No reason to be upset. RS has always been a rock/pop focused publication. I haven't read the list, but I'm guessing the closest they would get to Holdsworth would be Alex Lifeson, maybe John McLaughlin. Although I would expect them to make a farce of it automatically by placing McLaughlin in some random place in the middle, behind players like Kurt Cobain, Billy Armstrong, Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, etc. It was bound to be a popularity contest, with a healthy dose of Disney-esque, affirmative action-style diversity. When I imagine the current RS writing staff making 'Best of' lists, I picture a room filled with a mix of quirky Zooey Deschanel art hoes sipping pumpkin spice lattes, and guys with optional eclectic and well-groomed facial hair who either took their wife's last name or hyphenated both when they got married, and of course perfectly balanced representation from every race and ethnic group and level of melatonin. They think nothing of wearing prescriptionless glasses and Carhardt hats indoors. Just like they think nothing of Allan Holdsworth. But we all know an objective best guitarist list would be flooded with jazz and classical musicians that most people have never heard of. Rolling Stone is run primarily by those people, primarily for those people. Nuff said
Tremendous study. I remember trying something similar back in '82/'83 after listening non-stop to the I.O.U. album for weeks. Then again trying similar patterns after listening to Bill Connors evolution after obviously being heavily influenced by Holdsworth. Always enjoyed Connors on a Les Paul in the 70s and was floored by how much his stle evolved from the 70s to the strat style mid 80s. When you wish to take a fun break you might delve into Connors evolution just for fun. Sadly, Connors got the label of "Holdsworth lite," but he obviously figured out some amazing "Holdsworth hacks" before Brett really dug deep into Holdsworth thought process.
Great lessons as usual. Can't believe Alan got left off the Rolling Stone list. Criminal!
Rolling Stone, RRHOF, so out of touch with what is going on and what has happened.
