Would like to see an England A team against more stern opposition, like Portugal at full strength (when their best players aren't busy in their respective leagues, though is this an 'international window' now that I think?), or away to Georgia, maybe a Pacific island tour. Would be some great experience for these young lads and we can see them under more scrutiny than what we see at club level. Can only see what players do under pressure, when they're actually under pressure.
Great to see an England A team playing though, more of this please!
Several guys put their hands up in that match. I would put Pearson and Ojomoh in the senior side right now. Hodge was brilliant as well. If you ran Ojomoh at 12, you could play Lawrence at his natural 13. I’d love to see that to be honest.
I thought Joe Heyes looked good, tbh. All over the field, hard to judge the scrummaging obviously but he was one that surprised me. Agreed on Pearson, Pepper, Tuima, Ojomoh and Hodge, they all look ready to jump up to the first team. Fisilau looks like an exciting prospect too.
Think there shoule be a televised England A vs England before any final squad announcement. Reminds me of being in school and being in the possibles and beating the probables.
Sam Riley, Joe Heyes, Josh Iosefa- Scott, Rusi Tuima, Tom Pearson, Guy Pepper, Greg Fisilau, Harry Randall, Max Ojomoh, Olly Hartley, Cadan Murley, Will Muir, Josh Hodge. Think all these could walk into the England squad and some even start.
Big fan of Josh Hodge! The fact he took over kicking duties for a fair bit was also impressive.
Josh Hodge reminds me of Ian Balshaw and he was some player.
Yes and much better skills than balshaw
Heyes, Pearson and Barbeary should all start and either Will Muir or Murley on the wing
Tuima, without a shadow of a doubt. if you play him with Pearson and Pepper, you have the line-out options covered too. Bit harsh on Underhill, but he's not set the world on fire lately. Murley and Ojomoh both know the way to the line, and let's face it, can't be any more inept than the current pairing. Josh Hodge would be a great sub too. But I daresay that despite picking them for the A team, Steve Baldrick's cunning plan doesn't include change.
Impressed with so many but Pearson, Pepper, No.4 (forget name), Hodge, Atkinson & Muir really stood out for me
I think Heyes is hard done by with 1*, he was powerful and hit rucks hard. I think Fisilau should have 3* too, looked really natural and he was everywhere
Fair enough, TBF I think Heyes deserves a shot starting for England, just not fully convinced yet
England need fast wingers give some of the youngest a go nothing to loss in the current England team
Quins fan here. I think Oscar Beard has bags of potential but it's a least a year too early for him to be anywhere near the test team. I think he'll bulk up a bit and be great player in the future. Murley is just one of those players that will always find himself on the end of moves, England really need that
Disagree on Barbeary - positional play was very good and as good as Earl is he isn't an international no8 for England, always takes on 2-3 defenders and gets us over the gainline. Get him involved in the England setup, improve his performance/fitness and then play Pearson and Earl on the flanks. Would like to see Martin, Itoje, Pearson, Earl and Barbeary for the Ireland game, having the size of Martin and Barbeary would really help with the scrum, whilst Pearson and Earl give 2 great jumping options and pace around the park.
Hodge. What an athlete.
Ojomoh. All the skills
Randall. Adds so much tempo.
I was at the game today and most people thought Hodge was the standout player, poise, balance, good footwork, quick thinking, a naturally talented player.
I want to see this A team vs the first team. I think it would be very close
I think Fisilau deserves another watch. He's aggressive and made much more impact than Barbeary
I wonder if Ojomoh and Lawrence in the centre would make a difference - then Lawrence would get to play in his natural position at 13 with someone who is a club team mate. Given the shortage of decent 12s, Ojomoh might be worth a shout.
Great vid! Would be good to do something similar for all home nations. Many of us mainly watch internationals and have little idea of who is up and coming
I personally felt Atkinson was awesome. His kicking from had was great and he was involved directly in 5 tries. Think 1 star is more than harsh.
Anyone interested in seeing England vs England A? After the performances last weekend it might be interesting to see who comes out on top.
Honestly, I reckon you could drag and drop the England Saxons back three? Muir, Hodge & Murley all looked impressive and I think they’d all be go well in the full squad
No conclusions about a player’s suitability for Test rugby can be drawn from this game. England A would have been better off playing a Championship club.
Great way for Portugal to get competitive game time as well... great idea all round!
