be perfect as a gritty, hard hitting NXT tournament with a shot at the NXT title going to the winner

12:30 yea that was the year I went from a religious PPV buying viewer to falling off completely till when the rock would pop up or something I’m just now trying to give it another go in 2022 not impressed so far I spend most my time going on UA-cam for the good ole days
Lesnar vs Test at KOTR 2002 was a genuine banger, just two slabs of meat beating the shit out of each other.
If only Nia got the same treatment as Viscera 🥺
Am I the only one who liked King Mabel? I think a lot of the hate comes from things that took place behind the scenes (injuries etc)
King Mable is one of my favorites
He’s not like most Kings
Who only protect their opponeants
And don’t crush Takers face
He’s not like most kings
I like him as Viscera. I remember my niece being scared of him.
Injuries and the fact his matches were sloppy snoozefests
Antonio Figueroa However he at least got the proper skill in the ring unlike someone like Nia Jax or Ronda Rousey
We should do all kings ranked
Shame Ross couldn’t do this list with a certain gimmick
Dibiasse best king of all time
Every US champion ranked and every ECW champion ranked please please and please.
Having one of the members of the channel calling himself "King"'?... I can't see this idea taking off the ground =\
imagine if ross did that. jk that’s never happen
Billy Gunn NEVER missed an opportunity,
TO MISS AN OPPORTUNITY.....
