Synopsis: Devastated to learn that their only son has been killed by muggers in New York City, former Headmaster B.B. Pradhan and his wife, Parvati, grieve. With their son dead, there is no source of income for the couple, so they rent out a room, in their Shivaji Park - Bombay apartment to a budding Bollywood actress, Sujata Suman, who has been having an illicit affair with the only son - Vilas of a politician named Gajanan Chitre. Vilas lacks the guts to tell his father that he is in love and would like to marry Sujata, and hence puts off any marriage plans. They do get intimate and as a result Sujata gets pregnant. When Pradhan finds out, he offers to take Sujata to meet Gajanan with the hope that he will permit her to become his daughter-in-law. But Gajanan not only refuses, he also threatens them, he warns them of dire consequences if Sujata does not abort the child, and moves away to another town. Pradhan refuses to let Sujata out of his house, and then begins the stalking and harassment by Gajanan's men. Pradhan goes to file a police complaint, but is told that the police cannot even touch Gajanan's men. Sujata has no choice but to continue to seek shelter with Pradhan and his wife. Sujata does not know that Pradhan and Parvati have a secret agenda of their own in keeping her within their sight.

Everyone has appraised Anupam Kher’s performance in this movie but totally forgot about Rohini Hattangari. She was as brilliant as Kher. So powerful and real
That's because Rohini Hattangadi is a critically acclaimed actress of her time who has given powerful performances in several complex art movies of the New Wave Cinema Movement!!! But my dear friend, gem of actresses like Rohini Hattangadi and such gem of movies always get very little appreciation. The majority of the crowd goes to watch the commercial movies!!!

the meaning of life is just go on. I literally in tears after watching this movie, how much painful for a parents whose young child will no more.
I saw this movie 30 years ago as a 24 years old. Telling you the truth did not understand much. May be the reason was all the hair were black and darkness had a grip on the head and now as a 50 plus the lights have lit with more grey hairs than the darkness. I could like most of others see the melodrama of life in black and white.
While writing this eyes are teary and emotions are hard to control.
Such a potent character played by Rohini and Anup ji. One of the best Art movie!!!

I was trying to feel the movie at every scene. This movie could help you feel emotions of a person without child at age of 60. At 28, i got the message. Life has no end. It goes on even after your death, so try to make life as easy as breathing.

Last year I almost lost my only child, he is good now. My wife's and my situation back then reminded me this movie a million times. Biggest sorrow for any parents is to lose their child.

That sentence brought tear to my eyes.

POWERFUL, POWERFUL, POWERFUL Movie!!!! Few realise what a POWERFUL and a DEEPLY PHILOSOPHICAL movie this is. Such a brilliant and a moving exploration of the existential philosophy of life with the themes of life and death and rebirth through poignant screenplay and soul-touching performances. A movie for a true intellectual and an immensely mature mind. The portrayal of Pradhan and Parvati's character is so moving and arouses such pathos for the old couple. Having said that I don't mean it is only for a particular age-group. Anyone of any age can watch it. Truly, this movie is a hidden gem even though it is low-budgeted. This movie is such a break and a breath of fresh air from that glamourized, blockbuster, Bollywood crap. None of that mawkish melodrama of the commercial Hindi Cinema. During the 1980s when actors like Amitabh Bachchan were busy making those testosterone action flicks, directors and filmmakers like Mahesh Bhatt were making movies such ARTH and SAARAANSH... My favorite scene is during the song 🎶🎵 "Dard kaa doossra naam hai zindagi" when Pradhan and Parvati are decided and all ready to commit suicide and end their lives and in just the next room Sujata is having a birthday party🎂🎉🎈 and she and her young friends are celebrating life. What an ironic and a sympathetic juxtaposition!!! Mahesh Bhatt is truly a remarkable filmmaker!!
