no, I don't think the v20 look good at all. No one will ask me "wow, what kind of phone is that?" I get that all the time with my V10 and it looks great even with the plastic. I preferred 10 over the 20, hands down. I don't think any v10 users are going to switch to the v20.
it's not really about the height, it's about the amount of force. I've dropped my phone by knocking it off the table, I then grabbed at it on the way down and it just accelerated it into the floor when I failed to get a good grip on it ... result was a nice solid crack from left center to top right. It was only about a 1.2m drop but yeah, comes down to force. (Still using the phone though, GG3 is some tough stuff!)
i just dropped this phone 2 days ago from head height.... slipped out of my fingers...... i thought it was gone... not even a scratch... not a dent nothing!! Nada ZILCH....!!! yet my wifes S7 Edge... dropped from knee height....... gone.... the screens busted...... the LG V20 is ridiculously strong
That breaking apart is one of the reasons the phone survives any drops. The loads get minimalized for each part that separates which lowers the G-forces on each part.
You would have to be on a ladder to drop it from that height or a tree. I'm sure we could accomplish a bizarre drop like that but unlikely. Lol! Unrealistic drop in my opinion. I'm sure they dropped that phone more than several times as well.
the settings and notifications on the V20 are basically stock android so whats your problem with them? I'm not sure I understand your issue with the software.
I am using lg v10 and I have to agree that there are some software problems in it but the good thing is that its android so you can install 3rd party apps and fix those issues.
absolutely mind blowing that I just mentioned the drop test videos when we met at the Lenovo Press Conference and now you already made one ^^ Keep up the great work!
Correction. "It's just inoperable when it comes to the touch screen." Yet he presses the button and the touch screen responds and works still. at 8:16. The screen still works, the glass is just shattered.
Well, it's the laws of physics. If something on the phone breaks off, it takes some of the impact energy AWAY from the source, which would be the phone. That's the same concept applied to race cars. The crashes are shocking to some people because so many parts break off the car. This diverts the impact energy away from the driver. I used to own a Nokia and have dropped it three times (all accidentally of course!) and it always came apart. But it still worked like new after almost three years of HARD use. If this phone breaks apart that easily, that's good because it reduces the chances of the screen shattering.
honestly the lcd not shattering and just the glass on top is great at how far you dropped it. plus throwing a tempered glass screen protector and a case that phone is gonna be solid
My phone has far better hand feel when it doesn't have a case on it(HTC 10), but I'm not risking it falling and breaking, though I've had 5 smartphones in my life and not a single one has ever broken so maybe I'm overthinking things.
+Im No Chef Natasha yes because making sure your 800 dollar device doesn't get broken while you're going about your life running around and using it is objectively more important than aesthetics
love the way you cover each and every aspects of the product to give a perfect idea about the hardware as well as software and so this video helped me made my choice to end at LG V20.
LG V20 went through the drop tests pretty well. Yet there were a few reports on the camera glass lens in the rear cracking easily. Wonder if it's some faulty units and not the norm?
I would agree with a statement he made regarding shock absorption, even though he took the phone back popping off as a negative. Much like the crumple zone of a car and bicycle helmets that are designed to shatter on impact, the phone coming apart with each fall is actually a protective feature (whether or not it's intended). The impact energy is dissipated into the parts of the phone and weak areas that are designed to separate, rather than having nowhere to go leading to internal damage and cracks. Obviously there are limits regarding drop heights and force, but for normal drops, the back and battery popping off is not something to be bummed about. In my experience I've found that my phones sustained the most damage in falls where they stayed intact.
The building is called "Reichstag", "Bundestag" is the name of the parliament. So, if you were doing the drop test in front of the Bundestag, you'd be doing it in front of a bunch of politicians
lmfaooooooo "military grade aluminum!" *self-destructs when dropped from 4 feet* lmao I know its because of the backing, but that was kind of hilarious.
I just got a V20 today and I'll have to admit, I'm quite impressed. The most durable phone I've had so far was the Lumia 640, and I'm pretty sure this is going to replace this. It feels quite solid, and according to this drop test it is quite solid.