Hodge has to come in 100% - Christian Cullen similarities? Muir may not have turbo speeds but he has one of those running styles that means a defender never seems to get “both legs” Pearson and Pepper class above Underhill and Roots for me.
This was good for what it was. England A were expected to hammer this second string Portugal team and they did. From a fan point of view I was excited by Tuima, Pepper and Hodge. Like you stated Rich, Tuima is a one off in this country. He offers something completely different to any other second row option available to England. I’m all about having a point of difference in a 23. He’d be perfect on the bench for England, injecting something new for an opposition to think about. I thought Pepper was brilliant. I’ve singled him out above Pearson as I’ve seen a lot of Pearson for Northampton and have always been impressed by him, so I expected him to be good here. As I’d only heard bits about Pepper, mostly on this channel I didn’t know what to expect really but he’s got everything. I think there’s a strong chance that he’ll appeal to Borthwick as whilst he’s an openside, he’s got enough attributes to fill in anywhere across the back row. Lastly, Hodge was great at being a fullback. He does what fullbacks are supposed to do. Counter attack, good kicking and good positioning. The only issue I see with him, and I say this from a perceived Borthwick point of view, is he’s small. I don’t think that matters in the slightest. Look at Capuozzo of Italy. If you’re good enough, pick them. But I fear size will count against him.
I was at the game and although it was a walkover and easy to look good a number caught the eye:
Baxter and Heyes looked strong
Tuima has good hands
Pearson, Barbeary and Pepper could be the England proper back row.
Randall was no nonsense
Atkinson played clever
Muir and Murley showed great skills
Hodge I would have no problem starting full back
Hartley looks like a real prospect and again hopefully the long term 12 for England
Ojomoh was one of the best players
Englefield off the bench is worth looking at. Very snappy pass and looked like the sort of player england want to use in an uptempo game.
Randall could be catapulted into the main squad now, especially if Mitchell is still injured, give him a chance in training against Care/ Spencer and see if he puts his hand up for a place in the maychday squad
As you say, it's a shame it wasn't the full Portugal team but Pepper and Pearson as a pair were tremendous. Such a natural pairing, they can both do it all but seem to be at their very best at what the other one is merely good at.
The pairing rolls off the tounge alright...the new kamikaze kids maybe
Tom Pearson was immense
its a shame they didn't have a more competitive game, What's your thoughts on Radwan? I thought hed get a crack at England a least this 6 nations. Hodge could be a great shout for the squad, Randell off the bench behind Spencer as well. I think the england selections are all over the shop atm, i dont think borthwick knows what to do selection wise but we'll see.
Having seen both matches, i would answer by simply saying - most of them !
Tuima straight into starting v Ireland.
We need more power in front 5.
Maybe drop Itoje.
My team
Genre, George, Cole, Tuima, Chessum, Pearson, Underhill, Earl
Randall, Smith F, IFW, Ojomoh, Lawrence, Freeman, Steward.
Pearson and Hodge should be straight into the full side, Barbeary off the bench with Cunningham South getting first dibs at 8. Tuima looked decent too. Might as well get Pepper in, Ben Curry seems like a waste of a place.
Murley on the wing or possibly Cokanasiga - Get one of them in there for Freeman who should play 13. Slade's had too many meh games for England and I think he's had his chips.
Obviously Feyi-Waboso on the other wing. If he doesn't start against Ireland and we get Daly again I will loose my s**t.
Lawrence had a shocker but is due another chance, safe in the knowledge there's no one else unless we want to dust down Tuilagi out again, whom should be a bench option only now.
Marler / Genge
George
Stewart (holds nose) (Cannot wait for Fin Baxter, the Sale lad and possibly the under 20 hooker who looks good too to come through)
Etoji
Martin
Pearson
Earl
Cunningham-South
Spencer
Fin Smith (Sod it - why not)
Lawrence - 2 weeks catching practice first mind.
Murley - or another proper winger, just anyone hungry with pace.
F-W
Hodge
Surely this would be loads better!? Doubt they'd beat Ireland as it's just been chucked together but we need to get real pace, and threat in the team and build from there. We're going nowhere fast with our current 15 because they don't go anywhere fast.
SB - admit you made a mistake and liven it up now. At least you'd be able to make the excuse that it is a young team rather than just pretending it is.
