For those that say you're only French if you win, I remember the whole country defending Zidane. Without him and Thuram, France doesn't make the wc. Domenech sabotaged France with his madness.
Domenech’s reign with France was truly awful after the 2006 World Cup even before it, after 2006 France would finish last in their group in both the 2008 Euros and the disgraceful 2010 World Cup a World Cup France only qualified thanks to Henry’s double hand ball.
I would not call his penalty a casual panenka: he knew how good Buffon was and he shoot for a risky shot that was far more powerful than a usual panenka. He knew what he was doing but he took an extremly risky shot to avoid Buffon. Trezeguet tried the exact same thing in the shootouts and it ended up costing France the game. That's how fear inducing Buffon was as a keeper.
@@M..n..M Zidane's penalty was absolutely a panenka. The idea that Zidane deliberately hit it on the bar is completely inaccurate. What Zidane was going for was something that looked more like Benzema's panenka vs Man City: a high chip down the middle of the goal. Benzema's panenka itself actually goes rather close to the crossbar; but due to adrenaline probably, Zizou unintentionally puts a bit more into it, such that it actually does end up hitting the bar. But if you look at the way the ball is hit, it is definitely a chip. Meanwhile , trezeguet just tried to whack the ball into the top left corner but hit the crossbar. Just like Zidane vs Brazil can't be adequately appreciated by quantitative stats, neither can Pirlo's performances vs Germany of France. He sought the ball constantly, orchestrating everything, and came up big when it mattered. His assist for Grosso in 119' minute against the hosts, Germany, in a stadium in which they'd never lost, to win the semi-final of the WC, was a moment of true inspiration. Three perfect corner-kick deliveries, one assisting Materazzi, another seeing Toni hit the crossbar, allowed Italy back into the Final in direct response to France taking the lead. Pirlo was Italy's calmest performer on the night, and stepped up to score the first penalty in the shootout. Legend.

Italy beat Ukraine 3-0, and Germany 2-0 leading into that match. They had a dominant defense but they played very creative calcio through Andrea Pirlo and strong attacking depth. I’m surprised Tifo would remember them as drudging their way through. The “prop” claim is just pure revisionist history. After Italy knocked off Germany, there were a lot of people who thought Italy was the stronger side. They certainly played a better semi final than France did.
@@miked2075 i never pretented italy didnt deserve but scoring in 119' still means it was a hard fought victory. France scoring in the 30' , so rather early, changed the phisionomy. they still didnt let portugal with more than 50% of the ball. You can tell whatever but scoring early will always alter further play, we will never know what would have happened, just know france had the quality for any scenario
@@tayloryoung9803 your memory of this is little skewed. Do you think your judgement might be clouded because of your bias toward France? Portugal won the possession battle in that semi final. They also registered 6 targeted shots while France only managed 2 from open play. That france team only scored 3 goals in the quarter final, semi final, and final combined. Two of them were from penalties. Not exactly great goal scoring form. In that same span Italy managed 6 goals and none of them were from penalties. Zidane was a great player. But his fans love for him has created this revisionist history. The 2006 Italy team was a stronger side. After the semi final the French commentator said “Le Bleus will go to their second final. They didn’t make it easy for themselves with a distinctly average semi final “
3:56 It’s tempting to say things were “inevitable” after they’ve already happened, but that’s not always true. I think it was *not* inevitable that Zidane would physically hurt Materazzi and be sent off. If Zidane made it until the second half of extra time without doing that, then he easily *could* have made it another 15 minutes. It was a combination of bad luck and split-second decisions by both men that made their notorious clash take place. But choices and bad luck are both things that conceivably *could* have gone differently. Anyway, my point is: “the inevitable clash” you mention at 3:57 was probably not so *inevitable* after all.
Still the best World Cup for me. Italy were excellent throughout the tournament. Strong from defence to attack. Italy didn’t ground their way through the tournament at all. Only the Australia game where Italy had to dig deep (Materazzi sent off) being down to 10 men. Easily dispatched Ukraine 3-0 in the quarters, Germany just went for it in the semis, but Italy the superior team and could have won it in 90 minutes really. The final was even. And Malouda dived, was never a penalty. The correct team won the tournament.
That Italy team was brilliant, and the way Materazzi managed to neutralise Zidane was iconic. It wasn't' just what he said, it was the fact that Zidane was angry by that point because of Materazzi's effort.
You presented it as a very sad thing, honestly the pic of him walking past the World Cup goes hard. He's like 'I already have one of these anyway' I thought it was a memorable and dramatic end to his career. And ultimately it probably didn't have much influence on the outcome of the game considering it was just minutes from penalties
It’s hard to know, but especially before penalties, seeing your captain and leader leaving the pitch will definitely have taken a toll the players’ psyche. Plus he is a reliable shooter that wasn’t there to shoot. Who knows, with him the outcome would’ve been the opposite

