Great method, to make it better I would put in a microwave container with a loose lid, bacteria and viruses are killed by the heat (steam) in the microwave not the waves. So probably adding a bit of extra water would be a good idea to increase steam in the container.
Question for you. I bought some potting mix I want to sterilize. I do not want gnats or other critters. In the past all new mix I have bought has been contaminated. So returning and buying another isnt ideal. What do you do to readd micronutrients to your soil after sterilization? I worry I will kill all benificial nutrients.
Also do you try and limit the temp that the soil reaches to limit killing off good bacteria or the production of harmful chemicals that are released when it gets above 90°C / 194°F? Is it a concern or do you supplement and enrich the soil after heat treatment, it is something I'm looking into doing so I can use my home made compost indoors without having the bugs swarm my house and existing plants.
i dont know what temperature it reaches what i do is microwave it until it is really hot sorry I can't be more precise all i know is it works really well
I wanna ask if I should sterilized the composting soil before putting it in my potting mix?I saw huge of white hypoaspis miles in my composting soil that is why I am worried that this will destroy my plants in the future,I research that it was good to have it in soil for they helped a lot to decompose the organic materials but should I not remove them because they were huge already, when I dig out the composting bin,the crawl faster in my arms,I am afraid if it can crawl in my ears for they were very small and faster to crawl? Should I boil water and put it in the composting soil? Can hot water will kill them? What about the nutrients in that composting soil will still remains after I put hot boiling water in the soil? pls.help me what to do.thanx and keep safe always.
if you are worried about using it i would try and little bit and see how it works if everything is ok do the rest of it fingers crossed 🤞it works ok please let me know how you get on good luck 👍
It kills thing's that can get into your compost like slug and snails and any fungus that you don't want when starting seeds I hope this explains why I do this thanks for watching
@@TuberoseKisser you hit the nail on the head I have tried sterilising it in the oven but it takes to long just to do a little bit where the microwave gets it super hot super quick so 1 hour you can do quite a lot I have never had any problems with it and it makes such a difference compared to none sterilisid
Other sources suggest heating the soil in the microwave to a maximum temperature of 180 °F - 200 °F (80° - 90° Celsius). Microwave the soil for a moment, stop and check temperature with a thermometer. If it hasn't reached the maximum temperature yet continue to microwave. The duration of this process is dependent on the amount of soil you're sterilizing.
Can this method kill spore, bacteria, virus? Actually, I want to use this compost for reishi mashroom. But for the mashroom, compost should be sterilized.
i have do whit mushroom, whit very small bags it worked perfectly, just today a have made 7 more big bags, before i have made 6 big bag and just 1 have been contaminated (all shitake), today i have made winecap, blu oyser x 3, pink oyser x 3.. hope all go well, i use sawdust of beech tree, small bags 3 minute and 3 for each side, whit the big 4 and 4..
Yes it works as pasteurisation, but do in a container with a loose lid to maximise the steam and heat which is what kills the contaminants. But bare in mind what field capacity of the substrate is and if any water has evaporated off this will need to be added after. I would only do this method for spawn to substrate mix, not for inoculation, better to use sterilisation pressure cooker method.
When you said “wont be a minute” after pressing for several minutes made me chuckle
me.to.i have just watched it back

thanks for the advice its appreciated
Adding a lid would do the trick. killing every thing isn't the worse you only need what there made of, not what they do.
Looks like 2 gardener's wives watched this video. Haha happy growing.
lol
This seems like it could be used for substrate and casing layer for 🍄

No doubt the soil gets hot but getting it hot is what kills off the nasties.

Would this work with dry coco?
anything that you think would benefit from sterilising
That’s hilarious,, the way you put the dirty bowl in the sink with the other cutlery ,, jeepers ,, at least it’s clean dirt 😄
definitely lol
Would this also kill gnats and their eggs.
