I made this video to help myself and any other artist or creative person navigate what seems to be a complicated route to their identity as an artist. Are you a 'filmmaker' - What does this mean? Are you an Artist? Are you an actor or UA-camr? Is one more qualified than the other based on a title?
I called up 4 UA-camrs: Casey Neistat, Peter McKinnon, Sam Kolder and Sara Dietschy. As well as 4 multi award winning film directors: Salomon Ligthelm, Tristan Holmes, Zwelethu Radebe and Jolynn Minnaar and posed the offensive statement "Filmmaking is NOT art" to evoke a passion driven response that in turn helped me to understand that there is no separation between a titled film director, UA-camr or artist, one shouldn't focus on what is or isn't art, its rather about your motive behind creating in the first place and how much you're willing to compromise. BUT the artists in the video say it much better than my description so I hope you get something meaningful out of it Bru!
Have a great holiday season and I'll see you on the other side! Lots of Love

This was put together SO well! Dan! You beast!!!!! Always inspiring my friend! Miss ya!
We want to see that commercial you did 🤩
Yeah...Dan Mace is the reason why I didn't quit UA-cam: through our talk together he inspired me a lot and gave me strength to keep making videos even in very difficult situations...by the way..hey Peter! I love your videos...how many people have already told you that you are their inspiration? Well...I am definitely one of them! if there's anything I could do for you in terms of collabs just count me in! ..Peace!!
Oh captain my captain 🏴☠️
Haha, thanks bru! And thank you for being a part of this!
Peter ...Dan ...filmmaking is the highest form of arts imo !
You need every form of art , before a movie or video is considerd *ART*
Hell yeah, I love your videos. Filmmaking is definitely an art form. It makes people cry, it makes people angry... it creates emotions and in the end to me art is about emotions.
I loved the part about the film makers from set / youtube film maker comparison. Idk why we hate or dislike one another. More good can come out when we are open hearted and learning with one another...!
Well put bru!
Awesome video, Dan! Love the variety of perspectives and the creative editing. I think you're on to something that traditional media and youtube will eventually blend into something new. And congrats on the new opportunity! If Discovery+ is still looking for more creators, I'd love to get involved in some way. I always try to put a good story first, but it's tough going with the UA-cam algorithm promoting drama + clickbait. All the best for 2021 bru 👍
sort of going through a creative block, I feel that I relate to your content most. Hope you don't take too long to post, Happy New Year Dan!
"To evoke emotion is a true art form in its self" - Zwelethu Radebe 🔥
All the very best on your new endeavor Dan, Multi-Platform at Discovery, the name alone is meant for you, bru. 🎬👊
Amazing vid bru. Good luck in your new venture. Loved Jeremy Loops at the end
The Jeremy Loops outro❤❤❤ Made me smile. Love that dude.
Anyways. Good luck in your next endeavor bru.
Miss you already, Bru. Congrats on the news. Beyond well deserved, and wishing you every happiness and success as this next chapter unfolds before you. You’re awesome, Bru, enjoy your break! Ps. Hopefully you get to take in some of the WSL Hawaii events during you time off (your man Jordy sounds like he’s ready for a huge season - maybe there’s room for this new partnership, and Casey, and and and to document the new finals event at Lowers in some way?)
Love to see you back! One thing I noticed, that I wished you would have elaborated on: all of them say (to some extent) that filmmaking indeed IS art, but how many of them call them selves artists? Why/why not?
Clickbate IS NOT art... but your videos are and you’re amazing
6:42 this is the real story of my life in a sentence. I don't know who are you man but you touched my heart. I love you man. I nearly cried, it's so deeply interrelated. I really want the good of the world and always avoid the bad. Filmmaking is not my job, not my passion. I would say it's my life, and I am lucky to find my true niche. I am 15 years old. Thanks for reading.
My favourite of yours so far Dan, keep up the good work!!
Congratulations, I hope this brings you and Gabby much happiness and of course Joey. Thanks for all the positive amazing content you've been providing us for the past couple years and helping other small creators like myself realize you don't have to make everyone happy as long as you're making yourself happy..Merry Christmas 🎅 Bru
Filmmaking is DEFINITELY an art! The way it can impact your emotions is just phenomenal.
you're right. thanks dan. you've been so inspirational for us small creators. I think one day we can look back at the history of UA-cam and we can learn from your perspective to help the future
Wait aminute...You shot in Kenya, for Tusker!! Man that was fuego!!
