That is the perfect song for the birds being happy in the background, and Belina and the other chickens hanging out with you! Love the wheelbarrow and straw too!😂 Glad you're feeling better!
Many people try to say this as a braggadocious type thing but you must realize that almost every single person who ever did music did it by ear before the notes were written down and put into words😂
"Crack a cold one!" 😂 I've found that sometimes near the edges of being/getting over a cold, sometimes your brain can be a little unfocused, which I find sometimes lets me not overthink playing music. It makes the Feel play more. *shrug* What do I know? I'm old, and it's early on the Right Coast. Just in my second cup of coffee. The mic must be good. The birds were audible, even a little loud, the whole time but the banjo voice came through right out front.
I’m glad to hear you are over your cold! I’ve always wondered what this song would sound like on the banjo, but I never looked it up! It’s so sweet so many people are sending you so many nice hats!!! 🦔🌷🤍
Beautiful place you have there with the flowers and the farm animals... time to relax Phoebe... a couple of beers and you can sing to us about any topic... don't worry, you can't even grab the chicken anymore! :D
I was just about to miss Fretless Friday this week until you finally posted Phoebe! So happy to see you getting better after that cold. Cheers and take care!
Nice rendering of Country Roads! My "trick" for trying to find the right chords is try to play the melody and see which notes seems more important. They are probably eihther the chord base of the three or five in the chord at that part of the melody. Then just play those "guesstimated" chords and try to hear if and where something sounds wrong and try to fix it.
John Denver would be honored! Thanks for sharing! FYI: The chords for the bridge ("I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me ...."): Em - D - G ; C - G - D ; Em - F - C- G; D .... D7. As for hearing the right chords, it's just that you have to listen and practice. And listen especially to the same instruments that you play, yourself.
Your fretless playing is very cool, and the chubby birds walking around too! For identyfying chord changes what worked for me was to listen and learn a lot of music, so you can relate the intervals on the chord changes between the diferent pieces. Greetings from Argentina!
omg that's all I drink now(bubbly soda)grew up chugging sugary and corn syrupy unhealthy concoctions and trying to reverse that trend, awesome good for you, and is good for you also.
My Dad taught me by ear. Now today, my teacher says I have a remarkable ear. So in pursuit of patience, I will put prayer to you practice. As you embrace listening for chords, the facility for re-creation on the neck will, I promise, incrementally build until it all opens up when the boys and I arrange a new song for worship, we have a good ol' time hearing in our minds and bring consensus, accord, lol to our charts. Keep picking! Sounded great!
I find myself slightly envious of your surroundings - though mine aren't at all bad (Colorado). I love that you are a huge fan/player of 'porch music '.....me too! Kudos, and I love your feed on here!
Adding this to the plethora of covers of this song I have saved in my favs on here. Such an emotion spuring song and I'm glad you added your take to it. Sorry you were sick and glad you are feeling better. Keep hydrated and safe JIC though. Also, I agree. Awesome outfit in general and for recovering. You look so cozy. 💛 I need to say ..never been to West Virginia but I don't need to to tear up at this. Cali has always been home but I think that's the main unifyer for this. Just makes you reminisce about that comfort and what home is to you. Also my parents are from upstate New York originally and we used to visit every summer growing up. It was very rural out where my grandparents lived. An old farm on the side of the mountain. Nearest neighbors are a half mile away and those are relatives. Forest borders the clearing the house is built on on one side and resumes across the road on the other. Two lanes and no enforces speed limits. At the very bottom is a swamp with mud dwelling fish and an abandoned railway running through we offroaded on once. There's a small pond out past the barn. The area is pitted with cold water running gorges and cataracts. My grandmother and parents met in the one room schoolhouse in the town over. The house was built by my grandfather between my grandmother's parents house and her brother's house. My grandfather's family farm is visible across the valley on the side of the mountain opposite. I've only been maybe once in almost 20 years. I do miss it a lot at times and this song really captures that sentiment.
Querida Phoebe. Me alegra que estés mejor del resfriado. Muy bueno Country Roads. Espero que sigas buen y me encanta el pollo negro es re simpático. Saludos 🪕🎶✨️🇦🇷
I only played single note instruments so I can play a melody by ear but mystified about chords. Sorry, no help. Thanx Phoebe, your garden looks great. Martin London UK
Great fretless today! Your audio/video tools are great. Couldn’t even tell you were being backlit because your tones looked good. Audio nice and clear as well.
Great Fretless Friday this week ! Great song choice played beautifully. I've made the jump from clawhammer ukulele and just purchased a 5 string Banjo so any learning tip would be great. I'm going to enjoy the journey 🎉
Wanna know my Friday night routine?? Sip some tea, eat popcorn and graham crackers, and.... watch Phoebe Sanders. I love your playing, I love seeing your smile, it makes me look forward to Friday night so much. Thanks you , p.s I loved this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How old are you anyway??
