I would love for these two artists to create something together. Well, I guess they already did. Both Julien's cover and John's cover-cover are amazing examples of generative art at work. This song is more meaningful to me now than it was before.
I hope she saw this. "It's better, you should watch it." My mind would have exploded. (I think they're both very different but excellent, like -- you almost can't compare them?? Weirdly??) I do think he's having trouble shaking the original a little not just because he sings it all the time but also because she changes the melody a little bit -- which has to be a little weird to try and imitate when you wrote the melody and you didn't write the song she's improv-linking it to. His cover of her cover is ALSO a cool evolution though. I want them to hang out and just jam sometime.
It’s so annoying when the audience tries to sing along to the standard/recorded version of a song while the artist tries to do something creative… If you listen closely you can almost hear the cold hands of expectation wrapping around the neck of a muse.
It sounds like Darnielle himself is trying to shake singing it like normal too, it's got to have been hard for him; she transformed the song entirely and he has it in his head like a rubber stamp.
