Yes, you do. In some cases, if it is very little in the way of onboard controls regarding cue and skip then yes you will need a remote

Hello. I believe if you use +RW or +R discs on the pictured DVD/VCR combo unit or other similar Multiformat systems, the machine will automatically finalise the disc for you. Whereas -R or -RW will not.
