Agree with Rob's comment that the internet has expanded Xena:WP to new audiences, that was how I discovered it. Loved his observation that more adults watched Xena, vs its TV partner, HTLJ. Was also struck by Lucy's insight into Gabrielle not only being Xena's "redemption"... but also being the "price" of Xena's redemption. Thanks for uploading these interviews.
I love that Tapert is the type of person who is personally touched by the fact that he could be a part of the show that lead to the boom of women led roles.
9:31 how times have changed though lol compare that to what she said in a 2019 interview: _When asked if she still thought that was still a good ending for the show, Lawless immediately said, "No!"_ _"Of course I don't," she laughed. "At the time, we were like, ‘Oh, that's a really strong choice.' We didn't realize how real the characters are to other people. And I watched…that movie the Perfect Storm and thought George Clooney being left with a bloody life-saving ring or something at the end and I was so scandalized. [Laughs.] I invested two hours of my life and they basically left him for dead on the high seas and I hated that. And yet all these fans had spent six years watching and rewatching every episode and we cut her bloody head off. That is awful. I just think we thought of her as a storytelling mechanism and that was really, really offensive to all those fans and I do very much regret it._ I mean, everybody had a wake-up call after the LGBT FANS DESERVE BETTER movement that happened after Lexa so I’m not really surprised.
Yeah... I was not really upset becouse she died, I was upset with the way they did it. She died in such a cruel way... I'm in, few minutes before she was saying that if she had just 30 seconds to live she would choose to do it looking through Gabrielle's eyes, them she was literally screaming her name in the battle field while a hole army was massacring her... They put all the efforts to make it sad as possible. I was destroyed in tears by the end 😭
I was surprised to ever hear that Lucy and Renee ever had any disagreements that would have caused even a mild estrangement or tension. They seem like the best of friends whenever they're seen together.
They could have had them, but at the end of the day they still respected each other I guess, and they are so at ease with each other even these days, whatever disagreement they had, I don't think that it was a serious one :)
is only natural when you're working with a person 6 days of the week and going through so much stress and tension, even more if you two are so different. But I am sure they never had any serious disagreements and always respected each other very much. I've seen they mention playfully that they sometimes argued over how a certain scene should be played, usually because both were coming from different places but at some point the learned to match their styles together.
@@melanieelizabeth4607 I agree with you that he just want to say something different than disagreement. I also don't agree with him at all that Lucy is more like Xena than Renee as Gabriele.
Oooh! Thank you for that!! What suprised me most was Rob´s statement that Lucy is closer to Xena than Ren to Gabriele!?!? I mean, we all know that Lucy is realy diferent from Xena, Lucy often say that for yourself, but I always think that Renee had much more closer to her charachter. So this realy suprise me much!
I can actually see why Rob sees them like that because Gabrielle was very confident, talkative and loud, sometimes she was even too focused on herself and what she considered right. Reneé is very shy and a little insecure and she doesn't like attention. She is quiet and calm... Rob said in another interview that Reneé is more like the character that Gabrielle became later (more controlled, mature and quiet, I guess). Xena is quiet, serious and introspective and when you think of Lucy, your first thought is "oh, she is loud and a clown, she has nothing to do with Xena" but that's how Lucy is in front of the camera or the public. She is entertaining and likes the attention BUT if you pay attention to Lucy's behavior when she is around her family and friends, in an environment she feels safe and comfortable, she is actually pretty calm and peaceful. She doesn't talk that much about her feelings or personal life either, Renee does that more often. So yeah, I see Lucy as an introspective and quiet person, like Xena. Both are also very responsible and mature.
1:22 I think this is a lot OFF. I don't think Rob thought much about what he was saying here. Lucy herself has told many times how much different she is from her character, how much she hated fighting scene etc. and Lucy herself has said several times that Renee was much like her character at the begining.
I will say when Xena was in the intial episodes of Hercules Lucy's acting sucked. But she improved a lot. But action shows aren't fashionable right now. Now it's supernatural or real life dramas. And of course reality TV is taking up a lot of the slots that were available before.
my sister that I have adopted we are both lesbian bushes we're on the fourth time through Xena. Ruth has seen it probably 20 times the entire season. each time I fall deeper in love I have a collection on my UA-cam channel over 400 pieces of scrap of film that I have collected on this wonderful show thank you very much.
Nah you'd have to be far more accurate than they were then. Would need a huge budget. People want real life drama and shows about superpowers rather than action shows. Just like detective, law, police and other kids of things aren't going to work right now. Even sitcoms are out of favour.
Gabrielle was the worst character of the four principals across the two series. Even worse than Joxer and Salmoneous because you at least expect them to be useless and annoying. Whereas the sidekick shouldn't go ou of their way to get the hero killed. I wanted to see Xena kicking butt not playing charity cases or starring in a soap opera. I think I started falling out of love with he show when they had all the Xena doubles episodes because they were ridiculous. And then when all the you killed my kid soap opera stuff started I was done, let alone when it turned form being an action show to a romance show. Unfortunately all action and detective shows go this way after a few seasons

I was so young when this show came on tv 📺 I was obsessed !! This show took you back in time it was extremely cool 😎

Kinda the same with Adam West and Burt Ward.
I guess he means "opinions" instead of disagreement per se..Maybe..
@@melanieelizabeth4607 I agree with you that he just want to say something different than disagreement. I also don't agree with him at all that Lucy is more like Xena than Renee as Gabriele.
The series did grow with the fans as we got older the relationship between Xena an Gabriel did also.
love Xena that show was off the rocks so great wow wish it never ended so sad they killed Xena off and left poor Gabby all alone

Lucy has said in interviews that Renee was just like Gabrielle. Ted Raimi has said the same.

I think he was talking more about Lucy being a introspective and quiet person a little bit like Xena.
What do you mean Cagney and Lacey didn't work? It was my absolute favorite while growing up.
Great show. Excellent cast. Crappy ending. And no, there still aren't many shows or movies with female leads. In fact, fewer every year.

Thank you!