It did really well and I do think blowing apart helps it absorb a lot more shock than most phones, kinda like how carbon fiber race cars absorb shock by blowing apart on impact. Too bad it couldn't quite survive the screen drop from that high up but unless you throw it down the stairs it's kinda hard to get that far of a drop. I do wish they had been able to thin the side bezels down more though, this is going to be so much wider than a Note 7.
Please check your camera and see if the drop cracked the lens cover. Also check to see if the telephoto lens will focus. My LG V20 fell out of my pocket (2-3 feet) with a case. The lens cover cracked. I removed it but the telephoto lens will no longer focus. I have read about others having this issue.
the phone did great , not more than expected unlike many other categories where it seemed outstanding. any way ..... do a bend test with the same unit only because I want to know if the back cover is gonna make any sounds like most phones with removable backs
I really wish they went for a more robust locking system for the back plate. A single lock point seems a bit weak for a phone touted to be very durable.
The V10 I'm using now, took a 8 foot drop onto gravel, did a number to the screen, but the phone is still fully functional. I just added a screen protector to avoid more spidering of the glass. Saving up for the V20, otherwise it would be perfectly viable to replace the glass. My old Samsung would've cracked the display from that height onto gravel.
I'm a Samsung "fanboy", and I had a few Samsung phones I liked a lot, including my current Note 4, but the LG V20 looks like my next phone. :)) Never had to replace the battery, but always good to know that I could if I would. :)) Nice test, thanks for it!
Those 2 metal rims at the top and bottom prevent the glass from extending to the corners, I bet this was a conscious design decision from LG to make the phone more durable.
Wow that is amazing! That means that with a good case that phone will hardly ever break on you (especially if the case does a good job of also protecting the screen)
Good durability and brave first video. The last test was highly unnecessary as 3ft, 4ft, 5ft and even 5.5ft would have been the norm of maximum drop expected. I would much prefer a 5.5ft drop then the 6ft followed by 6.5ft one. But at least it's much more durable than the Note7 which is glass all round. Perhaps if LGV20 had added a tad of rubber on the perimeter edging it could have absorbed the shock in almost all instances. The removable battery and IR blaster give it an edge over Note7. Can you please do a battery and camera test Vs Note7.
I just bought one now, it's 400USD with the B&O headphones. My cousin has a G6 and I don't like it, miss the "old tech" like radio or IR blaster or even removable battery...
yea the v10 was supposed to be mil spec drop proof yet I managed to crack 2 v10 screens from hip height. Had the bootloader issues a month ago which was covered under warranty, but I want be getting another LG
The back popping off every time you drop it must be a bit annoying. However, the phone did good, overall. All things considered, the LG V20 is one of the best phones out there. It's feature packed and its looks grow on you after a while. I'd definitely buy one one of these.
You said yourself, everyone knows that the screen will shatter when dropped on its face from sufficient height. So why do it? Kinda seems like you're destroying the device just for the sake of destroying it. Just a thought
well...maybe you're not getting much damage because you're dropping it onto a smooth stone... Wonder if you'd get the same results dropping it on a street or more rough/jagged rocks...
I think when a phone breaks apart it ends up being a good thing. I can imagine it as a dispersion of impact force. Which something like the Note7 just condenses and ends up releasing as immediate cracks.
Hmmm I've been using a case for all my phones since the HTC dream. Not worried about drop tests so much. What does concern me about my phones is weather resistant. I've had two phones that fell into water, lg g2 and a galaxy s2. Both didn't work after, so weather resistant is 1st for me. Until lg does that, I can't see myself buying a lg phone. Removable battery has never been a big priority for me.
Wow what a strong phone! First phone I have seen that actually stays in tact. Totally worth getting even a refurbed phone like I am. You can easily replace the back cover and battery. This is why I don't purchase a phone new so if the screen cracks I just get a new glass cover.
sometimes it;s a matter of luck but some devices are really tough. i remember I did a very extreme test on my Samsung NX10 minorless camera and dropped it from third floor. and it came right back on. some scratches but nothing major. It was incredible. What a shame Samsung left the camera scene.
