Two factor : Usually, mainstream is only mainstream in one country (exept american songs that are, fore some reason, mainstream everywhere). So there is no Shivam Pathak (mainstrream in India) or Nach (mainstream in spain) in the mainstream of America, or, closer to me, France.
Second factor, mainstream music is mainstream because it appeal slightly to most people, instead of appeling strongly to a few. For example, ZTS uses influences from quite hard trance and "classical". Despite it's greatness for me, when I show it to hard trance fans (wich are quite rare), the find it to "soft" and a too strong melody compared to the accompaniement, compared to their usual hardcore trance. When I show it to classical fans, they dont like the beats and the overal electronic souds. When I try to show it to "regular" persons, the run and scream
An other example could be "Les VRP", a french group influenced with the "bal musette" style, with a touch of other genres. (some Yodel in one of them song, "La grosse papille", for example). The best part about them (and the most disturbing for mot peoples) is the heavy dose of humour in theyre song, especially about killing peoples
About the mili case, first it's Japanese, so the first factor comes into play. Second, it's a weird combination of electronic and acoustic sounds (weird in a good way for me, in a bad way for mainstream). Then most of there song are in english, so not everybody understand the lyrics (remember, this is a japanese group). They style is not very consistant, varying from song to song. They start to gain popularity in the electro comunity because of RTRT, but it drop because they changed style again. Camelia have a lot of Tango elements, but I doubt they will keep them for they following songs.
And most important, they talk a lot about death and/or sex with a cherfull melody. Peoples who likes happy song do not want thosses lirycs, peoples who likes violent ones do not want thoses melodyes.
Only weirdos like us likes Mili. But thats not an insult, it's the exact opposite. Every body got weird musical tastes, but they are not weird in the same sense for everybody. I personally dislike most cheerfull J-pop or most Rap musics. Does that mean that they are bad ? No. Mainstream is just somewhere in the middle. Something that few loves but few hates. I and most of my friends quite like mainstream music, but I know no one whose favorite music is mainstram. I have a friend who love traditional russian music, an other who love reagae, an other who loves J-core. Even though, those styles are not mainstreams. Mainstream is not what we love, it's what most accept without cringing
By the way, the examples that I cited all sound great, do not hesitate to check them
(PS : this comment is WAAAAAAAY longer than intended xD)
