I hunt mornings exclusively and have done so since 2014. First of all, morning hunting gives me more time with my spouse. Secondly, I am confident in knowing where the deer are located in the last hour or two before dawn. Third, I prefer hunting in the woods, as opposed to field edges. Fourth, I think more bucks are educated when you climb down from your stand, not knowing that the buck is just out of your view. Lastly, hunting in the morning gives me better tracking light and more time to process the deer when I shoot them. Great video - can't wait to hear your findings on morning v. evening hunting.
Deer eat on an average of five times a day, that's once every 4.75 hours (Average). That means before hunting season, they are pretty consistent on what time they're moving and eating. Once hunting season starts and the amount of pressure the deer experience, those times change, hence, that's why mature/smart deer go mostly nocturnal! The Rut is the X-Factor for Mature Buck Movement and it's a 24-hour chase and breed event. Pressure and timing are the main keys to hunting pre-rut deer, weather conditions and food availability are the constant factor in all hunting. BASICALLY, "Be In The Right Place At The Right Time" based on scouting and research!!!
In my experiences i'd have to say it's about even, morning/evening. I will say this also, The biggest racked bucks taken were in miserable weather rain hail sleet and snow. Cheers
I do the same thing with trail camera pictures. Helps me because I hunt mostly big woods with no ag, clearcuts, or powerlines. I'll leave 'em in there for a whole season and then it helps me decide whether it's a morning or evening spot.
This is a great question. I've been bowhunting for thirty years and, to be honest, I've never really hunted according to the moon phase. I just get out and hunt whenever the weather lets me. I hunt mostly in North Carolina and Virginia and I usually try to hunt in heavily wooded oak flats. I've killed deer at all sorts of hours, but when I really stop to think about it, the answer is morning. There's no doubt that I harvest more before 9:30 in the morn. than any other time of day. And I'm hunting the afternoon too. And it seems that most of my deer killed in the afternoon are just before dark near the end of legal shooting light. Typically in early season I'm trying to ambush deer as they are heading to feeding areas late in the afternoon. Definitely an interesting question
Boy, that’s quite a collection. I don’t know how you remember all that lol I have to say mornings are my favorite I just like being in the tree when the sun comes up but probably killed about the same amount of deer in the evening as I have in the morning
I live in western Ky and have killed 80% more in the mornings. I hunt the same amount of time in the mornings as the evenings. I always figured it was the type of habitat and terrain being the reason. I definitely know the moon phase has a lot to do with hunting and fishing.
You gonna have to build a bigger room or stop hunting! Lol that’s impressive. I enjoyed Yalls discussions on the Southern outdoorsman podcast from the expo! Great info. Keep up good content

Another great video as always. Sure do appreciate you taking the time to make something fitting to watch and that’s full of knowledge. I also work by myself a lot and tend to be thinking on how to improve things constantly. As I’m watching this video of you going through all your deer, with my little one she says daddy, is he at bass pro? Lol Said no honey, he’s even killed more deer than bass pro has lol.
Now that I'm 61 I like evenings more LOL....enjoy my sleep in the mornings.....BUT here in Georgia it's hot at the start of archery season, Sept 9, so might have to do more mornings at first. Plus the property I'm hunting this year there's only one road in so it's very hard to get in there in the mornings without notifying ever deer in the woods you are there.
That’s the same way I am, I love nothing more than being in the woods when the sun is coming up, but I’ve killed way more deer in the evening than the morning
I've only ever taken 2 midday & they were among my smallest. My biggest - both bucks & does - have always come in the evening. But that doesn't stop me from hoping for a biggun at sunrise!
Keep the videos coming hell I'm sure everybody would tune in just to hear the story of each buck. Good job Mr state to state backstraps on the plate 😆 seriously congrats bud
Personally, I do not hunt moon phases. To me, temperature & weather is the most consistent component of "deer movement." I have found the most consistent movement before & after fronts and any significant change or drop in temperature.
