  • Yamaha’s YC 61 feels a bit like a logical extension of the Reface range, which when first released wasn’t all that well received but as time has passed have become more and more popular - a slow burner for sure.
    The YC 61 starts with a performance based Organ emulation (hence the YC) which uses a new VCM Organ Engine with physical drawbars. VCM stands for Virtual Circuit Modeling - technology developed by Toshi Kunimoto AKA Dr “K” , also responsible for the VP and VL instruments and Digital Consoles..
    But there’s also a dedicated piano section with acoustic and electric pianos, plus a synth section too. Designed as a stage performance instrument together with interactive FX, Rotary, drive, reverb it's a very hands on instrument which is a nod to the Reface philosophy.
    In terms of functionality, it's going up against the Nord Stage 3 and as such has a waterfall keybed - making it suited to organ playing techniques, but the added sections giving a much wider range of sounds.
    Our Sounds Only demo is handled by Jim Heywood aka @earmonkey_music and takes into some unexpected sonic territories.
    Yamaha YC 61 is available now priced at around £1500/$1999

I really appreciate its inherent versatility and musicality; looks like it can handle a lot of situations (also appreciated the Pink Floyd-like textures you have a few minutes into the video).

    I think the refaces are more popular now as they are priced at a better level, and the pure CS-80 trolling of the teaser campaign has worn off a little... however we now have big boy versions of the YC, CP and DX (MODX/Montage).... the big boy CS might be fun

      I haven't seen a price drop in the Refaces unfortunately. In Europe they're still all more than 300 Euro. I think they should be well under 300 if you compare them w/ their Korg competitors. Having said that, I'm very impressed w/ my Hammond clone Reface. I can even find a sweet spot for its horrible distortion effect, ha ha. ;)

    One of the main reasons the refaces were not popular was the price. It’s a competitive market. If they lower the price they will probably sell enough to make a serious profit. It’s a pandemic and unfortunately high end equipment that is perceived to be overpriced will be put on the backburner as a non necessity for the next year or so.
    P.S. I own two refaces, they are fantastic

  • @murve33

    I love Yamaha, but I think the main problem with the YC 61 is that for the same price you could buy a Hammond Sk-1 or a Crumar Mojo; two keyboards that are masters of organ and keyboard simulation (no one is buying this for the strings patches, right?)
    This does have FM features, which are pretty enticing, especially given that there hasn't been an easy to control FM synth. But, from what I can tell, the depth available doesn't come remotely close to what can be done on Reface DX or a TX81Z.
    Did I miss something? I really do want to like it. Organ, EP, and FM are what I most want out of a keyboard, but I couldn't see myself dropping more than $900 it.

      May be two years old of a comment but, most people complain about the piano and keys sounds on the SK-1 not cutting it like a Nord or this does. However, there's no real argument from ORGAN players that the Hammond SK-1 and SK series is pretty much the top of the line for pure Organ tones and a leslie sim.

    • @mmhcreates
      @mmhcreates 3 роки тому +1

      @@sonicstate Regarding MPE and Organ/Piano functionality. Presumably the other parameters such as vibrato and draw bar manipulation (for Organ) could be manipulated using the extra articulation techniques provided by MPE such as sliding and wiggling the 'keys' on a Seaboard and or expressive E osmose. Perhaps fx such as delay and reverb could be triggered on or off by sliding up on a key or that same 'Slide' could introduce a cello or synth into the mix, making the piano less piano'y but more versatile.

    • @SandcastleTheory
      @SandcastleTheory 3 роки тому +1

      @@sonicstate I play EP and organ sounds using my LinnStrument all the time. You don't have to use MPE for those sounds, and the LinnStrument can easily be configured to switch between MPE and one-channel mode with the press of a button. The LinnStrument can also be configured to send custom CC messages from each of its axes; to which end, there are certainly parameters worth changing with expressive control, even when using piano and organ sounds. In Bitwig, for instance, I can vibrato individual notes on a piano, modulate individual notes on an organ, etc. That said, there is also a synth engine in the YC, so... MPE aside, however, I'd still prefer a YC module, if only so I can use my own controller. Cheers!