I had a few thought yesterday whilst watching the match about two other finals. Firstly, how France yesterday seemed to turn up in a daze and play very similarly to the Brazil side in the 1998 final for the first 80 minutes. Secondly, my thoughts inevitably turned to the other recent final which was their last appearance for their country - the 2006 Zidane final. I thought it fitting that Messi lifted the World Cup, a symbolism of winning everything possible. I also thought Zidanes departure in that final was quite Zidane like - he did have a nasty side which did appear now and again.
Zidane was always heavily overrated, during his entire career I never got what people saw in him. He was quite unimpressive and only stood out because France's team was mostly built on defense, not on technical skills. But compared to the rest of football, he was rather unremarkable, there were far more gifted and fascinating players around at that time.
Would have been nice to actually go into what was said, and how the officials missed the call, but saw it on replay in the stadium and showed the red anyway. Was never a fan of France, but after that shameful display from Zidane, they earned themseleves a lifelong opposition from me. Along with Suarez's WC bite and my dislike of Uraguay to this day.
I don't know how many of you actually heard about this, but the referee (Argentinian Elizondo) said that the 4th referee told him through his earpiece something along the lines of "Draw a red card, do it, believe me, it was brutal". Elizondo took in consideration that people wouldn't understand the red card since he wasn't looking when Zidane headbutted Matterazzi. So he went next to the (also Argentinian) linesman who would've seen this, told him "Hey, you're doing great" to make it look like that linesman told him about the headbutt (and not to place publicly the guilt of the linesman for not paying attention to that particular play) and he drew the red card that sent Zidane to the showers. By the way... SOMOS CAMPEONES PAPAAAAA. VAMOS ARGENTINA!!! 🇦🇷 🏆 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Messi surpassed goat status now anyway
Just like Platini said What Zidane can do with the ball Maradona can do with an Orange.

Italy:We will this World Cup
Zindane:you might, but I’ll take you down with me!
Italy doesn’t get to the knockout stage ever again in the world cup
this year's final was great but watching the 06 final is something i'll never forget. for me it's unlikely to ever be surpassed
I agree I was 6 year old and i didn't watch the final but my father and grandfather were talking about it and it had so much drama with him head butting Matterazi.
Sorry, 2006 was my favourite final that I watched but 2022 has definitely surpassed it
Ranked WC finals that I’ve seen..
1. 2022
2. 2006
3. 2018
4. 2002
5. 2014
6. 2010
@@vb2388 a solid list, and to each their own. if i'd watched '22's in different circumstances i'm sure i'd feel the same way; but the combination of two teams stacked with legends, the quality of the whole match, the insanity of zidane going out that way, where i happened to be in life at the time... gonna be hard for one to top 06
youre probably living in nostalgia
@@srilankansavage2573 and? all of this is subjective and i basically said as much myself
They certainly played a better semi final than France did.
they scored against germany at 120', literally 2 goals in dying moments before pens. France scored early vs portugal and controlled
@@tayloryoung9803 they actually didn’t control it. Italy got two goals from open play France only converted a penalty.
@@tayloryoung9803 it was extremely hard fought. And it was a great match. But they didn’t drudge through it.
They didn’t make it easy for themselves with a distinctly average semi final “
whys a blue old trafford in the intro?

Materazzi got what he deserved!!!.

This story makes me so happy 😊
Tifo football, not sure if you will see this, but can you please, please create a video on Messi's goat status as he has won a wc finally 😅🙏♥️
There's that stat that when playing together for France Zidane only assisted Thierry Henry twice.
Henry was overrated for France. People say Messi didn't turn up for Argentina, Henry was worse.
@@AbdurRahman-mb1vr he's their second highest scorer of all time
Not overshadowed in the slightest if you're Italian. 🤷
Why is there a blue Old Trafford in the background at the beginning of the video?
I thought there would be more to the video than shown.
The correct team won the tournament.
really? what about that blatant dive in the Australia game? are you gonna mention that too?
@@jonasm6540 lol. Blatant dive…you keep telling yourself that

I remember before the game the camera showed Zidane putting his socks on with a cigarette in his mouth

The mockery is people remember who's Materazzi cuz of this incident.
That Italy team was brilliant, and the way Materazzi managed to neutralise Zidane was iconic. It wasn't' just what he said, it was the fact that Zidane was angry by that point because of Materazzi's effort.
I want to see Zizou, As coach of the France
We all do!
You presented it as a very sad thing, honestly the pic of him walking past the World Cup goes hard. He's like 'I already have one of these anyway'
I thought it was a memorable and dramatic end to his career.
@@battistoberhoel8839 Messi missed his starter penalty in one of the lost Copa America finals against Chile, if I remember in 2016 hosted in the US.
Immediately after he missed the whole team moral plummeted and everyone was in shock bcs *how could messi (the superstar) would miss a penalty in a shootout during a final*
So yes after seeing that game I can really tell you that teams have leaders and if they make a mistake as dramatic as these then the whole team suffers.
When will you do analysis on Scaloni's football?
France is proud of its black, Arab, white, Asian, wherever citizens. France is a different country.
2006 wasnt the most recent time they appeared in the final.. they won it in Russia.
99% hit🤣🤣🤣
🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹!!!.
"99% chance to hit."
All XCom players know that's bad news.
Couldn't find that lasagne recipe🤔
sooooo, Zidane won't manage France at least until Euro 2024, where will he go now ?
💚
We know what happened. We want to know what Mattarazzi said 🙄
Materazzi said something about Zidanes sister
Ask Marcelo Lippi.
This was a Mickey Mouse description of what actually took place, but okay.
How would you describe it?
One of the greatest in the pitch and outside the pitch, he easily could could be the GOAT if Messi isn't around.
That Zidane vs Brazil Match😭😭😭😭🔥🔥 If we didn't know we'd say he was the only Brazilian on that pitch that day😍😍😍
Would have been nice to actually go into what was said, and how the officials missed the call, but saw it on replay in the stadium and showed the red anyway.
Was never a fan of France, but after that shameful display from Zidane, they earned themseleves a lifelong opposition from me. Along with Suarez's WC bite and my dislike of Uraguay to this day.
Still a legend
What is Bloortech tho? 😅
Zidane headbutts matterazi for family. He is a true gentle man. Fifa world cup isnt something that is important to him. It is family
