It’s a fairly simple song/meaning but it might take a couple listens. While she says you’re a cowboy like me, it’s really her saying you’re a con artist like me. She described it as two con artists who had been swindling wealthy folks, neither meant to ever fall in love. Then they met: “forever is the sweetest con”
I think the cowboy reference actually confused me. I was trying to figure out why "Cowboy" and I didn't really think of a cowboy to be the conning type so much, I guess. I don't know, I haven't seen too many westerns and where do people really develop an idea about what a cowboy is anyway? Technically, it's someone who tends to the cows...but for some reason that name stuck the became an image of a dude starting fights in saloons and bank heists or something equally crazy but heroic. I don't know, I was trying to navigate through all that and it just wasn't totally clicking in the moment.
I love the first line about the tennis court and the “tent like thing” so much, it just immediately sets you at like a country club party the narrator doesn’t really belong at or care about. It sets up the con artist storyline so perfectly.
The narrator is an outsider at these events she scamming at, and in the song narration she's stepped outside of even her own experiences to reflect on what is happening.
So when she says "you hang from my lips like the gardens of babylon" she means to reference the hanging gardens of babylon which are referenced in the bible and in ancient mithology, but no one knows if they really existed. What she means to say is they are kissing and they are in love but she doesn't know if the other con artist is really in love, so he is like the gardens of babylon, a good story, but maybe just a story.
The backup singer is Marcus Mumford. Also I love tennis too. I used to play in my twenties but not now because I have severe arthritis in my hips so very disappointed now. The song is about two cons falling in love.
Tennis is so awesome. I wonder if I will age gracefully when I can't play the way I play now. Time will tell. I think the concept of cons and cowboys didn't overlap for me. I just didn't get the cowboy concept for a bit. I was thinking "wait why cowboy?"
Taylor is that artist who wrote a whole album by herself because critics were saying a teenager couldn't possibly be writing all her songs. She is very gifted with writing, that is for sure.
Honestly, it isn't just you. Most Swifties don't care about her most hit/radio songs. I think Taylor knows that as well. Perhaps those radio/catchy songs are strategic in order to stay popular and relevant in a brutal industry. She has this beautiful song from a reputation album called "New Year's day"(Maybe react to that?). But it never becomes a radio hit. Instead songs like "look what you made me do" become famous.
Who knows. Some make music for the money. Some do it for love. Some manage to have both. Sometimes it varies from song to song. I'm sure she's made a handful of songs with a very intentional approach to making a radio hit. I think "trouble" is an obvious example of this. She worked with some of the most successful songwriters who wrote like all the music for Britney Spears and Kesha and 1D and all those guys. Like all the big names, no joke. They wrote it all (mostly) so when I saw she was working with them, I thought to myself.....oh, I see how it is. It's unreal how many songs these guys wrote and produced for radio hits. Check out Shellback, Dr. Luke and Max Martin. You'll see the kind of industry this is more after looking into those names. Especially the last 2. It's weird...it's almost like the majority of pop singers have little to nothing to do with how they sound or what they are saying. They are just the face of another persons creativity that was designed for mainstream success. I don't mean that all the way through but I strongly feel that way for a large portion of the music industry that makes it to mainstream radio. If you know why, you probably feel a similar way. But this stuff just isn't known to most but it isn't hard to research. And I think my impression started to develop from there. I like that this album feels nothing like that. It feels pure and unadulterated. It even sounds that way, musically and sonically. From the words to the little details to the texture of her voice and instruments, it sounds much more from the heart than from the goals of mainstream music hits.

Cowboy like me is definitely in my top 10 of Tay's songs. The sound of it is so rich (which actually perfectly suits the message of the lyrics). But I kind of don't want to tell you my interpretation of this song because it might spoil your own listening experience. Enjoy your re-listens and thank you for taking your time to react to it! :)
i think what makes taylor so special is the ability to change everything about her music entirely while still always maintaining true to herself and still keeping up this powerful lyricism. taylor has said that no matter what production comes on top of the song, she always wants to be able to play it like it was when she wrote it, which is whether with a simple guitar or a piano, so it all comes from the same basis. she has also never released a song without her writing it, it’s always been her and maybe one or two other producers. she has basically opened up her diary for us all to listen to all her life. and while folklore and evermore are describing more fictional events and scenarios, it is still her and it always finds a way to connect to her and the listeners, which is something you surely don’t get when you have 15 songwriters on a radio song. no matter which genre, she is always true to herself and true to the listener :)
I'm obsessed with how this one sounds. It's like a lullaby. This is another narrative story song and I like how she sketches the outline of the plot but there is still a lot of scope for imagining possibilities. I suppose a lot of songwriting does this, but I just love the mood here! It's interesting that you remarked on the observational perspective, because after years or diary-writing personal perspective songwriting, I think she was definitely trying something new on folklore and evermore. She's experimenting with how to write different perspectives
i think someone from another video made an observation that "now you hang from my lips, like the gardens of babylon" meant like it was almost not true, or like questioning if their love ever existed like the gardens of Babylon
Interesting. I knew when the lyric happened that it was getting into some historical reference I wasn't confident enough on to make any comments about. @@worshipingtaylor8934 I totally get what you are saying but I am pretty upfront about my bias and perspective. The reality is that I am a producer and a musician and a songwriter so what checks the boxes for me will be different for those without that angle of observation. You could say the same thing about someone who's wearing "swiftie" blinders or someone that just can't find a critical perspective because they are at a point of liking her too much to see past their fandom and observe more objectively. There is no perfect balance, only a personal balance and this is mine. It changes over time, of course...
Don't know what else to say. I feel like I'm just trying to say that my perspective is my perspective. There isn't anything wrong with it. I might see or feel a certain way about what I hear because of this but that is literally the case for everyone. Just because my bias is more identifiable in certain ways, partly because I am very expressive of it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist for others in thier own way as well.
@@JSteezy i appreciate your answer. I'm encouraged you are slowly getting it. Stay on the path and you will get there.
Sorry if i roll my eyes at your gleeming hypocritical credentials...
Any walk of life can understand, get it, and get there.
Peace😊