Wonderful video! I’d like to remember all mine (just a few) and I’d say most are mornings. This is surely inspiration to do more day hunts, even though my very smart wife is convinced it’s a waste of my time! 🤣 Honestly, she’s not been hunting in quite a while, but is still probably better a hunter than myself.
That last buck you talked about. Is that the buck you killed just right out behind your house few years back. I wanna say it had like 17 points or something.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I do wonder, how do you pack your meat out in the Alps backpack? Do you put the meat in plastic bags before placing in the backpack? Just wondering.
Mostly in the evening but I’ve definitely seen more mature deer midday and I think they get up after bedding and move around because heck they have to take potty time when it wakes them 👍✌🏻🇺🇸
I believe that most of my bucks would be 50 50 morning and evening with a few in the mid day. Of course, I have not killed near as many bucks as you have. lol.
Hello from north MS! Bow season, evenings by far but I do think mid day bow season, especially early bow season, is widely overlooked. Gun, I usually dont shoot anything but bucks and normally, that’s the rut. I think by and large, the kill times are pretty balanced. Time in the woods is your friend during this phase. Really interesting topic though Jeremy…not heard a whole lot of discussion on it.
Ive had a little better luck midday and evening but i love mornings also. Just curious Brother if you still log. I come from 5 generation logging family we shut it down in early 2000's when diesel got so high. I operate equipment for my hometown now.
@@doityourselfhunter9031 That's exactly what happened to us. I miss being in the woods with my family but definitely not the headaches. Thanks for answering Brother.
I am about 50-50 also between morning and evening, I can’t remember killing any in the middle of the day. But the biggest bucks that I’ve killed has been in the evening for the most part. I really enjoy your video's.
Last season, all my successful hunts were evening hunts. The previous season, I harvested one deer in the morning, and the rest were all taken in the evening. However, I hunt way more in the evening compared to the morning, so my numbers are biased toward evenings. I also prefer evenings, especially if I'm hunting a new spot. I scout on my way in and pick the right tree. I mostly hunt mornings during the rut and try to stay late.
Half and half for me… I hunt when I can and don’t pay any attention to moon phases, but I know it does effect their movement. Less daylight movement on full moons.
Personally, I feel like pressure on any particular property has the most effect on deer movement times. Early season and less pressured properties seem like mature deer show mid morning and evening time. High pressured properties seems like mid day and first light from still being on their feet from the night is when they show. Naturally the rut throws any hypothesis out the window.
I’m in central alabama, I’ve got 12 bucks killed in the afternoon, 2 mid day and 1 in the morning. Afternoons have always been the best for me. Seen some big deer in the mornings bow hunting, but have all been out of range.
I only started hunting as an adult (10 years ago). I’ve killed 5 in the evening, one mid day and last year shot my first morning buck. I wasn’t able to recover the morning buck. Seems harder to get in without getting busted in the mornings for me.
Haven't watched all the video yet but Def feel like It's half and half on the bucks morning and evening but with the exception of I know I've hunted mornings more then evening 10 fold I would say evenings statistically have yielded a higher percentage of killing bucks for me
As some others have said. For me the daylight movement depends on pressure. When i didnt hunt much on my mt property the deer moved well before dark. After i started being on the property more they only show right before dark. Early season the cams tell me they move much more during the day. Id assume the mature deer have only one experience with a guy in a tree or more scent being spread where it isnt other times a year and they move at night. During the rut they seem to run wild lol
I think many things play into the answer to this question. First that comes to mind is where you hunt as in food sources or bedding. If you’re hunting either or I think your success rates will depend on the place you’re hunting and how the deer are either feeding to or from. I can hunt mornings closer to bedding and have better success than I would hunting say a field and vice versa for the evenings. I do think hunting the travel corridors closer to bedding will pay off in mornings or evenings but most people I see usually hunt food in evenings and cover or travels paths in the mornings. And then there’s the unique places like I have here at my house where I have two stands on small food plots that are very successful in mornings or evenings. I think this is largely due to the location I sit to all the land around me. Moon phases, weather, pressure, and many other things play into this also as we all Know but in my experiences the wind direction plays a vital role in how mature bucks move around my place.
