In an era of insane, all time central midfield players like Zidane, Seedorf, Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta, Modric, Ballack, Kroos, Scholes, Lampard, et cetera Stevie was always near the top of the bunch. I won't say he is better than anyone aforementioned but he is certainly not worse. Zizou even called him the best in the world several times.
Comparisons are futile. Watch the video. Gerrard's technical ability and touch are often overshadowed by his physical attributes & athleticism, passing, aggression, engine and long range shooting, however this video displays his technical ability well.
This man was a true competitor. A warrior with the heart of a lion. He would make an occasional large profile mistake, but that is because he ALWAYS wanted the ball. Elite winners mentality. One of the most clutch players in the history of the game. Late minute goals were drawn to HIM. An unparalled captain and leader.
Thank you Stevie to your loyalty to the club you loved and the people of Liverpool.

The amount of games he won Liverpool that they had no business winning was insane.
I remember watching him in Istanbul. That was a man that was only leaving the pitch in two ways: with a winners medal around his neck, or in a coffin from dying trying to win.
His pace and strength is so underrated. He was a hell of a player in his prime

Wasn't really that type of graceful player.
Zidane, Scholes, and Pirlo were easier on the eyes.
Gerrard had rugged and robust looking play, but he was a technician.
Good dribbler, decent in 1v1s and hard to get the ball off.
Could play short or long with either foot, inside or outside trivela.
Players like him and Milner rarely get the baller creds, because theyre not as easy on the eye. But both are actually very technical players.
People call me high for saying this all the time.
But if I'm a coach that wants to win, I'm taking Gerrard over Zidane, Scholes, Pirlo and the rest. Gerrard had it all.
@@greatteacherhugo I would agree with this take. Stevie was not the most elegant player ever. Damn was he effective though, as you said. Few players could influence the game like Gerrard.
Honestly I think in terms of the complete midfielder from the same era, I think Clarence Seedorf is the most akin to Gerrard and vice versa. Both super strong defensively, crazy passing range, technical in tight spaces, controlled the tempo of the match and could unleash a long distance thundercunt better than 99.9% of footballers in history.
Both all time greats. Seedord won an insane amount of trophies. Gerrard's had a special significance. Gerrard was a hometown hero. But Seedorf was never going to stay at Ajax. Amazing that he won the CL with Ajax, in the relatively modern era, granted it was an all time squad stacked with talent.
Gerrard's & Liverpool's Miracle in Istanbul is of course one of the greatest European/CL trophies in the history of the game.

Zinedine Zidane called Gerrard the best player in the world in 2009.
Paul Scholes in a recent interview said that "he couldn't do what Gerrard did at Liverpool."
Fernando Torres is adamant that Stevie is the best player he ever played with, and his favorite.
Jose Mourinho tried to sign Gerrard at 3 different clubs: Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid. He even wrote Gerrard a letter saying how much he admired him and wanted to coach him.
Alex Ferguson, despite telling the press a different story, also tried to sign Gerrard as a replacement for Roy Keane.
