  • Elmo's in a library of magic books! He is your child's friend and companion as they explore the books in the library and learn the reading basics. Each book in the library leads to a scene where one of the Sesame Street Muppets welcomes you into a reading activity. Whether your child wants to practice rhyming with Zoe in the poetry book or cook up some words with Cookie Monster in the recipe book, Elmo will always be there--providing encouragement and help when needed. Six activities built into six adventure books reinforce letter-sound recognition, word-object relationships, word building, consonant blends, rhyming and speech-print relationships.
Elmo's Reading Basics is a Sesame Street CD-ROM game for home computers. The game was developed by Creative Wonders and Children's Television Workshop in 1998 and later re-released by Encore Software and Sesame Workshop in 2006. Elmo presents 6 reading games at three different levels. Concepts introduced include letters, words, and sentences. This game was included in the Elmo's Reading: Preschool and Kindergarten CD-ROM 2-disc set in 1998, along with Elmo Through the Looking-Glass.

    Away-from-Computer Activities
Here are a few games to play using letters. First, you'll need some letters. Use any letters you have around the house, such as refrigerator magnets or board game pieces. Or, make a set of letters (in upper and lower case) with construction paper, cardboard, scissors, glue and markers. Use clear contact paper to preserve and keep your letters long-lasting. Next, make word groups for your child to play with and make words. Create endings such as
    -UN for sun, run, bun,
    -ET for wet, net, bet,
    -IN for win, fin, pin,
    -AKE for cake, rake, lake,
    -OCK for sock, rock, lock,
    -OOK for book, hook, cook,
    -ATE for crate, plate, skate,
-OG for frog, smog, log , and
    -ANE for crane, plane, cane.
Look for pictures in magazines to match some of the words you create as well. Have fun!
This game was part of the Sesame Workshop: Get Set to Read Deluxe Collection.
