7:40 It's worth noting that the flip is a *may* ability, which means that you can have the land portion in play and then also play another Search for Azcanta and just keep it unflipped, giving you the benefit of *both* sides of the card.
Ahhhh, Search for Azcanta. Back in Ixalan Standard, it was the most sought after card at Rare and just imagine my delight when one pack I bought on a whim had it as the rare AND as a foil to boot!
Ahhh Blue Lands. AKA Tolarian Academy the list. BTW, since it has 122 points in Vintage, you have no excuse not to do "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!
No idea if you've done this, but top 10 cycles would be really interesting I think. It would probably be determined by the cycles with the highest number of average points per card in the cycle.
(0:00) I completely missed guessing and watching this one. Off the top of my head I guess these will make the list, Tolarian Academy, Academy Ruins, Seat of Synod, Faerie Conclave, Cephalid Colosseum [Edit, spelled correctly though], Tolaria West, Castle Vantress, Mystic Sanctuary, Oboro Palace in the Clouds, Minamo School at Waters Edge
Having been in standard for only seven months so far and already having half the points it took Tolarian Academy twenty years to get, I think Castle Vantress will surpass it very easily unless it suddenly stops seeing play.
Wow, after watching the video I whiffed this call big time. I guess I underestimated the importance of standard viability. Still, sanctuary is everywhere in modern and I assume will make it on here eventually.
@@rattlesnek3847 Yeah, I was surprised that Sanctuary didn't rate at all, since it's also played in blue legacy decks like delver. We'll probably see it here in a year or two.
@@chuckwagon3718 It's not played in Legacy Delver because lands that come into play tapped are no good in a tempo deck. Some of the Yorion decks are playing Sanctuary but it's not as important in Legacy because decks don't play Cryptic Command and they have 8 Cantrips to ensure card velocity, so it's not as important of an effect.
Also, highly doubt that Castle Vantress can't catch Tolarian Academy. While Academy is certainly the more powerful land, Vantress is available in more places. It is seeing play in Modern and Pioneer, which gives it a boost over Academy.
Entry 4 the land side could also kinda help with miracles in two ways. Dig for another deck stacker. Or if you see the miracle on top, you don’t choose to put a card into your hand and leave the order as is.
Do you have a video on top multicolored lands? Like a whole series for each color pairing seems like a bit much, but top 10 in any combination of colors
Most know how busted Tolarian Academy is, but for those who don't, this should be a sign. The Academy is only legal in Vintage, where its restricted. And yet despite that, it has a firm hold on the number 1 slot. Just let that sink in.
Yeah, Tolarian Academy is definitely one of if not the most broken land(s) ever created. Imagine if this wasn't restricted and you combined it with Mirror Gallery? Infinity Mana x4 lol
Also Nizzahon, do you have any plans of snagging the Secret Lair for Ornithological Studies? Just happened to remember your penchant for bird-watching when I saw that Secret Lair 😀
I am wondering where mystic sanctuary stands. I know it seeing play in pioneer, modern and standard at a lesser rate then the castle, but I am curious if it getting close to being on this list.
See I thought academy would not be first because it was banned in standard, block, extended, and legacy. I also severely underestimated how much 20 years of vintage play would bump that score up.
This color cycle seems to be coming to an end. I came to think that could actually make lands colored? If I use a card like Distorting Lens, can I turn an Island into a Blue Permanent?
Azcanta could have had the first part as normal, then used Threshold, since that's what the keyword requires. Although, I get the feeling it would have been too good and broken the symmetry with the others in the cycle.
@@NizzahonMagic There just haven't been any modern PT:s after it was printed, and there are arena tournaments all the time which is why castle vantress could easily take the number one spot, because it still has 1,5 years left in standard

I think nizzahon is not doing it jist to taunt you at this point

wait for the blue land with a counterspell atttached
pha1te randolph thats just mystic sanctuary
How about a blue land that will give you an extra turn?!? 😊

You forgot island as the #1
Academy 1st place, no questions asked. Future contender as years go by could be Sanctuary though.
This very list has 3 other cards that directly reference Tolarian Academy. That’s pretty GOAT
I mean, maybe in decades
Sanctuary is so good because it’s fetch-able. It should see more points in non rotating formats in the future.
Are you going to do similar series based on the guild pairings, shards or wedges?
It would be an interesting look at how Magic has evolved.
I codimagine sanctuary passing academy (i wrote the comment before watching)
Can we take a moment to respect how well designed the flip lands in ixalan were, every single one were in these lists and none are too overly powerful
The Red and Green ones did not make their lists
Nizzahon Magic rip me

After watching these videos, I realized that Volrath's Stronghold, Academy Ruins, and Hall of Heliods Generosity are a cycle.
Having been in standard for only seven months so far and already having half the points it took Tolarian Academy twenty years to get, I think Castle Vantress will surpass it very easily unless it suddenly stops seeing play.
What do we think lads: will mystic sanctuary ever pass tolarian academy?

