- Cars during the 1950s were starting to get a lot more power as well as lots of chrome and flare. The auto industry was changing fast and people were enjoying this post war era. These cars helped pave the way for decades to come in the auto world. In this video we will have a look at some 1950s snapshots of people with cars.

@RhettyforHistory hey I love your channel alot but I had one video I wanted to show a friend but noticed it wasn't up anymore I believe it was about 70s or 80s snacks and drinks but I can't find it anymore.

My parents had a 1956 Chevy Bel Air convertible. We moved to Florida from Ohio during 1958 in it. Six of us crammed in it with our possessions. Left Florida 4 years later in the same car this time with a leaking back plastic window and now there were 7 of us. 😁
Oh my! That was a nice car but that would have been packed. Sure can't do something like that with a car today. It would require an SUV. Thank you for watching and sharing a memory with us.

Funny we moved to Texas in a 59 Ford pu there were 4 cramed in front an 4 in the back trying to find some sort of spot to where you could at least stretch your legs if only for a min. Dad said dress in shorts an tank tops, lol ! We practically froze on the way down. That's how we did it with a pu piled full.3 girls in back 1 boy. The other 2 sat in front being as they were almost still very young .
@@texas6060 😁 To funny. It had to be a generation thing. Lots of kids, squeezing them in a vehicle and let’s go relocate. My youngest brother was still an infant. I remember during the trip back to Ohio he was laying in a laundry basket. No child seats or safety equipment needed. 😁
I am a Ford guy, but the 57 Chevy BelAire was thee standout car of the 50’s for me. Love those body lines and interiors. When I see a restored one, it just looks like the king of the road still today.
It really is a true classic American car. Thank you for watching and sharing one you love. Ford had some great cars in the decade too. At least in my opinion.

My daughter is a millennial and would give her eye teeth for a 57 Bel Air. If I ever win the lottery, she'll get her red and white one then!

Vert true. Not just the price but also the repairs and gas.
Just before I was transferred from Ft. Polk, LA to Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana in 1971, I bought a 1962 Chrysler Newport for $300. I drove it back to Illinois and then from Chicago to Indiana on weekends, with 4 other guys who lived in Chicago and helped pay for the gas. I remember how excited we'd get when we could get WLS on the radio as we got closer to home. I sold it and got a 1966 Mustang when I went to Ft. Carson. Wish I still had both.

I see these 50s cars on the road sometimes and it is always a marvel to see one still up and running. While your car from 2022 have all sorts of problems with less than 10,000 miles on it.
They really were well made. You had to learn how to work on them a little but that could also be part of the fun. Thank you for watching!
I love 50s cars and trucks. My favorite is 50s Mustangs and Corvettes! 🥰
The corvette became legendary. Ford's response was the thunderbird. Overall they really didn't have much of an answer. But they did lead the way on the pony cars when the Mustang came out in 1964&1/2. Thank you for watching!
Does anyone remember a restaurant in the 90s that served food in a box shaped like a Chevy Bel Air convertible? I had one on my shelf as a kid because I loved the car (and the color), but now I can't think of where I got it.

1950s and 1960s had a lot of car designers that had been aircraft designers in the late 1930s- 1940s when the government cut contracts they were hired by car companies to streamline their cars. My favorite is the 1957 Crown Victoria convertible

Right after my parents married in 1956 they got a 1957 Ford Country Sedan Wagon - which was a Del Rio with four doors! One thing I loved about it was that the turn signals made the same sound as Rosie the robot maid on The Jetsons! Haha!

My favorite car from the 50’s is the 1958 Plymouth Fury in Candy Apple Red. My father (rip) drove one in ‘67 but it was white. He would sit me in the front seat between mom and himself and we would go to the antique shop he owned. I always got a small bag of candy from Mr. Moore from across the street for $.10. Yes, I’m olllld :P (65) and love this channel for some of the memories it brings. :) Thank you, Rhetty.

When I was little we had a 65 Sport Fury. That car was a beast and could really move!
The '57 Chevy Bel Aire was pretty cool. I had neighbor who had one in the 1980's that was red and white.

