After years of playing this game as a kid, I was surprised to learn here that this game has issues with car handling and physics - as much as I agree on the difficulty being ruthless, I always found the driving physics very manageable. Besides, goofy unlocks for acing missions made it absolutely worth it. Drivable tank? - check. Aquatic world decorations that turned your guns into fish and people into scuba divers? - check. Rear wheel steering? - check. Voice actors (except John Bunnell) replaced with bored programmers shoving their fingers into their throats? - check.
Fun unrelated fact: did you know that the voice line about a "stolen police vehicle" in the menu theme tune is still in the game, albeit unused? It was supposed to be in one of few cut missions, this one with criminals hijacking a police car in the second half of it. There are also voice lines from a cut training mission, where you've been supposed to drive to various landmarks across the city to familiarize yourself with it - which I believe was removed due to freeroam mode making it redundant (which makes me believe freeroam mode was a late addition to the game). And voice lines from a cut game mechanic where if you shoot random traffic cars you're not supposed to be chasing, dispatcher calls you out and then sics other patrolling cars on you if you don't stop. Man, I really should document this stuff on TCRF.
I remember playing this game as a kid and thinking the graphics were super real! It's insane how we used to look at stuff way back when, but the graphics aren't bad at all for a late PS1 game.
Resi 2 and 3 were it for me.. I honestly didn't believe games _could_ get much more better looking than that 😂
1:42 "Unlike the Driver and Grand Theft Auto titles, because you play as a cop"
In Driver, you play as a cop.
im a bit late but in driver, you literally break the law and get in police chases (and in driv3r at least) you have the option to commit homocide to police and in this game youre simply an actual officer
(sorry if there was a joke I missed)
@@thetinman-1 It's not a joke. John Tanner (the character you play as in almost every Driver game) is an undercover police officer.
@@Vinicius_Berger yes but in driver you have the option to engage in police pursuits and in driv3r you have guns to literally kill your colleagues which doesnt make sense as tanner is an officer himself whereas in WSPC you simply chase other vehicles
point is, I know tanner is also an officer but he kills people in his own workplace
I had this game growing up and I did enjoy it. Coming from watching "World's Wildest Police Videos", when I saw this game pop up in a gaming magazine, I just had to play it. I appreciate the fact that they got Sheriff John Bunnell to provide commentary for the game.
Loved that show. Sheriff bunnell got famous cuz of that show and his arrest of oj
I used to watch that show every time it came on TV.
I was so excited when it was released, it took so long for me to rent cause it was always picked over at blockbuster, so much fun playing the coop with dad. Amazing game for ps1
There's no way I would have ever even known this game existed it wasn't for this review. Honestly the game looks so quaint I think I'm actually going to emulate it after this video. Thanks for the review 🙏
Emulator's overclocking features could help it I guess.
@@rodsk8dude731 Yes and I can't afford to hunt down the game and console needed to play it.
I remember this game super fondly. One of the first ones I had when I got my PS1 as a kid.
Same here. I think it was the second game I got for the PS1. I got so so angry when I spent 10 minutes on a mission just to fail. But looking back, it's in the top 5 of my favourite games ever
This is a certified classic. The main theme still slaps.
So glad you covered this, I loved this game as a kid. It was the only game then and still might be the only game now where the police cars have realistic automatic transmission shifting. The way it would downshift and go into high RPM only after high throttle inputs greatly added to the realism
Man I had forgotten all about this! The car crash sfx were sick.
oh, this i wasn’t expecting but i’m so happy you reviewed this game cause i would binge watch the show all the time 😆
Had this game when growing up and liked it a lot, just in terms of the open world, driving and shooting police chase mechanics but none of my irl friends had heard of it, it's great to see this game come up for me
me and a friend of mine LOVED this game back in the day, we'd spend hours and hours on either his ps1 or mine playing it
I used to put some music while driving in this game back in the day. Exploring the city and it’s surroundings was an amazing experience that I never had before. I still play it from time to time just for the nostalgia. Great review.
I had this as a kid and the BEST way to play was always with my twin as P2, I'd drive, he'd shoot, wed work together and got through most of the game as like 10 year olds. It's amazing to see it here because I've never been heard of another person who played this, and I'm glad that as a proper game it still has some merit.
I'd be down for a modern reimagining of this game. Like a proper (road) police simulator with different nations you could play within that have their various mechanics and situations coming to the fore.
