The port buses you out of the port and it is a 15 minute walk to the old town. There's plenty to see and do once you get there. The archaeological museum is fantastic. And there are city buses that take you to Knossos or a beach trip to Ammoudara beach. I learned about all of this from other UA-cam videos.
