While in prison Merle Haggard was encouraged to write lyrics and make music by a fellow convict and when Johnny Cash famously recorded a concert at Folsom prison where Merle was in the audience, it further encouraged Merle. He, to me, was one of the greats! Thanks Biz.
It was in San Quentin
“There are certain things you only learn from father figures and if can’t learn that shit at home, the world is going to teach it to you.”
- BizMatik
Mama had other kids who didn't go to prison. But yes...SOME KIDS need a strong masculine hand. All children need a daddy!
My mom was raised in Tennessee and played all the old school country tunes.. She was a tough mother and my pops was even tougher.. All my ma had to say " just wait til your dad comes home" I knew right there I was in trouble.. They raised me right.. RIP MA AND PA, see ya again some day, see ya upstairs some day..
Thanks for this 🙏😊
OH! That's a SONG right there!!! FANTASTIC take on child raising by moms and dads...thank you, sir!!!
this is REAL country!!! Them outlaws were the TRUTH
Legendary country singer songwriter Merle Haggard came from the same part of California as me. Haggard went to prison for armed robbery in the late 1950's. He served three years of time and was paroled in 1960. Ronald Reagan, California governor at the time, granted him a pardon in 1972. When you're read for more from Merle Haggard check out "Okie From Muskogee", "The Fightin' Side of Me", "Workin Man Blues", "Tulare Dust", "Irma Jackson", and "I'm A Lonesome Fugitive" among others. By the way, parents can discipline children without beating them. In fact, beating children tends to turn them in to future abusers. Plenty of people deny that, but plenty of people are abusers without realizing it...
His name rhymes with Earl.He is a country legend! One of the outlaws

One of my favorite
Merl Hager song
Live from Austin Texas is
🎵 misery and gin 🎵
His voice is so on point on this performance
Keep the good work Biz 👏 🙌 👍🏼 👌
Misery and Gin is phenomenal. Merle had so many phenomenal songs.
Merle was one class act!
The Bakersfield Sound which changed Country and Rock music. Merle's breakthrough commercial success album "I'm A Lonesome Fugitive" was/is huge. Merle's band The Strangers are one of the best bands in music.
The Bakersfield Sound is responsible for Country Rock influence on Dylan, CSNY, The Stones, Byrds, Allman Brothers, Southern Rock in general and too many other artists to mention. I grew up in the 60s with Country and Rock music in my parents house, my parents loved to go to Country and Rock dance clubs every Saturday night, and concerts. Haggard aka "Hag" is my mom's favorite Country artist.
He was in prison and saw Johnny Cash a d changed his life
To say Merle is an amazing Artist is not enough! To truly discover his gift of songwriting, please react to Merle’s song of struggles of being an ex-con.
Merle Haggard - Lonesome Fugitive
"in the good old days when times were bad" is a really good one. Also "California cotton fields" is also great.
I have always loved this song by him and at this point being older, I played this live in bands so many times. I do that squawking guitar part and sing backing vocals. And I guarantee you people dance their asses off it's crazy.
Nice reaction Biz. Merle, rhymes with girl. Merle was the man.
Old school country music. Boy Biz, I can identify with you. When I got to 11 or 12 when my mother tried to give me the belt I began to grab the belt. BTW, Merle sounds like pearl. Another good song from him is “favorite memory”.
I love this song!!! Thanks for reacting!! ❤❤❤
Merle, rhymes with earl 🙂 love this song
Polite correction by you. Grateful Dead did a nice cover of this song.
@@bobfreedman9607 thanks 😊 I’ll have to check it out
It's Merle, rhymes with Pearl... Great reaction, please keep doing your thing!!
Man, Biz. Marty 😢?? It's only 1 Merle. Respect ❤
Merle was the common man’s poet. I highly recommend “Holding Things Together” by Merle.
You’re right. No one wants to talk about it. Two parents are the best way to raise a child.
More merle plz ❤
Grateful Dead cover this like grandma's quilt.
Classic country tune!
Thanks for your insightful reaction to this classic Haggard song, Biz. Like you, he is genuine.