My grandparents usually drove either a Lincoln or a Cadillac. We had a Nash Rambler wagon and later in either 1958 or 59 we got a Ford Wagon. It was the first time I ever saw seat belts in a car. I enjoyed this, you always take me back to my younger days. It was fun seeing all these old cars from my childhood.

I had lots of Fifties era hot wheels. I had a little car wash play set and I’d pretend to have them go through the washing process. It was so much fun!

My grandparents were Lincoln owners. I think they bought new cars from Kumpf Lincoln/Mercury here in Denver for decades. Anyway, they always attested, “The wrong kind of people drove Cadillacs.” 🤷♂️ My earliest car-related memory is my mom’s 1960 Ford Country Squire wagon. White with a red interior. And, yes, acres of fake wood siding. Lots of great memories of my mom and that station wagon, especially hot summer afternoons at the A&W root beer stand having lunch!

My Dad used to race a 56 and a 57 Chevy. One of them was painted Competition Orange, and the other was painted Purple Passion. He called that one his purple people eater. I have photos of that one somewhere.... and right out of high school I owned a 62 Chevy Ii and I raced it. I met the guy I was later to marry in the staging lane during time trials, at Amarillo Dragway in 1982, (where my Son races now). LOL
Sounds like racing is in your son's genes for sure. I never knew you did that before. I've always loved those old Chevy II's and Novas. My favorite is the 66 and 67 years. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories!

Great video Rhett. And so many nice old pictures of classic cars. I graduated in 1972 and around that time there were many 1950's cars for sale. Over the years I owned three 57 chevs and one 57 ford. The 57 chevy Nomad was the car to own if you could find one.

Love the 1950's era cars my favorite has to be the 1956 Chevrolet BelAir, of which I own a 2 door hardtop model of. It's been in the family since 1976 when my dad bought for $275 dollars. We are in the process of restoring it now it was a factory black car with black and white interior. My dad and 2 uncles all had 1955 Chevrolet BelAir 2 door hardtops. My dad still has his

I took my first driver's test in a 56 Chevy. Passed the test in my Mom's Comet. My first car, Mustang 67 with vinyl roof.😊

Great looking cars . An era of styling we will never see again. I always wanted a 1958 Buick Limited 2door hardtop. I know some auto enthusiasts berate these cars for all their chrome but that's why I like them. Thanks for sharing these vintage photos with us Rhett.

I do remember cruising Douglas street in Wichita, Ks in my 1958 Chevy Delray. With my high school sweetheart.

It really is a style that hasn't really been used again. I know Ford had a little nod to it with the Thunderbird but it would be great to see the fins and other things come back somehow. Thank you for watching and sharing what your family had.

Hi Rhetty! I remember my brother in law let me take his 1970 Bright Red Ford Mustang to work only because my car was in the shop and the hospital called because of an emergency. All I can say is, its truly a beautiful car but honestly, I couldn't drive it everyday for fear someone would hit it or even a dent! Too much pressure driving someone else's car, Family or not! Next time, I'll call a taxi 😂

Thank you, Rhett. Loved these memories. I love the '57 Ford Thunderbird partly b/c I was a huge fan of American Graffiti. Loved Suzanne Somers' car in the movie. I also love the classic '57 Chevy Bel Air, two-door, convertible. The sportier the better. ❤

My dad had in the mid 60's a '57 Chevy Nomad station wagon which had a huge engine. It was a sleeper car for racing. He took out all the seats, etc... and just left the Driver and Passenger seats. He won many a race because othe racers underrated it because it was a station wagon! LOL!

I am old enough to remember all these cars and see them whhen they were new. Dad was a Buick man for years and in later life turned to Ford.

My dad had a 1951 Chevy two door sedan, 3 on the tree and an inline six. He was a house painter, and carried his extension ladders tied to the top, and shorter ones stuck in the trunk. I was amazed then and more so now that the top was never bent in from the weight. We had a tree that was needing to be cut, a big maple, as he was cutting it set down on the bar. No luck using wedges to get the bar loose, one of my older brothers climbed up hooked a chain around it and down to the old 51 and took that maple down. I am amazed today as to what little it takes to total out a car. Don't look side ways at a new model.
They really were built tough and your story is proof of that. I would hate to be in collision with one of those in a modern car. Thank you for watching and sharing what your family had.
Love the trip down memory lane. Learned about cars on dad’s 1955 Pontiac Star Chief. It was also my job to wash and wax it. The worst part was cleaning all the chrome. And gas!!! Oh my god! $0.29/gal. Fill up the oil and check the gas.
‘55 and ‘57 Chevies was were it was at.
All that chrome sure is pretty though! I miss the actual metal chrome but it was a constant need of shining to keep it from rusting. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories!