Oooh and please no more Danny Care - his retirement jolly-up tour is overstaying it's welcome, I'd rather Randle or get Quirk in, someone off the bench with something to prove, not a 38 year old for God's sake.
Would love to grab some consolation from the performances here after how the Scotland game went. But realistically this was a game against literal amateurs, the England A players face stiffer competition every weekend at club level. Hopefully the England management took something from how they trained, attitudes etc, but I fear that to draw any conclusions on players full international readiness is sheer folly.
Got to see England A play much better Teams. Hard to learn too much from this. Does anyone know if England A still counts to lock players into England?
pointless fixture given the lopsided result, but thank you for your analysis of the guys playing. Charlie Ewels may well be a good A team captain, but he is not up to Test level (and I'm a Bath fan). Thanks again, and enjoying the channel.
There has to be a better way to test than this. Im not sure you can take anything from this except to be going down the wrong track and we can see where this is leading the first team and its not good.
Alfie’s a bit like Billy Vunipola, in that he’s either effective or not
Its not like the current team lack talent, they are just learning new coaches and techniques. Look at the French, they're also going through a torrid time
Borthwick is not up standard of an international coach. There must be better people available. GARY from NZ.
If none of those players are brought into the squad after that this game has to go down as the most pointless game of rugby ever played.
Borthwick: “hey guys, here’s a chance to play in an England shirt and impress me so that you can make your way into the 1st team”
England A’s: “hi Steve, we won 91-5. We think that’s pretty good. Any of us done enough to get in the squad?”
Borthwick: “nope”
I think Murley was flattered by your ***. Yes 3 tries but not involved much otherwise and perhaps a bit small for top level?
Yea, I had him at 2stars but upgraded since he had a hat trick, bit in that game maybe should stay at 2
josh Hodge is very good ball in hand but lacks the maturity in decision making. several times he had the opportunity to pass the ball for a teammate in a better position to make it to the line but goes himself and gets tackled.
Are all these players locked in for three years now?
Hodge is too fast to be selected by Borthwick
I’m 59 and if I was selected in this team I’d have looked good against Portugal. It ain’t the Mc Boks, Mc Ozzie’s and Mc Englanders in Scotland, so no conclusions from this game.
Pepper would have been sent off for that terrible Farrell like shoulder charge in the first minute in a real England game!... You have to take the performances in the A game with a pinch of salt.
That's a great point, when I saw that I thought it would have been pinged in a full international
Radwan and Thorley deserve a call up, first time in a long time, Ive enjoyed an England mens game. SB doesn’t pick a best England team, he picks his team, which isn’t close to Englands best. Jamie Blamire reminds me of Dan Sheehan, one is the best hooker in the world the other can’t get a game. ( Englands 1st team). Why SB chooses the worse non winger in Daly is a complete disgrace! We have great talent, just so sad to see many not given a deserved chance.
If Josh Hodge has flair, skills and pace Borthwick will want nothing to do with him.
Whoever planned this fixture really messed up. Portugal had basically none of the main squad and inclusive had few players from the Portuguese 2nd division. The game should have been 3 weeks later. I hope this won't concern the other matches Portugal will have versus South Africa.
I'm starting to think Murley might be a bit of Cipriani in that he's an amazing player who just doesn't work very hard in training.
The on field evidence has been there for years. Feed him and he scores, yet he's always been a nearly for England.
If we're starting Spencer in the next game over Care, there's much less call for a left footed kicker in the back line. Murley for Daly, let's finish some tries.
Also, it'd be a bold call with Lawrence at fault for quite a few mistakes in the last game but you could parachute that settled midfield of Ojomoh/ Lawrence in and have our own Tuipolotu.
Zack mercer
No offense to Portugal, but I think you can only come to any relevant conclusions when England A face much tougher opposition.
No Radwan. What a waste of
So England, dominated the scrum (a lot to do with the tighthead prop), Joe Heyes made good ground with ball in hand. But you give him 1 star and Fin Baxter 2 stars. And this is why many people think you have an anti-Leicester bias.
As I stated at the beginning, I discounted the scrum in the scoring as it was so one sided it was silly.
91-5 makes the game a total waste of time.
Tuima should replace Chessum in the first team
Sorry but Murley just doesn’t have enough gas for the top level. Even in the Prem he’s been found out. And Eng need pace in the back three.
A waste of a fixture for both sides
