When I was a kid it was still allowed to have a fire like that. The nails won't melt, but they are not too hard to collect. Put a magnet inside a bucket, and just go with the bucket across the ash pile, and when you take the magnet out of the bucket you can drop all the nails all at once into another bucket. Inside an old hard drive you can find two strong neodymium magnets. If you combine them then those will do the job. 👍
