Sorry to hear that. You are right, there has to be the right combination of factors to work well. I was able to get it to work with an aerial view of a city if I masked out the roadways/sidewalks with a sharp enough feathering like I did isolating the roadway in the video example.
Also, a second note: You may have to change the "Displace Property" to something like "brightness" to get a distinct look between streets and buildings. May also take a bit more manual work of masking out roadways, yards, and sidewalks that you don't want to be extruded. I can post an example in the "community" tab later if you want to see an example with a city.

i tried to do this with a city but it really didnt look great. I think it only works with certain images