So many of my heroes on this video. Thank you all for inspiring me and other filmmakers to realise there IS a place for us in UA-cam x
YESS and you WILL reach their height if you keep at it. Love your vids Diego 💞
You’re also a good example of filmmaking and youtube combined ❤️
Checked your channel and now I simp. Subbed luv

love to see your growth dan, hopefully I can figure my path out like you have
All the best Bru! You're gonna rock Discovery+ ! Cant wait to catch back up in a month.
Thank you for being an artist and UA-camr! enjoy the holidays!!
Stick and mud is the biological parent of visual art.
Filmmaking is One of the greatest art!
Happy Holidays🎄🎅!! Congradulations bru. Looking forward to your content.
Thank you for this, it's what I needed to hear. Also, congrats on your exciting new project! That's awesome bru!
I am genuinely happy and proud for you even if I don’t actually know you. You are a filmmaking beast, a true artist and a good man overall. In short: YOU’RE AWESOME BRU!
Congrats! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with Discovery+
I've always had this idea to have a platform where youtube filmmakers and traditional filmmakers can share real stories with real people. It came from my confused passion for filmmaking. I knew I wanted to be a storyteller through video, but a combination of what is traditionally known as a filmmaker and a UA-camr. From what I'm hearing, that is exactly what your project is about.
@Dan Mace if you are reading this, I'm a starting filmmaker who would love to work with you or even intern to learn more about this filmmaking and this project.
Good luck Dan! Looking forward to what this path allows you to create!
what a phenomenal video idea! Love seeing differing opinions, especially Peter
Interesting how the "professionals" mainly think that it's not black and white while the "UA-camrs" think it's art.
Would be interesting to investigate why that is.
It's because they have a better understanding of what is "art"
Probably because they've work on big commercial sets to make living, where the purpose of a lot of this "art" is to make money; whereas UA-camrs pretty much do what they want and build an audience from that.
It’s cool to see Casey neistat in this clip
Hell ya! Discovery+ is on my list right when it drops. You rocking on Discovery+ is even a bigger reason for me to keep it!
So great, thought-provoking, and well explained as always. Congrats on the new chapter, Dan!
WHERE DO I SUSCRIBE TO DISCOVERY+ GIVE ME A LINK! xD
Great Dan just great! Very interested how you make your storytelling I'm really amazed.
Discovery+ sounds awesome bru.
Please keep being in UA-cam I following ya just few months since you gave interview for Russian sabatovskiy production.
Appreciate your job a lot, have a great rest and see ya! BRUuuuu
My art theory professor defined art as the right making of the thing. A spreadsheet can be art. I really feel we’re getting bogged down in semantics. Which is likely ironic since it’s all about meaning regardless of the labels we accept or employ,
I noticed on the Discovery Plus Website , its not available in our Region, South Africa , mmmm hopefully soon,
Congratulations Dan you deserve it, your such a big inspiration keep on keeping on
this is a great discussion. would love to hear a long form conversation on this from you
You're awesome bru, have a great Christmas and New Year!
What an amazing video/movie Dan!! Very inspiring for thoes wanting to get in to film making.
Man I really liked this. So well done!
Bro..your editing is on a GOD level....sheeeeessshhh
BRU ❣️ love your approach of presenting the most complicated question and give good conclusion love you #BRU #DAN #ART #CREATIVE
God speed Dan! I cant wait to see you succeed in your next big adventure in life. You're awesome Bru!
love the Mr Loops at the end
Congratulations and good luck man!, wish you a world of success!
Dan's going big-time and we're all here waiting for video for free. Good luck, 'cause I can't be paying for any more streaming subscriptions.
ive wanted to see something like this for years but also didn't realize I wanted to watch this until I saw it
Well done bru! I could see the emotions run.....
You make my day sir. thank you for this discussion.. i am emancipated and motivated.. trully..
Filmmaking can be art, not all filmmaking is art.
Painting can be art, not all painting is art
Music can be art, not all music is art.
The question is not if filmmaking is art or not. The question is if Casey, Peter and the likes are Filmmakers or videographers.
If everything is a film, nothing is a film.
Photography - Videography, is art... If it moves something with in others who view it or hear it.... That, is art... No argument.