@@doityourselfhunter9031 I’ve hunted all my life and I have learned more the past 10 years than the other 30. I mainly like to hunt a food source in the evenings and travel areas in mornings coming off food. Your question on moon phases brings me to this, depending on where that moon is at will 100% determine where I hunt. If it’s a day where the deer won’t move much I will hunt close to a bedding area
I tend to kill more big bucks in the morning When the moon phase is right for morning hunts But I also hunt the transition between doe bedding and buck bedding As I like to catch the bucks weary on their feet coming back from chasing girls all night That is mostly pre rut And just when the rut starts to kick off I still like my midday hunts and evening hunts as well
Breaking it down by month; morning, midday and evening would be very interesting. I would like to see how many morning bucks were taken prior to the last week of October
BTW, in 345 kills, and relatively equal sits per AM/PM kills, they are BOTH productive times to sit. But in the South early season, evenings seem to fair better as deer generally head to cover where my stand is well before daylight. As temps cool, things change.
I would guess weather and temp patterns would make an impact. It would be cool to cross reference those numbers with hours spent hunting during those timeframes through the year
I always figured that they felt less pressured during mid-day due to most hunters either being in there in the morning or late in the evenings. @@doityourselfhunter9031
I have done extensive analysis on AM vs PM hunt success. You can only compare the totals when you compare equal sit/hunt numbers. In other words if you kill 20 deer in the morning and 20 deer in the evening over a 25 year span, but you hunted only 50 times in the evening but in the same time to kill your 20 morning deer you hunted 100 times, evenings are more productive!
I've shot very few bucks in the morning. Mid day and evenings have been much better to me. Wish i would have paid better attention to the moon phases over the years when i killed a buck.
When I do a follow up show. I will give you a website so you can go back and look at the moon, if you remember the date, year, and time you killed a certain deer.
I’ve always had better luck and killed more bucks from about 8:30-11. Most of my bucks I’ve shot in the evenings were from about 3-4. Never had much luck in the middle of the day, but the ones I have got midday were my biggest.
it depends on what the trail cameras show. I prefer midday, evening hunts. Seems to me that I am pushing deer when I enter in the morning. My hunts are mostly DIY hunts. I hunt public property if I am hunting am, I try to get into stand at least 3 hours before daylight, sit in the stand an nap lol.
i hunt all day. and i don't sit, i walk. i've killed the vast majority of my deer in the midday hours. while most guys have went back to camp for lunch and a snooze, i'm walking the woods and finding deer.
That is a very productive way to hunt. I used to hunt like that all the time, but it is very hard to film a hunt like that, so I have got away from hunting like that.Good Luck!
I'm a southern hunter, Louisiana so just like anywhere in the south cold weather is at a premium for us. I do believe that when it gets really cold, wich for us would be anything below 30 dgrees?, that evenings can be really good, especially early evening like 3:00 to 4:30. My numbers are pretty much 50/50 like yours but I will say that as I've gotten a little older I would much much rather kill one in the morning so I tend to hunt mornings a little harder, but that being said I love it when the nights are cold enough, I'll kill one in the evening and just gut him and let him hang overnight and skin him the next day. Matter of fact killed a buck last year on National Forest land that weighed 210 lbs, by myself getting him out and it was below freezing that night so I let him hang overnight.
My evening kills are generally around 4pm. The majority of them are 830-1000 My policy is to hunt every chance I get but I do prefer morning sits. I detest tracking and transporting game in the dark.
Depends on time of season...Early in season I try to avoid ams as it will blow em out of bed. I will kill em more in the evening at that time. During the pre rut mostly am kills and rut I kill them both am and pm. Honestly between working and my wife/kid, I just hunt when I can the best I can in terms of wind direction etc. If I can hunt after work in the pm, by all means Imma sit in the tree then. If I have time before work, I'll get up in the stand then.
I'm not sure where u are going with this, but I write down every deer that I shot(weapon, broadhead, date, day, etc). Then, I watched another hunter like you, and he said that he shot(or saw) most big bucks near the 1st quarter of moon phase. SOO, I looked at my info, and YES! My biggest bucks that I shot(or saw) were in+ around the 1st Q! WIERD. Now, I hunt eves 3-1 compared to morns, so I can't give u an accurate study on my part.