@9:26 Yawgmoth's Stronghold?
Sounds like a mistake. He probably meant Volrath's Stronghold. Although, now I want a card with the name Yawgmoth's Stronghold.
Or Urborg
Mystic Sanctuary + Cryptic Command
Mystic Sanctuary + Time Warp + Meloku
Fetchland + Mystic Sanctuary
Mutavault/Cavern of souls + Oboro Palace in the clouds
Search for Azcanta was my Ixalan pre-release promo. Teferi was my Dominaria promo. And I don't even play control lol.

Nizzahon, you're the man. Thanks for all these videos.

Kind of. I did a video on lands that add mana of any color.
@@NizzahonMagic top 10 multicolored land types sounds like something you'd do
Thanks a bunch! VERY Helpful vid. Appreciate it.
rip Oboro and Minamo

I feel like I said all of that in the video haha
I am actually kinda curious to see a top 5 basic lands just to see which color has racked up the most points.
I would have expected minamo to be on the list.
Well, I guess I'm just too much of an EDH player to know what competitive means
So was i 😂
the artifact lands are what make affinity. I don't know if pauper affinity would exist without them.
I haven't played Magic since Urza's Saga and even I knew Academy would be #1
Having the ability to tap for blue mana makes almost anything playable.
I figured Castle Vantress would be here, but dang that spot was unexpected. Granted, I only use it in my edh deck so...

Top 10 Banding!
I don’t think any banding cards have any points but I could be wrong
Faerie Conclave is from Urza’s Legacy, not Destiny.
called it! search for azcanta on a high spot! not that it was a surprise at all but i caled it!
are you considering doing this to Color Pairs?
And at number 0, Tolarian Community College
wow I can't believe Faerie conclave actually made the list.
Tolarian: Just like blue, very unfair. :^)
I am wondering where mystic sanctuary stands. I know it seeing play in pioneer, modern and standard at a lesser rate then the castle, but I am curious if it getting close to being on this list.
Blue lands can get pretty lonely.
See I thought academy would not be first because it was banned in standard, block, extended, and legacy. I also severely underestimated how much 20 years of vintage play would bump that score up.
Will we see multicolored versions of this list too? Cards like Moorland Haunt, Desolate Lighthouse, Sunhome, and such.
Perhaps.
All I've got is Halimar Depths. Need to buy me a Castle Vantress and a Faerie Conclave next time I get cards online.
Mystic sanctuary. Two bucks for a playset, and they should be worth way more.
Where would mystic sanctuary be on the list?
Not on the list, but I have a fondness for Soldevi Excavations from Alliances.
This color cycle seems to be coming to an end. I came to think that could actually make lands colored? If I use a card like Distorting Lens, can I turn an Island into a Blue Permanent?
Yes, and also cards like painter's servant
Azcanta could have had the first part as normal, then used Threshold, since that's what the keyword requires. Although, I get the feeling it would have been too good and broken the symmetry with the others in the cycle.
The first part can be renamed to Surveil 1 now :p
Im curious the mtg top 11 basic lands now (reg basics, snow basics, and wastes)
I have a weird feeling Wastes arent really crushing the list lmao
Can you do a top 10 common cards please?
Might aswell do another color cycle and spread it across 5 videos. Might help players making budget or pauper decks ;)
I put Faerie Conclave in a shitload of decks, that's for sure.
Azcanta is my guess for 4.
It might be a lot of work, but a top 10 dual/tri land cycles could be fun.
lol, but how many points did "Tolaria" have? :D
It's got to be the Tolarian Academy, like what else could it be? Unless it getting banned hurts its numbers.

I mean well yeah.
Before we begin, gonna guess Tolarian Academy for n1
Why am I not surprised?