Best wishes... Follow your heart. Your fans enjoy your work.. Can't wait to hear how things went over next month for you in your next video.
Congrats Dan! Epic journey ahead.
Film is definitely art and it inspires so many other forms of art! Great video!
Is software engineering an art?
Yes and no.
Yes, because there is inherent creativity and innovation in every project I do.
No, because 90% of the tasks are mundane and repetitive.
Same goes with everything in including filmmaking. It has two sides. You can look at one or the other, but both will exist.
If Dan Mace called me up and asked this. I'd reply 'wait, is it Science?'
Then I realised it could be anything actually. Art, Science, Technology or whateverrrrrr because only a combination of all of these disciplines puts together a 'film'
Filmmaking is not art. Art is what you produce with filmmaking.
Filmmaking is such an art! #respect
Edit: Congrats bru! Enjoy the holidays and stay safe! ✌🏼
Your montage in that wideo is ART!
How well can can a iPhone pro film turn out?

1st of all- CONGRATS- you deserve it, Dan!!!
Not sure why all the drama about a very simple question. Of course film making is art. I write, sing, and play guitar at a very high level, and when I started dabbling in film making, the creativity came from the very same place- deep within myself. Heart. Soul. Spirit. Whoever say it isn't art is simply not a true artist. A true artist knows where the inner creativity is coming from, a non artist cannot discern that. You're welcome.
Congrats danoooooo all the best for the new venture
Why would one want to tell their stories on a paid for (not confirmed) platform like Discovery plus instead of on a more community driven platform like UA-cam which has the potential to draw more traffic from across the world. Genuinely interested to find out. Not trying to shutdown the potential of a new platform. Congrats on the new opportunity.
If someone tells me that filmmaking is not an art i would say ( then make a film yourself.
Dan did you sing the song at the end?
Congrats on your new journey which is the continuation of your brilliant path of fighting for what you love and are great at doing.
Filmmaking is Art and beyond.
Discovery has got a great FilmMaker, Idea thinker, Project Manager, Writer and more in their hands.
Congrats once again, now they got another subscriber just 'case of you.
Keep up and keep creating and always smiling.
See you in the productions.

editing in this video was unreal bru 😮
To say filmmaking is not is art is like saying music (songwriting, composing, etc.) or poetry is not art. As Casey said, art is any kind of expressing yourself that can accurately express your ideas to an audience in a way that can be fully appreciated and understood by said audience. Stephen King is as much an artist as William Shakespeare. When Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sat down to write what are considered to be two of the greatest speeches of all time, "The Gettysburg Address" and "I Have A Dream", they became artists. When Francis Ford Coppola created the revolutionary "The Godfather" he became an artist. It takes an artist to create masterpieces and you guys do that often.
The ‘godfather’ of UA-cam film making is a well deserved title for Casey.
Totally agree
Even father wouldn't have been far fetched
Yep, very.
Have a look at my channel - I’ve created a series of my own short films inspired by Casey Neistat!
“To evoke emotion is an art form itself” that’s pretty mind blowing. Thank you Zwelethu!
Totally agree Bru
@@DanMace I'm so excited for your project bru! Definitely gonna subscribe to it
If I shout at you, I'll evoke an emotion, but that isn't art. I think a more interesting question about a work is 'is it successful or not?'. Whether something is art seems to be almost a redundant question imo.
Look at me I create art!
You're job as an artist is to evoke emotion, with whatever your chosen medium. When you can do that, it is generally agreed that it's elevated to art. If it's good or bad is subjective, and as a result irrelevant to whether or not it's art. A conversation that's been going on for thousands of years, and I imagine will continue.
it is art. "i don't have to explain my art to you" -Dan Mace
Filmmaking is NOT Art..
Filmmaking is a SPORT 😎
- CASEY NEISTAT 😎
kold sent me here
And it is totally an art. Sure, it's heavily problem-solving, but art nonetheless.
Programming is art for that matter.
Great comparison!!
How'd he send you here?

“No one would argue a baby crying isn’t expressing itself... but you wouldn’t call it art.” Bill Evans
Exactly! Good point.
Did Bill Evans actually say this?
great quote nonetheless
I think some of you are missing the point- nobody in this video is simply suggesting that self expression is art.
@@whitedandelion9765 I’m pretty sure he/she wasn’t referring to anyone in the video. The commenter just put in his/her two cents and shared a quote relevant to the subject.