Ouch, that final test... my Z3 went down the same way, but from a way lower height... little more than a meter high. Only my touchscreen wouldn't work anymore, pretty impressive that the V20 still had touchscreen there with the screen cracked like that. The thing about smartphones falling on their faces is that you can always expect damage when it falls flat and neatly like that. xD You can still have a bit of hope if it bounces around a bit, but when it falls completely flat, it's done. :P
why would you drop it flat? How often does that even happen!! The phone screen has NOTHING to do with "military grade". Other video, under 2 feet drop on corner, and its cracked.
What is it made of? Gorilla 4 or 5? I would put this phone in a Speck candy-shell type case which would handle the battery case and most of the screen issues. Probably ballistic if its not GG 5.
how come they drop it from 6-12ft and nothing happens but when i drop it from like 3ft the whole thing cracks, lcd messes up or the whole thing just stops working
+Ludwin V I meant to say clicky like as in tactile. I had a G5 and the buttons were pretty mushy if the V20 has buttons like the galaxy phones that would be awesome
This is a phone you don't want to recommend for any one with any heart condition ... The first time an user drops this phone by accident he/she will cry instantly ! This video was really scaring to watch !
It was designed to have the battery pop out during a drop. That way it disperses the force. It has a mechanism that makes it do this all the time
Anyone else thinks the V20 looks SUPER GOOD??
i agree honestly.
i think the v10 looks better
I agree. I didn't really like the look of the V10, the plastic just looked kind of tacky.
no, I don't think the v20 look good at all. No one will ask me "wow, what kind of phone is that?" I get that all the time with my V10 and it looks great even with the plastic. I preferred 10 over the 20, hands down. I don't think any v10 users are going to switch to the v20.
Exactly ! rob blac
At that height, you can't really blame the phone for cracking. I'm impressed.
wow same impressed!
I think so too! And I think V20 doesn't need protecting case in usual living and situation👍
exactly. especially after 5 drops, on solid rock.
true
Military grade
and of course, NOBODY drops their phone from 10 feet.
Agree with you bro..
it's not really about the height, it's about the amount of force.
Daniel R my s7 edge screen would've broke on the first front facing drop.
Contractors do
Tall people
i just dropped this phone 2 days ago from head height.... slipped out of my fingers...... i thought it was gone... not even a scratch... not a dent nothing!! Nada ZILCH....!!! yet my wifes S7 Edge... dropped from knee height....... gone.... the screens busted...... the LG V20 is ridiculously strong
Dude i know right, i dropped it from 6-6'5" feet and it landed on the corner, i watched it explode and was so scared, but it turned out to be fine
Dude I just dropped mine face down on rough asphalt and not a single scratch!! Surprised the hell out of me
I dropped my V20 about 20-30 times in 2 years. And screen is still fine. No scratch.
So, um its not truck proof, lmfao my v20 got ran over, back cover is gone. Screen is shattered but the phone still works!!
@@ashleymurphy1485 that's shows how the motherboard and internals are still saved from more than 5 tons
I've missed the days of a phone falling apart it's fun to see again
That breaking apart is one of the reasons the phone survives any drops. The loads get minimalized for each part that separates which lowers the G-forces on each part.
RotaryPerfection yeah ik hahaha
+RotaryPerfection Are you a Mazda fan?
+09Mrsubaru Yes but more so a rotary diehard fan. :)
RotaryPerfection Hopefully we'll see the next gen next year.
drop proof> water resistance.
Already a drop test?! show some mercy! lol
Loooool
Do you know that phones dropped and bended way before final presentation?
yassssss they could have gave it to me waab
You would have to be on a ladder to drop it from that height or a tree. I'm sure we could accomplish a bizarre drop like that but unlikely. Lol!
Unrealistic drop in my opinion. I'm sure they dropped that phone more than several times as well.
LG finally did it! Wonderful design, High practicality, Good durability! I don't know Its UX and Display is good or bad, yet. but i wanna buy it.
LG V10 is criminally underrated.
yes it is...can't wait for V20
it is though that power button sucked broke 2 of them in about 7 months or so
other than the someone what common bootloop issues, it's imo the best multimedia phone.
Just finished getting mine back from repair. Got stuck in the boot loop, however other than that the phone is alright.
+Alpha Paradoxium what is boot loop ?i havent had any bootloop issues with mine
So it's not made for twelve foot drop tests. Great phone! It's first on my list as an upgrade to my LG G3!
