  • Spending some time working Sawyer the GSP on some quail. Pen raised birds have a stigma, so just say they are "training birds" then it all goes away.
Our hunting season is fast approaching and we got in a pretty good off season of bird work and conditioning.

I Iike using pigeons rather that quail. They fly better so there is less of a chance the dog will catch one and they fly home so I can use them again. Looks like a nice dog which should be fun to hunt with for years to come.

Pigeons are better if they aren't kill pigeons for sure. Quail are convenient for me although spotty on quality. Wish I had a pigeon coop! Quail do offer a few flushes and opportunities since they don't fly far. Thanks for watching!

When are those hats going to be available for purchase?

Oh man, I thought that might happen. I've been slacking on getting some built. Only a few close friends have any. I'll need to get my act together. Do you like this brown "coyote" color? Thanks for the interest.

Good work! I'd suggest getting some pigeons, they seem to work better in poor scenting conditions. I also know a place where you can get some really good pheasants that aren't ridiculously expensive, and probably not too far of a drive for you.

Yes I agree. I used to have access to pigeons but don't anymore. I did find a place that has some but couldn't get any for these dates. Chukar would probably be the best but if you know a place reach out to me. Email is on about section on channel or if you're on Instagram we stay active there. Thanks Dan!

    Hey Dave,
I’ve been watching your videos for around a year and have been impressed with your production quality. This one really brought out some great nostalgia for me, the runway at Bong is where I trained my first dog (Vizsla out of Busch Kennels in IL) to MH. Have since relocated to MN and switched to a setter but really enjoyed throwback memories that this video triggered.
    Cheers, Zach.

Thanks Zach, small world. My vizsla Kaizer was out of Busch as well! Small world and yes Bong is a great place to run dogs. As you can see I switched to a GSP which is what I had as a kid. I'm pretty fond of him but I have to admit, as primarily a ruffed grouse hunter a Setter is really a classic dog in the woods. Hope you're able to get out and chase the king, we'll be up there soon. Just finishing our trip to the Montana prairies now. Thanks for your support.

What you are doing in this video, is "put and take". So are some youth hunting opportunities and most commercial preserves and private country clubs. What is NOT "put and take" is state administered pheasant stocking programs. This language has been crafted into an anti-hunting narrative. In addition, it misleads hunters into thinking they are going to have a preserve-like experience.

The stocking program on this property is 12000 birds per season, ~250 per day. Whether you call it put and take or stocking, the experience is the same as a preserve on this property, I've hunted it. Other areas of the state's stocking program is more accurate to the point I think you're making. There are thousands of training birds released on this property each year, so the anti-hunting groups will have plenty to critique no matter what you call it.

Hi Dave, congratulations on the beautiful territory you trained Sawyer in. I know the difficulties of running dogs in the summer season on cage birds. That's why I say you did a great job. I see good retrieving, the training at the lake went well! Now the season is about to start, I'm happy for it and I hope it can be for you too! 🪶🪶🪶 Ciaoooo!

Stefano, hello to you! I like the slow pace of the off season training but can't wait for the real thing. Sawyer is doing well and we're ready for the the prairies. We'll be leaving in about a week for our western trip. Hope you have a great opener!