@@doityourselfhunter9031 Sure, buddy! Now, I just looked at my paperwork+ 70% were shot on Weds+Thurs; another 70% were shot in Oct+ Nov(here in SE Pa). It was about 50/50 between ground hunting in a 'spot', or walking to+ from my car, or just slowly exploring.
Ive killed pretty much the same in the morning as i have in the evening. I have kill some in the middle of the day usually during the rut or full moon.
Im in Arkansas and I kill more mature bucks in the evening during early season. All of Oct is typically better for me in the evening. Late Oct through Nov is pre-rut and rut here. I start to see a lot of good morning activity with mature bucks. I see them cruising ridges and getting a little farther away from their core bedding areas. Last year was insane for morning buck activity. Strangly my 5 biggest bucks killed over a 25yr period cam between Nov 12-Nov 17th only 1 of them was in the evening. With 2 of them on Nov 13th. My boss knows that there is a zero percent chance im going to be at work that week lol However, I dont hunt those days anymore that the rest, In fact I probably put in more time on Oct. simply bc I am so excited for season and have lots of areas scouted out.
I get there before light stay till dark take in all the food and drinks I need they are just a goat you never know when your in the right place at the right time
I thin it all depends on the weather, the moon, and mostly where you are hunting in that deers area. Morning hunts should be in a different location in that deers route than an evening hunt. Also, if you hunt 75% mornings, and 25% evening, or vice versa it will change the numbers.
@@monsterhog1118 the moon phase. When deer are up on their feet and active is what I was referring to. Not only the moon phase but what time of the day/night the moon is in the sky shining down. Generally a full moon shining in the middle of the night will lead to more middle of the day kills. A full moon shining early and late in the night will have different affects. Stuff like that is what I was referring too.
@doityourselfhunter9031 One of the main reason I prefer mornings is you get way more opportunity based off time. In the evening you usually get about an hour of prime time, the golden hour before sunset. In the morning you get about three hours of prime hunting time. Law of averages.
Out of my 28 trophy deer 130” or better My best results have been in the mornings. Only 8 were shot in the evening and 5 were mid day ! I can’t remember the dates to check the moon phase, but I do know I’ve shot them in every phase.

@@doityourselfhunter9031 But with that being said I hunt buck bedding on public and it’s hard to beat him to his bed in the morning without him knowing it. But if I was to say rut hunting morning evening are close to a tie like your results.
Here in south east NC i kill the nice bucks in the morning. Now in November i see more at midday on properties dog hunting isnt allowed. Club land and other properties we hunt with dogs its evenings last light no morning movement at all. I always figured that they felt less pressured during mid-day due to most hunters either being in there in the morning or late in the evenings. @@doityourselfhunter9031
I had about 12 morning , 9 midday, 10 evening.
Okay pretty even
If you get one in the morning, how can you know you would have not got one in the evening?
Thanks from Indiana Jeremy.
You will never know.
Okay
I've shot very few bucks in the morning. Mid day and evenings have been much better to me. Wish i would have paid better attention to the moon phases over the years when i killed a buck.
When I do a follow up show. I will give you a website so you can go back and look at the moon, if you remember the date, year, and time you killed a certain deer.
When i see em, between daylight an dark. Time spent hunting makes the difference.
Yes it does.
I'm nearing 50 plus years chasing wild beast an time spent being equal l would say morning an evening has slight edge
Love to hunt early morning.but I have killed bigger right at last of daylight.
What I took from this was if he wasn’t hunting midday he would’ve missed 11 of them
I do hunt a lot of all day sets. Especially during the rut and full moon
I'd be curious to see your numbers based on rut versus pre or post rut.
50/50 reporting from Massachusetts
Thanks for watching
Good video! Great point!
Thanks!
I think knowledge/strategy expands greatly year to year+ moon phase 10000% has something to do with it.
Me too!
Frog you gonna get up here in Kentucky and hunt LBL this year?