My mom had a green 1968 Pontiac. I learned how to drive in that car. I loved that car! When it eventually broke down she got an orange Gremlin to replace it.😆

I’m into a lot of horror movies. Yet in a few weeks as I’m typing this, I’m going to a horror convention that will have Christine in display in Chicago
Yet I bet those cars run at a high price. I saw one in a car show a few years back. It was not a red one, but they were selling it for $50K, it was in mint condition. There were also a lot of other 50’s and 60’s cars in that show.
Oh wow. That one photo of James Dean next to his Porsche at the gas station (toward the beginning) totally jumped out at me. It's supposedly the last photo of him right before he died in that car. Yes lots of other celebrity cameos but that one jumped out!

My old neighbor who has passed away about two decades ago strongly disliked those cars. She said, "you could hear the engine all the time, all the time!" She also said, "starting those cars in winter was a real chore. You needed a toolbox."
Those cars may have looked nice, but when you popped the hood, the technology underneath was quite crude. My neighbor absolutely loved her 1990's fuel-injected Ford Taurus. I miss her. She was such a friendly soul.
That last song reminds me of "Stray Cat Strut" by The Stray Cats.

That was the era that cars 🚗 were built to last. Chevy Bel Air, Ford Fairlane, Ford Galaxie, and many others, these cars 🚗 weren’t produced by the masses. They were built on an assembly line, one ☝️ by one ☝️. A car 🚗 like 👍 this would last ya until your kids kid 👧 graduate 👩🎓, and until the have kids, and then they graduate 👩🎓.My favorite 😍 car 🚗 would probably be the Chevy Bel Air. I was born in 1956 and the first car I remember was a Nash Rambler…brown and beige I think. I remember climbing from the back seat to the front and than back again. Don’t remember what year it was. Our next car was a Mercury Comet…aqua…I think it was a 1962.

Love those big Buicks. I had a '57 Super with a modified Dynaflow trans and that thing was super quick - surprised the Fords and Chevies when they got beat by "a land yacht."
Yeah, I was once a street racer . . .
I remember back then, it was a big secret what the new models looked like because the cars would get shipped with covers on them, and remained covered at the dealers until their scheduled reveal date. It was a big deal. My parents bought a new car every year. It was a big event to go see new car models.
in the 50's I was in my 20's and could hardly wait for the look and design of the new models every year ,I owned a used 53 and then a 56 Studebaker called "Power Hawk"green-white color ,which I traded later for a new 58 Chevrolet brown-white color
Those old cars were the best: no computer chips, no seat belts, no GPS tracking, no automatic windows. Plus they had keys.

Hey Rhett, my favorite '50s cars were the '55 and '57 Chevy Bel Airs.
My dad liked the '56 Ford Falcon.
We had a '53 Chevy, can't remember the name of it, but I remember growing up in the '50s' and this Chevy that had no seat belts in it.
Our dad would get mad at us boys if we got too rambunctious, hitting each other and shifting from one side to the other side in the back seat.

One minor correction: Jet airliners didn't take over until the early Sixties, and it was a very rapid transition.
Jet and space fascination really took off in the 1950s. The first fighter jets were really used by the Germans during WW2. We had some too in the U.S. but they weren't used quite as extensively. After coming home from the European campaign my grandfather was a test pilot for many of the jet fighter planes. By the time the 50s came the American public became fascinated in them and that carried over into the 60s of course. Many of those old test pilots were like cowboys of their day.
@@RhettyforHistory I said AIRLINERS, not any aircraft. And I can authoritatively say so... because I was there. I rely on no third-party anecdotes, because I personally witnessed the transition.

Cars had more personality compared to the dull, cookie-cutter structures and color of today's automobiles.
