Possible spoiler alert! I have mixed feelings. abut this one but overall it's good. In the beginning the dialog seemed stilted and there was some lumpy (although well meaning) social conscious commentary about prisons. It sounded forced and unnatural to me. The prison scenes seemed realistic and when the action escape scenes started to unfurl the film got lively and was good. Overall the acting was fine At first I wondered about the casting against type of Hume Cronyn hut I've come around to thinking it an excellent choice. The final scene where Dr. Walters turns to the camera and says something like Why do they always try to escape, it never works I thought was bizarre and gratuitous Of note is the singer in jail. In real life he was a very famous calypso singer, Sir Lancelot. He appeared in some Hollywood movies , most notably I Walked With a Zombie where he sang Shame and Scandal in the Family (it has many different titles) , a song that has been covered countless times by different artists down through the years. You can hear his original; 78 rpm version on UA-cam. Dassin made some very good noirs such as Thieves'' Highway, The Naked City and the best one, Night and the City.
Jack Overman (Kid Coy) was my mother's second cousin and according to her had a beautiful singing voice. He would sing to her when he would visit when she was a young girl. Unfortunately because he was not a good-looking man he was never going to have a singing career so he became an actor. This was his biggest role before he died a few years later at 32.
You should give a second chance. It is really good film. Lancaster's character has a major role in the film which becomes apparent as the story unfolds. As Donny makes clear in his description, there is more than a bit of reality that inspired and influenced this film. also he makes it quite clear that this film was made with him to give a new star a breakout role and to use his name to draw in fans. Jules Dassin is not renowned for his violent sequences and as such this should be rewatched with this in mind.
Burt Lancaster is probably close to the top of a list of greatest all time Hollywood actors.
i would agree.
Film that everyone should see. Thanks Donny, for putting this up. Nice to see it in a decent rip too.
Glad you enjoyed it! Welcome.

Plenty of Hume Cronyn, though.