First on my list (I also have the LG G3) is the OnePlus 3.
Yep! I'm definitely getting it when it comes out!
+Darryl “Happy Metalhead” Woodbury
Oneplus 3 is out already, mine was dispatched yesterday so what are you waiting for?
Daniel Daniel I'm getting the V20, not the OnePlus 3.
Wow, i though i was the only one with the G3 from 2 years ago. Do you have kids?
i loved how solid it sounded when it hit the ground, and that metal clank of the back cover was cool!
If LG could just get the software right, this phone would be as close to perfect as humanly possible.
+Angelbob77 Nova won't fix everything. You still have to deal with the settings and notification overlay.
+Angelbob77 I use the settings at least twice a day.
root and Nova launcher will fix everything software side
the settings and notifications on the V20 are basically stock android so whats your problem with them? I'm not sure I understand your issue with the software.
I am using lg v10 and I have to agree that there are some software problems in it but the good thing is that its android so you can install 3rd party apps and fix those issues.
my s7 edge screen would've been toast!
moto z force
Ricq nice phone, but not as nice as the v20. Imho.
+Darrin Thorpe the v20 is really ugly
Jose Barajas on what planet is that exactly? It's a beautiful phone.
+Darrin Thorpe it looks like a blackberry Z30 bro
But who really drops their phone at 3 meters.
Germans?
lol
construction workers
actually he killed nobody
only himself
absolutely mind blowing that I just mentioned the drop test videos when we met at the Lenovo Press Conference and now you already made one ^^
Keep up the great work!
I never drop phones, but the V20 is so slippery I dropped it a couple times. Still no damage! Very well built!
And that kids, is why you use a case on your phone and you don't drop your phone from great heights
Legend has it that the LG V20 is still recording video to this very day
Joshua's quality of video is really impressive nowadays. Thanks for the solid unbiased info!
Correction. "It's just inoperable when it comes to the touch screen." Yet he presses the button and the touch screen responds and works still. at 8:16. The screen still works, the glass is just shattered.
I'm beginning to think that nokia's scattering on impact is the secret to indiatructable phones!
immagine if there was a removable front plate. maybe it might have survived longer
yes the old nokias used to fly to bits , but went back together like a lego :).
It's not a secret that that disperse the shock
Well, it's the laws of physics. If something on the phone breaks off, it takes some of the impact energy AWAY from the source, which would be the phone. That's the same concept applied to race cars. Just bought another one today and very excited to have it back. Still an awesome phone getting Android Pie as well so still a long life to it.
Hi Everybody. I Hope you guys have an Amazing Day.
you too
Thanks bro
Thanks mate! Wish you all best!
Thank you ! Hope you had an amazing day yesterday and today and tomorrow :p
+Cock Waffle???
Does no one use a case anymore??
My phone has far better hand feel when it doesn't have a case on it(HTC 10), but I'm not risking it falling and breaking, though I've had 5 smartphones in my life and not a single one has ever broken so maybe I'm overthinking things.
cases just make the phone more chunky :(
+Im No Chef Natasha and safer.
Kyle Fleming we spend $800+ on a nice new phone only to cover it and hide the aesthetics that the designers spent years making..
+Im No Chef Natasha yes because making sure your 800 dollar device doesn't get broken while you're going about your life running around and using it is objectively more important than aesthetics

It's ironically so nice to see it split apart like that. It's been a while since that was a thing! Nostalgia :D!
excellent video! Have had my V20 for a few days now and of course I use a case. Good to see how well it holds up without though.

Not even 5 hours since the announcement, and they have a drop test. What a time to be alive!

getting a v20 for sure.

Great video, thank for this test!
The backing coming off is a good thing...Thats absorbing the shock.
Does the LG V20 have 2 layers of glass like the LG V10 had ?.... So when you crack the screen you can just scrape the top layer ?
3:45
drops phone face first on a smooth surface, surprised there's no cracks.