I found that I play guitar much better when I become part of the song. It's hard to describe, but when I end the song, my heart is going like crazy! When I just play it without emotion, it's not as good.
We often have sessions where we play three or four Denver tunes in a row after someone asks for One.... McCarthy AK used to have a Denver Folk Festival every summer after he came for a visit. Don't know if they started it back up since the plague. Chords will come with playing often.
Thank you, Phoebe. I just remembered playing 'Country Roads' on guitar in an Elective Class in High School. We played chords. You played the melody. I like your version better. Long time, no see with Squidward. The Sparrows provided fair backup for volunteers. Take your vitamins. Eat nutritious food. Get regular exercise. Stay hydrated. Get plenty of rest. Be Well.
I can't hear chords either. I suspect that with the most perfectly patient coach taking me through it at my own pace, MAYBE I could get there, but meanwhile... nope. I mean, I HEAR them, but I don't recognize them by name/function. Still, good to have goals - keep us posted as you do more with that. Also, while I can recognize melodies by ear, my ear is notoriously sloppy and when I need to actually transcribe something accurately (like from a youtube video) I a) slow it down and b) go over bits of it, singing the notes, sometimes counting up or down step by step! But I LIKE it, so I keep at it!
Hearing the chords just takes practice, to train your "ear" (brain). Rick Beato has an ear training course that can help with hearing intervals, chords, etc. Happy that you are recovering from your recent affliction. Happy Fretless Friday! :-D
Good stuff! Don't know anything about chords but I am a photographer and know something about composition and lighting. The lighting and presentation was fine on my end. Great background singers too!
After I get done editing, I've watched my video so many times that I don't want to watch it again for a while. When my viewers ask questions on videos, I did 3 or 4 years ago and have to watch it again to see what they are asking sometimes.
to be heard Saturday 11/16/24 on Radio Soleil (2-6 pm) with Toots Hibbert "Country Roads" from "A Reggae Session" we are from Little Haiti, Brooklyn, N Y
Phoebe, you're being awfully dangerous with playing all my favorites as of late. I think it's settled, you're making this guitar player go and find a banjo. This also makes me wonder how City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie would sound on the fretless. God Bless and thank you for all you do!
So happy you're feeling better and you sounded great this Fretless Friday as usual you lifted my spirits and made my weekend look brighter. It is hard to hear the chords while you are playing, A suggestion - tape yourself then listen for the chord changes.
That’s a great song, one of my favorite by John Denver. Reminds me of my childhood riding in my dad old truck, now a days I listen to his music on my Bluetooth speaker on my tractor. By chance do you know Rocky Mountain high? Thanks again.
So glad you are feeling better, Doc! Great dose! Have you taken a class in music theory? Learning the relationship between chords may help you better identify them by ear. I have to go back and watch some of the longer videos you have done lately. It has been a busy time for me. I love what you do and love you, Doc! God bless you and your family! ❤❤❤❤❤
I only have high school music theory, so I can't make any suggestions about how to identify chords by ear. The one channel that I'm familiar with is David Bennett Piano whose host teaches theory and also uses rock/pop/jazz to make chord changes familiar. He does a fair bit that hints at ear training without precisely stopping everything and saying, "This is an A major chord." You just hear chords, major, minor, augmented, diminished in real music and you can observe progressions as he shows and discusses things with sheet music onscreen while music plays. I recall that he pointed out some apps that are strictly for ear training, but they are subscription services.
You seem to like the guitar sound but prefer having a high drone string under your thumb. Put a 0.010 gauge string in place of that missing A string on your old guitar, take off the low E string that's currently under your thumb. If you like the sound, you could always have a luthier fit a custom banjo neck to an acoustic body. Would sound amazing, and I don't know that anyone's ever done it before. Instead of a hard switch to guitar, it would just be another banjo to add to your collection so you can enjoy making music with that resonant guitar body sound when you want without relearning everything.
you are special in the best way
Chirpin, cluckin & pluckin with lil miss Sanders 😊❤🎶
That was great Pheobe!
That is the perfect song for the birds being happy in the background, and Belina and the other chickens hanging out with you! Love the wheelbarrow and straw too!😂 Glad you're feeling better!
This just feels good 💯
Love the pretty sweater and hat. Nice playing, as usual.
As a West Virginia native I approve of this song. 👍
Woot! Fretless Friday is a tradition! Love it!
Great playing, such a pleasant voice, and a wonderful smile :)
Just watching you being happy is warming my heart...
I spent 30 years singing with top conductors and wonderful orchestras and nobody sussed that I did it all by ear. Get well Phoebe.
Many people try to say this as a braggadocious type thing but you must realize that almost every single person who ever did music did it by ear before the notes were written down and put into words😂
"Crack a cold one!" 😂