Merle brought in “The Bakersfield Sound”….to hear more, I suggest:
Dwight Yoakum - Thousand Miles from Nowhere
Gary Allan - Smoke Rings in the Dark
omg you have to do this one:
Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard - It's All Going to Pot (Official Video)
Oh yea Biz a true legand!!! This is a great song.
React to Workin' Man Blues by Merle Haggard.
Great writer
It's a great day when you got Biz jamming to the Hag. 👍👍👋
Merle has so many great songs. "Are the Good Times Really Over" is a good one you would appreciate.
Back in the 80's when I played in a country band, we did several Merle songs. At least one per set. When we'd play "Mama Tried" we would go right into a song by Johnny Paycheck called "I'm the Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised". You'll have to check that tune out someday and you'll see how they sorta relate to each other.
Mans a legend
Merle = all timer Storyteller Territory .
A couple of great Merle tunes, Cherokee Maiden" and "Rambling Fever".
Grew up in 60s listening to this.😊
Daddy frank somebody give me a breakdown on that narrow route brother?
6 Daddy Frank, I'll tell you brother. What about family about pulling? The guys are complain about a hoe. Everybody pitching in doing their pot and making everything complete
Don't beat your kids.
Treat everyone in the world the way you would like to be treated by them.
Nice reaction. For some new country, check out Charley Crockett “the sky’d become teardrops” , “don’t cry” Or “welcome to hard times”
Merle pronounced with the second e silent. This song is loosely based on truth. He was in prison but, not for a life sentence. He was an obitual offender. Not really serious crimes but he was hard to hold. He kept escaping so, that's what actually put him in prison. His crimes were only bad enough to sentence him to shorter jail terms. The repeated escapes sent him to prison. He did get early release. I once heard that Johnny Cash had something to do with his release but, I don't know. I didn't see Johnny mentioned in the bio I read. He did hear Johnny while in prison and felt that was something he might be able to do.
Okie From Muskogee, Fightin' Side of Me. When Did Right Become Wrong. Even Harold's Super Service. Lot of great old tunes.
I was raised on this music. Great. Hey Biz, try “The only hell my momma ever raised” by Johnny Paycheck. You’ll love it.
Now check out The Grateful Dead cover from the Skeleton Album (1971)
This one and Okie from Muskogee are favorites from Merle.
Merle (rhymes with Earl) is a legend of the Outlaw Country genre and benefited from a prison system that rehabilitated its prisoners and offered pardons and early release. Also, Discipline doesn’t have to be physical. There are lots of ways to discipline your kids that don’t involve physical violence.
M / EARL 😊R.I.P ☹ TO ( THE HAG ) LOTS & LOTS YOU CAN DO WITH THIS GREAT LEGEND BIZ! 💯OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE, THE FIGHTIN SIDE OF ME, BIG CITY, WORKING MAN BLUES, I THINK I'LL JUST STAY HERE AND DRINK😊 WELL THERE'S SOME BIZ, THAT'S A GOOD STARTER! 👍
Merle, sounds like Earl, Branded Man is a good one also
this song is a regular played by the grateful dead in concert check it out
His name is pronounced like Meryl Strep's name.
I am not a huge fan of Merle Haggard but His lyrics are always honest and sometimes really raw.
Good reaction and your commentary you are saying the truth.
This is true story about his life He was sentenced to life in San Quentin but received a governor's pardon
The best country music artist who ever lived and it’s not even really close.
His first name is pronounced like the name Earl but with an M at the beginning…M-Earl
If you like this song check out the Grateful Dead's cover of it, it has been a staple in thier rotation and rocked up just a little bit....
GOOMBA LIVES!!!
He wasn't doin' life without parole. Lesser charges. Johnny Cash played at the prison where he was and he said, "That's what I want to do!"
Really a sad song, I feel bad for his Mama.I was left with 3 kids when my ex decided he wanted a divorce so he could go marry someone else, but we made it and the kids came out good thank god.
I am so attached to the song and I absolutely love your reaction man. But my thought right now in this conversation where I paused it, is that it's not black and white man. It's not like they're either good or bad, and I know that you know this and I'm probably preaching to the choir. But it's a complex thing when your parents try to set an example for you and you're so young you don't even realize the sacrifices they're making. You just have to go out and be experiencing your boundaries and pushing.
