Helen Duff's narration of this Trilogy was so brilliant that I picked up a random book just to hear her voice again.
Thanks for mentioning about the Audiobook.
    Highly recommended

Yes, MORE ANGRY FEMALE CHARACTERS! Maybe a topic you could do a video on? Why we need more angry women, some of your personal favorites, etc. I, at least, would love to hear your thoughts and it seems like something that could be a lot of fun to talk about...
Also, this has been on my TBR on my audio book app, but you really convinced me I need to make it more of priority. It sounds awesome.

Matthew Bryan I love Essun! And pretty much every character NK Jemisin creates, angry woman or not. Haven't heard much about The Poppy War yet but I'll be sure to check it out now, thanks for the recommendation!

Mark Lawrence is my favorite author so I might be biased, but his other two trilogy's are also great.
They are definitely darker, but the thing he does great is you truly see though a characters eyes. One is a psychopath the other is a cowardly scoundrel.

I totally agree with everyone saying that if you love this you should read nevernight!! The narration in nevernight seems to be hit or miss for some people but I personally found it HILARIOUS and has a lot of similar themes. Religiousy school for assassins, strong friendships, ladies loving ladies, ruthlessness, crazy action ahh!

I haven't read this book yet. I'm considering it because I'm just about finished with Mark Lawrence's second trilogy, which takes place in the same world as his first trilogy, but with a very creative and very different tone from his first series. Regarding the "magic is convoluted" statement, you should 100% read his other works, and once you do, what I think you'll find is not only is he a very rare and very creative talent in fiction, but he's scary intelligent and well-educated (physics degree and mathematics PhD, research scientist in AI, holds secret clearances in both the US and the UK governments, etc.) and he writes very layered very deep books that can be read on several levels. When I say several levels I mean several. Like his first two series I'm just finishing up are all about the philosophy of moral relativism and so, so, so much more. There is so much depth of hidden meaning in the way he structures his stories and by the end of each book you will unlock major revelations to the plot and to the world building you didn't understand at the beginning of the story. These "unlocks" will get bigger each book until you finally get a strong sense of what it was all about and how it really all worked towards the end of the last book. As such, while the first books will be the biggest challenge in that structure, I highly recommend after finishing the series to read up on the hidden meanings of the book and then go back and reexperience the stories with a full perspective on events and world structure as I promise it will be an entirely new experience from the first time.

It's interesting for a man to write so many female characters. I already finished the 'Girl' trilogy part of which overlaps in the same world as this book. Great read though not if you want to get to sleep. Looking forward to the ending and the next two books.

As loads of people have said this sounds so similar to Nevernight, I recently read prince of fools by Mark Lawrence and really liked it so I'm excited to read this. As I know you like magic schools you should really read the lightbringer series by Brent Weeks, that book has a magic school too but also so much more, it's fantastic. The books are big but easy to get through, I'm a postgrad student too but I'm flying through the third book!

Both Nevernight and Lightbringer are on my TBR! I didn't realize Lightbringer had a magical school so that definitely bumps it up the list!

I've been trying to get into audiobooks with little success because I rarely like the way the narrator overacts or handles dialogue with multiple characters, but I really want to give this one a try now. Of course, that means that my library system doesn't have the audiobook on Overdrive. Naturally.

The book sounds interesting. I'll be checking out the Amazon sample. BTW, if you don't mind me saying, your skin looks like it's glowing--it's a compliment. It's probably your new lighting setup... or you're just really happy about your new place? Either way, glow on ;^)

I liked it a lot but like I mentioned before the young age of the girls made me cringe a bit. I still really enjoyed the book. Did you think Mark Lawrence used the voice (and inner voice) of a 10-12 year old for Nona though? I had many moments of thinking this is not a child speaking or thinking this. Maybe in this world they just are forced to grow up a lot faster.

I really really hope this is good. I love assassin's, I love lady characters, and training sequences are my jam. But.
Nevernight. Was noooot good. Or at least in my opinion. And it also had all of these things. Nevernight felt like it was trying to hard to be edgy. Hopefully Mark Lawrence can do it better.