I love this song, love the birds, but most of all, I love the chickens! Great job!!👏

I’m glad to hear you are over your cold! I’ve always wondered what this song would sound like on the banjo, but I never looked it up! It’s so sweet so many people are sending you so many nice hats!!! 🦔🌷🤍
Been a while since I checked out your channel. Been fretting. Thanks for a fretless Friday.
Beautiful place you have there with the flowers and the farm animals... time to relax Phoebe... a couple of beers and you can sing to us about any topic... don't worry, you can't even grab the chicken anymore! :D
UA-cam needs more of stuff like this ❤
Total inspiration. Been sick since c19 off/on. But,im old now. Your claw B&G makes me smile, relax, remember.
kewl sweater
time for my weekly fix, and it is one of my favorites
and a favorite of my parents who met because of his banjo playing
👍🥰
I was just about to miss Fretless Friday this week until you finally posted Phoebe! So happy to see you getting better after that cold. Cheers and take care!
Ahhh! It’s finally Friday and I can stop fretting. Thanks, Phoebe. You’re a ray of sunshine ☀️
Thank you. You inspire me to play everyday.
Beautiful music, love the sound of banjo 🥰
Feliz viernes. suena maravilloso 👍👍🪕🎶👍👍una música muy linda, los pajaritos son el CORO
We were sick at the same time. lol the crud going around is no joke. Thanks for the song!
I love Sparrows sooooo much and you !🐓🐔❤

Very very nice!!!! Love it!
You're such a good player even your not-quites worked. Loved it. Thanks so much for sharing!
A productive convalescense! It sounds good. I like the drop thumb you work in.
No frets today. I'm off this weekend. Glad your better phoebe. Have a great weekend!
John Denver would be honored! Thanks for sharing! FYI: The chords for the bridge ("I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me ...."): Em - D - G ; C - G - D ; Em - F - C- G; D .... D7. The birds just add to the entire 'Country Roads' ambience. Glad you are feeling better.
Neat
Phoebe, I am glad you are feeling better. This song was played on the radio when I was a teenager so it is old and I love it!
I'm glad you're better.
The more I Listen The Better You Are. Lovely !
i like this phrase. :)
It's a beauty. Thank you.
Sorry to hear you were sick, glad you’re better now. Good job on the song. The sweater and the hat are really you. You look fabulous!!!
The birds go nicely with the Banjo! Hope you feel better soon.
thanks for the Fretless Friday Phoebe!
Wonderful
Love it!
Fantastic fun! Hi chickens, feel better Phoebe!

Great tempo for the instrument. Really cool version of this song. 😁
Life is tough, God is good...your setting is apropos and you are on the mend.
Blessings and Shalom in Him
Glad you're feeling better! I love Country Roads, and the bird choir in the background was singing along with gusto! ❤😅
I hear you, I've had covid all week and have been the same way! Hope you feel better!
Awesome sweater
Great song. Your birds!!
Очень симпатичное исполнение. ))
Выздоравливай, Фиби!

Banjo by Phoebe, backing vocals by the Byrds (birds). See what I did there? 😉 😀

The loudness of the birds is just right. But I love me some bird noise.
I'm a bird by the way.
The birds came through nicely !

I’ve had some of my best banjo practices when I’m sick. I think I worked on three different SawMill tunes when I was out of commission!

When I was a kid and all the other kids were outside playing football, I was inside practicing guitar. Now I can kick a guitar 60 yards.