Good durability and brave first video. The last test was highly unnecessary as 3ft, 4ft, 5ft and even 5.5ft would have been the norm of maximum drop expected. I just bought one now, it's 400USD with the B&O headphones. My cousin has a G6 and I don't like it, miss the "old tech" like radio or IR blaster or even removable battery...
hello , can a dual sim variant of lg v20 will be available in final launch of the product in Indian market or in any market ??????
the side drop at 2.20 looked like synchronized divers as the phone and back casing broke apart and bounced together XD
yea the v10 was supposed to be mil spec drop proof yet I managed to crack 2 v10 screens from hip height.
Still rockin that Pebble Time I see
Will you be reviewing the P2/PT2, Joshua?
Surviving that many drops is all I could ever really ask for. That's about as many times as I've ever dropped all of my past phones combined.
another great phone that people won't but just like Htc 10
kinda curious, I know you guys get the phone from lg to review, bit do you have to send it back? or do you keep it for drop tests and future reference
You guys had this phone the whole time before the announcement? You guys holdin' out on us!
It took me a good year before any noticable damage became apparent.
I think a case from spigen can add up to be far more durable . plus this time it feels like real metal and scuffs on real metal r like battle scars.
Lg v20 or Huawei Mate 9? Which one will you choose and why? Please help.
Actually i do like the cover and battery pops out, means that some impact energy is deflected from the main unit.
You said yourself, everyone knows that the screen will shatter when dropped on its face from sufficient height. So why do it? Kinda seems like you're destroying the device just for the sake of destroying it.
Just a thought
How were you guys able to take a sample and do a drop test??? Are you not supposed to return the phone after doing the tests?
I am still waiting for my LG G3 to break, but unfortunately it is still alive. Didn't have chance to upgrade it yet.
it holds very well I'm impressed
You have have given me instead of breaking it. Everytime it dropped,I had a broken feeling.
well...maybe you're not getting much damage because you're dropping it onto a smooth stone... Wonder if you'd get the same results dropping it on a street or more rough/jagged rocks...
I think when a phone breaks apart it ends up being a good thing. I can imagine it as a dispersion of impact force. Which something like the Note7 just condenses and ends up releasing as immediate cracks.
The question should be. Did it catch on fire?
are you planning to the the drop test on Honor 8?
Just upgraded to lg, wanted to mix it up some. I missed the ir blaster too
Hmmm I've been using a case for all my phones since the HTC dream. Not worried about drop tests so much. What does concern me about my phones is weather resistant. I've had two phones that fell into water, lg g2 and a galaxy s2. Both didn't work after, so weather resistant is 1st for me. Until lg does that, I can't see myself buying a lg phone. This non-scientific test has made a believer out of me. I now own a V20 as of this weekend!
Thanks for this video.
"not gonna explode in my hand thankfully" had me dying 😂😂😂😂
"no damage to the battery, so it's not gonna blow up in my hand thankfully" - Joshua. Hahaha.
Wow what a strong phone! First phone I have seen that actually stays in tact. Totally worth getting even a refurbed phone like I am. You can easily replace the back cover and battery. This is why I don't purchase a phone new so if the screen cracks I just get a new glass cover.
Has the boot issue been fixed on V20 unlike the LG v10 and LG g4?
thinking to replace my g4 to v20 soooo much.. love how the metal back case clanging
could you please make an drop test comparison between tge lg g5 vs the lg v20
sometimes it;s a matter of luck but some devices are really tough. i remember I did a very extreme test on my Samsung NX10 minorless camera and dropped it from third floor. and it came right back on. some scratches but nothing major. It was incredible. What a shame Samsung left the camera scene.

Please do a water test on lg k10 i've been trying to see if there is one but i cant find at least one 😒
at least we can see that the phone has great durability from normal drops and it's respectable
I would like to know how click the buttons are especially the back release button
+Ludwin V I meant to say clicky like as in tactile. I had a G5 and the buttons were pretty mushy if the V20 has buttons like the galaxy phones that would be awesome
These tests always hurt my little heart.
are you no longer doing drop test on sony xperia phones?
It isn't about hight. If screen touches ground on its side, it would crack much easier. My phone cracked from 15 cm
This is a phone you don't want to recommend for any one with any heart condition ...
The first time an user drops this phone by accident he/she will cry instantly ! This video was really scaring to watch !
how come so many guys from this channel sound very similar?
I dropped my Galaxy Note 3 at least 50 times over 3 + years and it NEVER had a broken screen and it worked great.