@@loganthorpe2013 yes... there’s a video of him playing at someone’s house and they interview him after. I’ll try to find the link.
Incredible video, Dan. Excited to see what you and Discovery create
Same here!
"Art" is just a label. Do what you love and don't let anyone hinder you.
*I love how you combined most of my favorite Filmmaker!*
So Peter finally got his Ford partnership... Good for him!

False, actually ;)
It is funny @Peter McKinnon actually responded to this comment. Ford is going to be kicking themselves for this one.
"Film making is not art" says the people who don't make videos 🤔
IMO filmmaking is the godfather of art. It includes almost every element of the arts. From writing, acting, score to color grading all is art. Every frame of a film is like wallpaper/painting.
"Anything that moves you is art." - The great Shia Lebeouf
I'm so glad I work for a moving company.... I'm an artist now
A guy shoved me to the side when walking past me. That’s what I call art.
Jokes aside, I somewhat agree, but I’d rather say that you can turn it into art by putting it into a certain perspective.
man I like your editing but..(and this has nothing to do with you), sometimes I feel like this world is getting too much stimulation.
”Anything that moves you, is art”
-Shia Labeouf
Before you can answer the question if filmmaking is art:
DEFINE ART....
That may be impossible, this question has been posed and debated since the beginning of philosophy. There are many answers, I would say some more correct than others, but the pursuit is half of the infatuation.
@@isaacwhite3396 Exactly.
So, if art can't be defined, how can film making not be art? Everything is art in its own way.
If it evokes any type of emotion from you then it's art.
@@heretocreatefilms That makes everything art? Could be plausible.
Something made to evoke fealings, of beauty or even horror. If that is art? Does it mean murder is art I hope not.
Filmmaking is definately an art otherwise how it is able to inspire and put accross a pot at the same time.
I am a 32 year old software engineer guy just started my UA-cam channel. You and all other UA-cam shown in videos are inspiration to me.
All you guys inspire us to create videos and have fun with this platform.
Would you consider software engineering an art too or not?
I was just thinking of it now while reading you comment. It made me wonder, cause you do create software. Right?
@@Leprutz it is an art imo
@@dom-fy6kr Programming too, can be an art right? How would you explain your opinion to others... Like what are the points that make it an art, in your opinion?
Yes I do consider software engineer an art.
Languages and algorithms are my paint and brush.
The only difference is I can just go on and update this art to make is better.😜
Sorry I forgot to switch my profile before commenting. This is shivay as well
The word " COMPROMISE " really stuck to me. It's like the painfull truth.
As a filmaker you create films that tell/narrate a story, the way you do so is For YOU To Chose, so the real question is...
" HOW WILL YOU/I DO IT ? ".how will i tell this story?
We ask ourself this question because, at the begining of every story there is an idea, which isn’t real, because IT STARTS IN YOUR HEAD.
At this point, the story or idea is imaginary and TO BE ABLE TO SHARE IT, you must let it out of your head,by one way or another; as A Film, A Painting, An Animation, whatever it is.
THAT IS WHERE YOU ARE CONFRONTED WITH " COMPROMISE ".
To this compromise people either don't see it (due to experiance for ex. ) and some people are completely punched in the face, but still manage to push through but some (me) are RKO-ed to doom ( and either don't start or finish telling their story) as the reality does not meet their imagination/fantasy that was in their head.
To this, I believe is a solution, to ask yourself "What Works?" beacause that is compromise .
The expedient acceptance of standards that are lower than is desirable. - Google definitions
AND yet this video is beautifull !!!! thank you for reading to this point I really appreciate it!!
Casey, Peter, and Dan my 3 favorite UA-cam creators in one video!
I think what Tristan Holmes said, nails it: "Focusing on what is art and what isn't art is kind of a distraction."
Congratulations on Discovery +.
Yeah agreed
Making a video is not filmmaking. People need to learn what the word "film" means before they use it.
Awesome stuff Bru!! Loved this.
As a UA-camr, this is the first video that has made me feel like I can call myself a filmmaker and not feel weird about it. I love it.
no one:
bru: before we get started, let me talk about story blocks
Minute 3:58 - to evoke emotion, it's an art expression on it's own.
Glad to see you having this opportunity, Dan. You so deserve it!
Unbelievable! 😱 Thanks for piecing this gem together! So very inspirational!
