In 1975 I was ground crew on BBMF, I had joined the RAF in 1970. I remember the grey flying suits well, now long gone but I still have and wear my flying jacket, originally green it was dyed Black, now slightly faded. 1975 was the year the Lightnings left RAF Coltishall, and the Jaguars moved in. By the late eighties I was working on those self same Hercules.
I signed up for Queen & Country in 1976 a boy entrant apprentice at RAF Halton. THIS is my era. Back then 108,000 staff - today - 30,000😮 My first posting was Brize working on the last of the Belfasts and 7 years on the mighty Queen of The Skies the VC10 (when they were all painted the PROPER colours - not the awful 'sick grey') Happy Days
That guy saying that it was all about a radar and a linked missile system. Clearly the Americans in Vietnam had a different thought when they started putting gun pods on the F4
Does anyone recall an advert for RAF Aerial Erectors in the 1970's? The film consisted of a guy climbing a huge aerial with a crossbow on his back. Once at the top he fired the crossbow taking a line from one aerial tower to the next. Cannot seem to find a clip of this anywhere. Anyone remember or help?
I remember it, but I don't think it was an "advert" as such. I remember it as an "interlude" film, shown on the BBC in gaps between daytime programs - a bit like the earlier "potters wheel" , "Windmill" and "Kitten Playing". I think they had another one featuring the RAF Marine Branch Air-sea rescue boats. They'd be shown between the early Open University daytime programmes.
@@StephenWeatherley maybe because their main role was intercepting high altitude Russian bombers taking the mick with uk airspace. I bet the phantoms in Vietnam dogfighting small manoeuvrable migs was a different story, but I bet they didn’t have benefit of g suits either. But without a gun, maybe it was all longer range anyway.
@@visorcover He did a film about Gloster Meteors shooting down V1s that was just a crock of shite. I think I saw a second film of his that I could tear apart too. I don't know that much, so to be able to rubbish two of his videos means I don't bother watching him any more. Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles was also ticked off with him, and Greg is the most helpful and generous of content creators. It’s great at the end when they are all doing a piece to camera….they all have posh BBC voices…until u get to the phantom pilot, who says in a regional accent that he loves to fly upside down 😂😂😂
Love it, comradery to the vintage best. Unfortunately the RAF of new is far from this nostalgic propaganda.
It was shyte in the 1980's!
That’s the RAF I joined in 1970 and flew in for 19 years. In the days when we had an RAF. Today’s version is a pale shadow.
When we had a BIG air force

The Belfasts came back Heavy Lift when I was on the line @BZN! First School of TT is now for the recruits. The history has long gone!
I was a Halton apprentice also. Joined up in 1968 then went on to JPs Hunters and finally Vulcans.
“Personally I like flying upside down (inverted), which you can’t do in an airliner.”😆

I love the ending :)
Thanks.
I never knew Matt Le Blanc was squadron leader Collins
2:30 safety tags in place ???
Good pair of eyes! 😲
cos the flems didn't get a look in. Also they seem to have developed a way of fitting fletcher tanks inflght!
…and 1:47 checking BLC with no engines running 😂
did I see 'remove before flight' tags on the empty pylons as they taxied out
I’ve got a 19plate 3door best car I ever bought new still have 4.5 years later

Looking at those roundels
this has to be prior to 1973
Could well be, we only have the dates that the films were completed unfortunately 👍
@1808, Ken macallum if I'm not mistaken
I don't know what planet this lot are from !I demoted in 71 ,last job was repairing ex coastal command equipment circa 1943.

I flew fantons in 1875
Nothing but the best…
Bit different from 1966!
Flying suits with shirt and tie…
standards must be upheld :)
Sadly the MOD bought yank a/c! Another nail in the aviation indistries coffin!
I believe DR. Mark Felton used some of this footage on his video for the 1982 RAF Jaguar incident.
you mean bullshitter felton?
Mark Felon
@@jukeseyable Whats the downer with Mark Felton?

So I can see in hine sight where all the North Sea oil revenue was spent............ Empty treasury now.
Spent propping up thatchers govt!
Ha, nowadays the RAF can't wipe its own backside without the US supplying the toilet paper. Rule Britannia? Nope. LOL.
MCS Westinghouse Radar, a bag of nails to maintain….
@@josephlambe2796 Yeap, spent many a night chasing birdies and doing pack changes to come in on the next shift to do it all again 😖👍
