Your composure on that show was masterful. Personally I couldn’t have played it as cool as you did. I think you came off so well by being so calm and not trying to talk over her belittling and insulting you. She came off horribly. What a bully.

I asked backstage ‘what do I do if I can’t get a word in edgeways’ and they said in that case interrupt .. I tried lol

Well done on handling the TV interview so well.

I thought it was a disgusting display, honestly. You dealt with it so well but I would have been fuming. So disrespectful all round.

I am so pleased that you have posted this and I sincerely hope that the audience who watched the original GMTV ‘Debate’ (in the loosest sense of the word) also see this, including the presenters!
Perhaps I’m biased, but I have never been prouder than when sat in the middle of a huge crowd of Wet Wet Wet fans, Tony Hadley Fans, Texas Fans who are absolutely LOVING your supporting set and sing along, interact with you, queue up throughout the interval to buy your merchandise because they loved you so much!
There is a good old saying, ‘No publicity is bad publicity’ - well that is certainly true for you with this ‘debate’ - not so sure about your ‘opponent’!!!
You were beautifully eloquent, calm, polite, thoughtful and measured in your attempts to respond to the hostility you were dealt!
The first time I heard you play ‘The Hardest Goodbye’ live in Folkestone, I was sobbing along together with loads of Tony Hadley fans , men and women, they were listening to every word you sang and relating to it.
When I’m at one of your gigs all I want to do is listen to your songs, the words, the music, and yes I know most of the words and like to sing along, but only at a level which only I can hear.
Your personality shines through when you perform live, the chatting and banter is funny, slick, emotional, and that is what makes people love your shows and you!
    Don’t ever change ❤

This is like Facebook on steroids 😂. Your personality shines in this video. You were so calm and respectful. You modeled that to the audience and all that matters. That other woman was rude, jaded, and defensive. It’s very embarrassing actually.

Speaking as someone who has seen Lucy live three times (once as support at a “big show”, twice at Lucy’s own tours), I can VERY confidently say that she knows how to connect with her audience and make an intimate show feel so welcoming and comfortable. She’s relatable and interacts with the audience during the show, so no, it’s not a “shut up and listen to me sing” situation.
At the last show I went to (just after the GMB bull💩) I SOBBED my way through Floating in Space (Lucy gave me a hug during the interval and we talked about what the song meant to me), I laughed at the backstory behind Leftovers and the ‘edits’, shall we say, to Bad Day. I sang along, I answered her when she involved the audience, and I took my BeReal with her during her Q&A.
The comments that Lucy “doesn’t have the personality to command a room” etc are based on never having seeing her perform and making assumptions to argue a case. Her personality is what made me listen to more of her music and instantly buy tickets to her own tour literally on the way home the night I first saw her perform.
Clearly, as the length of this comment suggests, the treatment Lucy received on GMB bothered the HELL outta me, firstly ofc because it was rude and mean, but mainly because it was entirely untrue. She was genuinely only making sure her audience had a good time, which I absolutely did so thank you Lucy and please continue to call people out on their bs 😅🫶🏻

Well I got very concerned when you shouted the name I have on screen!!! I saw this live and it really made me mad. There are so many people like R who jump to conclusions and judge people harshly. Your composure was exemplary. Many would not have dome that!

I think the main thing important here is genre. If you’re playing music that’s loud then you can probably speak and sing and no one will really hear you. But having been to your acoustic tour much noise above background would be audible. Pretty much regardless of venue size.

I saw you play at Cottingham as support for Nerina Pallot and loved your music ever since. Your list of etiquette just made sense to any rational person that wants to see you and listen to the intricate lyrics of your beautiful songs. This woman plays to a completely different crowd and audience with her style of music and her attitude was horrendous. You came across as polite, rational and sane lol. Please carry on doing what you do, entertaining the folk that love your music and connecting with us all. Thank you x

    Well done Lucy!!
She’s totally the type that would be annoying at concerts isn’t she? 😂
Jokes aside, well done for standing up to her, you totally showed she is wrong about you not having the charisma and personality to stand up for yourself and what you believe in!
I so agree with you, as an audience member I have had times when I wanted to leave the gig because of people chatting loudly throughout the entire gig, once even standing in the front row!!How annoying that is for both the artists and the audience members!
And this gets even more annoying at small intimate gigs.
What a stupid argument “They pay they can do whatever they want” is.
The people who pay to see a show have the right to see a show! It’s about being respectful of performers and the rest of the audience!
Amazing job Lucy, I really enjoyed this!

The loud, interrupting one just doesn't get it and she's the kind of person that Lucy's gig etiquette was written for. She doesn't care what Lucy's point is, she just wants to connect with the TV audience and will do so no matter who she interrupts.

As a fellow folky singer-songwriter, I completely understand and agree with you. In certain genres, such as folk music, I think most of the magic is in the silence between the notes and words. If you don't have that canvas of silence to express your emotions and vulnerability on, it can be impossible to bring the room to that magical place during a gig.
You're amazing for how you handled this situation, how you managed to stay calm and composed despite such hostility! You're an inspiration. Thank you for sharing this and your music ❤

Sonny, I am so sorry for taking 5 months to read and respond to this... but I just wanted to say thank you so much for commenting. Completely agree with your words about folk music, and because of this comment I have now discovered your music ! Obsessed with your voice and you remind me of Nina Nesbitt who is one of my biggest inspirations. Looking forward to listening to more of your stuff and hopefully catch you IRL one day :) Keep being you x

I totally agree 100 percent with what you said Lucy that other woman’s Ego is out of control.
Who is she anyway and without being rude is she still relevant as she seems to think so.
She just didn’t have a clue about the difference in Gigs.
I go to all sort of venues from The O2 Greenwich and Hammersmith Odeon to The Green Note venues in pubs tiny rooms where you go to sit and listen to someone telling telling their stories vie songs which is Magical IMO.
In the past I used to travel to Hammersmith to go to a pub called the Distillers which has a small room upstairs and a free night called The Regal Room. This music was the same and the only thing that was asked was that you sat quietly, only spoke between songs, turn your phone off and go outside if you wanted to use it or talk.
Simple rules that showed respect for the artist.
You could buy drinks at the bar.
The same people had a night at a pub in I think Balham called The Bedford same arraignment and as like minded people we all enjoyed ourselves 😋
I saw the likes of an early James Blunt, Elle Goulding, Ed Sheeran and Jamie Lawson.
But I Love seeing the likes of Nick Cave, Tears For Fears etc.
Please keep doing what you do best Lucy and hopefully it will be a springboard to bigger things for you, I hope so 😋♥️

Context is SO important in this situation! When I was watching this live, I was fuming, the styles of music and the size of the venues are completely different. I didn’t like the personal comments R was making and perhaps looking back, that's why the videos were taken down. It wasn't nice that L couldn't get a word in but Lucy hasn't been on the earth for 40 years so I'm still wondering how she'd have the chance to have performed all those decades live 😂 Lucy, you did a great job!!!!!

Big ups to you mate for showing this whole interview it's absolutely bonkers! I find it quite pathetic really the other artist we have in this interview is properly having a go and part of her argument really is just boasting how long she's been in the business for and the venues she's played etc. and basically thinks she's better, I bet if the roles were reversed and she sang on her own with an acoustic guitar she'd have guidelines after her first gig, well done for this mate much respect you held a good argument and kept your cool, much love ❤ 🤘🏻

She is good it's just people get drunk and start talking or just get caught up in chatting and maybe don't realise the artist has started, sometimes people are in there own world. It's good to have a set of guidelines and no one who went minded following them.
