  • Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum: Southern #630 on the Missionary Ridge Local 3-13-14-2021.
It's already half way through March?
We took a trip back to Chattanooga Tennessee to see the recently repaired and repainted Southern Railway #630. A KS-1 Consolidation type built by the American Locomotive Company in 1904 for the Southern Railway.
630 would pull many freight trains on the Southern Railway Lake Toxaway and Murphy Branches in NC. After dieselization, 630 and sister engine 722 would move to the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad in 1952 as 207 and 208. In 1967, 630 and 722 were both traded back to Southern for their steam program. Both were donated to TVRM property in 1980. While 722 would operate till 1992 then go to dead storage at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, 630 was taken out of service and placed in storage at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. In 2011 630 came back to operation for the new Norfolk Southern 21st Century Steam Program. 630 would later be replaced by Southern 4501 so 630 was placed back to TVRM property. 630 continues to operate to this day hauling tourists on TVRM's Missionary Ridge Local.
After some extensive repairs over the course of 2020, 630 made the first trips on the Missionary Ridge Local on March 6th 2021. However, the locomotive has some different cosmetic features that are notable and noticeable.
    1. The cab roof was painted red instead of black.
    2. The whistle is a Virginia and Southwestern 3 chime. Not a Central of Georgia 6 chime.