I got a TN license. Thinking about looking around on the TN side and Fort Cambell
@doityourselfhunter9031 If you decide on KY or just want to scout it for next year let me know. I'll be camping there again this year.
Thanks for sharing
My biggest was killed on an evening hunt but most good deer I’ve seen or killed have been morning or midday maybe cuz I mostly hunt the rut
Okay
I've killed more in the woods than sitting on the couch is all I know 😂
You got it figured out
My evening kills are generally around 4pm.
The majority of them are 830-1000
My policy is to hunt every chance I get but I do prefer morning sits. I detest tracking and transporting game in the dark.
I do too
Depends on time of season...Early in season I try to avoid ams as it will blow em out of bed.
Thanks for the comment. Good Luck!
Ok Thanks!
I'm split pretty even between the two. My biggest buck was in the morning.
Ok thanks!
The majority before noon. A lot from 9 to 11am.
Okay
Morning
Okay
Ive killed pretty much the same in the morning as i have in the evening. I have kill some in the middle of the day usually during the rut or full moon.
I think most die heart hunters that's going to be their ratio.
Thanks for the comment.
I get there before light stay till dark take in all the food and drinks I need they are just a goat you never know when your in the right place at the right time
True
I thin it all depends on the weather, the moon, and mostly where you are hunting in that deers area. Morning hunts should be in a different location in that deers route than an evening hunt. Also, if you hunt 75% mornings, and 25% evening, or vice versa it will change the numbers.
The Moon?
@@monsterhog1118 yeah, what's the confusion?
@@HuntsT you said "depends on weather, the moon" what are you saying depends on the moon?
@@monsterhog1118 the moon phase. When deer are up on their feet and active is what I was referring to. Not only the moon phase but what time of the day/night the moon is in the sky shining down. Generally a full moon shining in the middle of the night will lead to more middle of the day kills. A full moon shining early and late in the night will have different affects. Stuff like that is what I was referring too.
@@HuntsT ok but fyi the moon has no affect on deer movement.
I hunt more afternoons than morning every year. And yet i killed all but 1 of my bigger bucks in the morning. I gotta start hunting more AMs..
Interesting
I have killed more in the morning to mid-day. I can tie that to the fact I prefer hunting in the morning vice afternoons.
That's probably why.
Okay thanks
66% in the morning
I’ve killed more in the evening but only because of the property. My biggest bucks were midday
Okay
It’s probably about 50/50 for me
Okay
Do you think the weather or the moon phase is a more important factor when planning your out-of-state trips?
Weather hands down..
You can plan around the moon but can't predict the weather more than 2 weeks out.
I hunt morning and evening I’ve probably killed more in the evenings myself. Hunting in eastern North Carolina.
okay
Jeremy I’m in louisiana 38 yrs old been hunting since I was 13, 90 percent of my deer I kill are late morning! 930-1030 am the rest are early morning and last light
Okay thanks for the comment
My biggest public land bucks have all been killed in the evening. My hill bucks have been killed in the morning. Arkansas
You found what works for you.
@@doityourselfhunter9031 But with that being said I hunt buck bedding on public and it’s hard to beat him to his bed in the morning without him knowing it. But if I was to say rut hunting morning evening are close to a tie like your results.
Morning or midday
Before lunch
Hunt in se Missouri 80 % of my kids and my bucks have been killed in morning
Okay Thanks for sharing.
Mornings 💯% 👍🏼🏹🦌
75% of my big deer were evenin hunt's
I’ve killed more in the mornings I hunt in south Alabama I’ve shot a few in the evenings but all my wall mounters are morning times
Ok Thanks
I'm from Maine , we kill them when we see them
That will work
Here in south east NC i kill the nice bucks in the morning. Now in November i see more at midday on properties dog hunting isnt allowed. Club land and other properties we hunt with dogs its evenings last light no morning movement at all. Not bashing dogs i hunt both ways but your chances go way down after opening day of hound season in October they will go nocturnal.
I'm a morning hunter
What is you’re success rate on your hunting trips?
Probably 50%