Now this one is the trip down memory lane. I managed to beat the game, but like you said - it relentlessly hard in some instances. Maybe even more than Driver. I also remember this game having one of the coolest cheats ever - Silly Speech. It's like some drunk dude commenting the situations in the game.
This game is kinda like Chase HQ but 3d. It's pretty cool for it's time and it feels really nostalgic. It's the kind of simple premise with arcade gameplay that modern developers don't do anymore.
Hey modern devs still do that all the time! It's just not as likely in the most marketed or generally accessible games someone might pick off a shelf (though digital marketplaces do a good job at times).
Cracking video! Loved this game as a kid, it was my first experience with free roam before GTA San Andreas came along & blew my mind
Me and my best friend used to play this, he found it for a few pounds in a local charity shop in Romford UK. He passed away this year at 34, seeing this brought back some funny memories.
I also loved exploring in Driver 2. I never played the actual game lol. Midnight Club as well.
me and my brother used to spend the whole day playing coop,
he would drive the car and i would shoot the tires, ah man, so many great memories!
I got a special place in my heart for this game. Played Driver and GTA, now playing a game as the police? That was a win for me.
I remember loving this game!
Played it multiplayer co-op with my brother.
I was driving, he turned on the sirens and shot the gun.
Problem was the limited ammo so after few minutes he had notihi g to do.
One of the first open-world games I ever played. I also found out a while ago that there was supposed to be a sequel on the PS2 and Xbox (which would've had cutscenes with a John Bunnell model), but it got cancelled.
Man, the theme song takes me back some 😭😭
Damn, this is game is on our shelf and I've always dismissed it as a shovelware B-game but I'm amazed at the map. It has a really surprising amount of fidelity.
This is one of the few PS1 games I actually played as a kid, I remember my friend having it and we played it pretty often together
On the DUI mission, you can use guns ONLY if you hit the driver. You can't miss. Only the bus mission doesn't allow you to shoot the target vehicle.
As an Oregonian, I can really appreciate the Oregon references!
Oh man what a blast from the past! I recognise that cover from anywhere
From the title and thumbnail, I thought that this was promotion material for an entire spinoff of a driver game. Didn’t know this was an entire franchise with its own tv show & game.
Well, the game itself felt like Driver, so maybe this is an unofficial Driver spin-off??
From the name i thought this game would be very silly but it looks quite fun actually. I also never thought i would hear someone on youtube ever mention Ashland Oregon.
I grew up with this game so I knew what to expect. I was curious to know if the map was based on a real-life town like Driver did with their maps, hence the mention, haha
I've been to Ashland once. The water tasted weird.
10:42 I've been looking for that kouki AE86 police chase footage for years
0:12 As soon as I heard the police radio I expectes Earl and Randy to xome on and sing "Bad Boys, Bad Boys. Watcha gon' do."
I always believed as a kid, this was a “spinoff” of Driver.
Great video as always dude!
Another classic that I probably spent more time playing the demo of back then, than I do playing most full games I buy today 😂
If you get commendations on each mission you unlock either new vehicles, weapons or funny cheats codes to use in free play which can change up the play style
god i would love this map to be ported to Beam NG. exploring this map gives me such nostalgia and mission 8 gives me PTSD
One of the best PS1 games ever made to be honest. The difficulty sucked, but it's doable.
Still play this game on the regular. It just has something that other games don't. "Unit 1 stop relaxing" is in my head forever!
used to play with my pal. one person shoots and the other drives. we were addicted!
Can you imagine the crazy backlash a game like this would get these days? I wish games like this would get revived for the REEEEEEEE's alone.
look at all those polygons, there sooo nice.
I forgot this show existed, let alone had any idea there was a PS1 game.
Excited to see what its about!
Oh my God, somebody actually talked about WCPS! I always thought this was a rather unknown title but had it on psone back when I was a kid and honestly loved it. Some of the missions were pretty damn hard, the timer allocation coming down to mere seconds left. I was also always wondering how'd this look on a different platform (eg PC or PS2) or what would the developers do with a sequel. The psone obviously couldn't perfectly handle the action and more often than not the framerate suffered greatly
I still have my original Australian release of this game for my PlayStation. Loved it in the day. Haven't given it much of a chance since.
Bro... Thanks for reviewing this game. Got I remember it soo much, my childhood, that was the gta on ps1 without walking
I got this game through the weirdest way ever.
Had a PLAY Magazine as a very young kid and noticed this game had really fking weird cheats, like an underwater world theme or a halloween world theme or a cheat to get a tank or the silly speech cheat.