But then later you see these people growing up and doing exactly what you did except they're doing it in their own way and it's just a process of discovery. It's just agonizing if you care for somebody but it's the way of life. It's how we got here. Love your reaction brother.
I've only known this song from the dead, it's nice to hear the original, and I can see why they decided to cover the song. IDK, I guess I'll have to listen more, but I don't see one as better than the other, though they are obviously different.
👍👍👍
You need to play Merle Haggard, silver Wings. Greatest memory of snowball the hell and you'll never find Amarillo Patriot to our country. Then Merle Haggard
❤❤❤
Out of all the movie stars and what not I have known in my life. I went to his concert. That man played his heart out. Best concert ever walk of life there. I don't care what color you where were you you from if you were a gang, if you weren't a gang, if you were a family with your kids. Merle Haggard rules and he is the only one I ever asked. An article from besides when I went backstage. Passes to oz fest in 02 with the gorge and Pantera signed my bottom however.
Ever Merle Haggard. He lived a life Fisher and he is part of the highway man. Which I suggest you check out silver wings. You need to play moral haggard, silver Wings. Of course, there's so many hints of his but I have just a best concert. I ever went to my life. And he played his heart out. I don't remember when they quit I mean technically, he was only playing, supposed to play for like 2 hours and that's with the Chicken dinner with that ticket and yeah, he played until well, into the night, it was insane him and his son, so God bless marrow haggard. Yes, he was in Folsom prison. Vinnie, I don't remember how he became friends with Johnny Cash and everybody. But the highway man consists of johnny cash willie nelson wayland jennings , merle haggard , chris christopher soon
You NEED to listen to The Grateful Dead do this.
Ultimately, it was up to him (Merle) whether he would follow good or bad and temporarily he went the wrong way. Did you know "Little Richard" was beaten constantly by his FATHER. Everyone is important in themselves and in relationships.
LOL, Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. I’ve been telling kids that for decades.
" Holding things together "
Deceptively good singing. Listen again and try to sing along with some of those unexpected note choices.
Check out Marty Stuart Country Boy Rock & Roll live on Letterman!
Sing me back home is another MH song you should react to . Live version best thanks
I don't listen to country music. But I do listen to Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard
Every kid, male and female need Father's and Mother's while they are in their formative years.
I have managed to have the nuclear family. The whole Mom and Dad staying together, our 2.5 kids 😅 I really think that the basics just aren't taught to kids, today. Every child male and female should know everything that they need to know, to take care of themselves alone. And they should all be taught the basics of being a decent human before they are released into the wild. Lol But, as we all know, not every kid is going to have these basic needs met. This is waaaay too deep of a conversation for the comment section. So, I'll leave it at this. 🥰
Have a great day Biz!!! 💙
The last E in his name is silent. Pronounced Merl, rhymes with Earl.
M E R L Haggard....
Check out Paul Cauthen “cocaine country dancin”. Look for live version from galaxy barn
pronounced Murl brotha but yeah I love Mar Lee Haggard
My oldest son ended up in jail at 19.. he was messed up on drugs and a gay guy propositioned him.. my son.. being straight said no.. not my thing. apparently .. this guy didn't take no for an answer and 2 hrs later when my 19 yr old son said NO again.. he was followed to the bathroom and this dude really went in hard.. my son.. went off... if he had been sober .. never would have happened.. but he wasn't and he beat this person up. My son spent 9 months in jail with a hate crime over his head at 19.. he's now 36... Married for 11 yrs and been clean and sober for 12 yrs. God is good.. My son could have been in prison for the rest of his life for 1 altercation. I raised him right.. the system .. sometimes screws you. To me.. he didn't do anything wrong.
Merle is pronounced like the word "pearl"
Fyi
His name is Merl haggard.
another great country singer is Freddie Fender and his song Wasted Days and Wasted Nights may be a future consideration for you?
“If you don’t discipline your kids in the house the world is going to discipline them.” I’m but an easy man to impress but that was an extremely poignant observation.