So I kept my eyes open for years and eventually found it at a flea market stall, stashed away with other unknown titles and B-grade and C-grade games.
Had lots of fun, the cheats were just ridiculous too. But yes, it's HARD. Unfairly hard.
Childhood memories UNLOCKED
I remember playing this as a kid and screwing around in Free Roam. Especially the Low Gravity cheat. 😌
OMG I remember this game!! i got it on a rental from a movie gallery. i remember this game because of 1 easter egg where you drive by a donut shop and the girl on the radio says "mmmmm dooonuts" which always made me laugh.
Oh, hey, I was thinking of doing a review of this game after I (eventually) get my Motorhead review done.
Wanna know what's interesting? The game was originally supposed to have a PS2, Xbox, and even a Dreamcast port at one point, along with a sequel, but they were all cancelled, probably because the show was about to get cancelled the following year!
I loved this game as a kid. It was tough but i replayed it multiple times, and just enjoyed exploring the map trying different vehicles and cheats
I just enjoyed driving around as a kid seeing what I could find.
I used to play this 2 player co-op with my friend whenever I went to his house back in the early 2000s. He didn't have a PS2 yet, so this was his GTA3 lol
I enjoyed this game as kid! I always thought it was funny when the woman would say "this place gives me the creeps" when driving by the church. Also, "you are authorized to use the rocket launcher" on the tank mission, as if just having a bazooka in all cop cars is normal is hilarious
This brings me back, my parents used to play this game back in the day and i remember one mission they got stuck on where they were chasing a car but gets ambushed by two black cars and have to escape. I did play the freeroam mode since thats the only mode i want to do since i was a kid back then. Sadly, i the disc broke because everytime i tried to freeroam the map doesnt load properly and instantly totals my car
My cousin had this game and in my mind I remembered it looking so incredibly realistic
Man this game was my absolute jam back in the day.
Plus I used to watch the TV series its based off and the narration by the police officer for both is just great.
My friend had this game when i was growing up in the early 00's, we spent quite a few hours on it but never managed to get that far. Suprised it can be beaten in around an hour. Also i always assumed the city in the game was New York, didnt know it's fictional.
As an American I definitively state that cops here DO NOT in fact shoot rockets/RPGs at fleeing suspects.
Even the most corrupt of police officers don't go around shooting fucking rockets at suspects, who does this game think we are?
Great review. I used to love the TV show back in the day. 👍
Worse vehicle was the bomb squad truck. It stopped like a freight train and did 360s with a simple turn.
I always had my doubts if this game used the exact same graphic engines from Driver games due to how they deal with a lot of stuff: the poor rendering distance, the choppy framerate, the rain and light effects, among other things.
But both being open world, city based, driving games targeting the same hardware I guess these similarities were to be expected after all.
Ive never played this game but I think itd be interesting if a new wildest police chases game was made where it takes place set in 1980s/1990s LA county where a lot of the episodes were made and features you doing the most popular police chases from the show with additional fictional chases and multiplayer like a cops vs robbers to add content.
OH MY GOD I USED TO HAVE THIS GAME WHEN I WAS KID
absolute core memory unlocked
Played the hell out of the demo of this game as a young lad
Same. Mission 7 was the only available mission in the demo.
Same when I was child after playing Driver, GTA and Urban Chaos, I had and obsession on open world games, that I tried almost everything related or similar on the PSX
And this one I have a lot and cool memories of this game
My first PlayStation game and one of my favorites as a kid!
0:08 Tune!
never heard of this game
looks impressive for a PS1 game
Love the review man , never heard of this game before .
Are you gonna do a FlatOut 2 review?
Definitely gonna LEGALLY emulate this game, i gotta try it
I unnironically think, to this day, this is the best looking open world city. The textures ovbiously made from pictures of real building blocks and the baked "global illumination" for diferent hours of the day makes it incredibly immersive for a ps1 game. Somehow it captures the atmosphere of a "hard boiled cop in a sweaty shirt" movie from the nineties like no other game ever, except probably Max Payne 1
Used to beat this game all the time as a kid. Especially since I had no memory card when I first got the PS1 so I would have to redo it all the time lol
The Bomb Squad mission always pissed me off
I was stuck on the second mission because I didn’t realize you can follow the guy until the blue bar fills up. Dumb mechanic imo
This reminds me of the World Super Police game I got for PS2 from a discount bin as a kid. Either it was truly difficult or I just sucked as a kid but I never beat it
You just reminded me this game exists!
Loved this game back in the day
Always wanted to play this growing up. Despite it's age it's graphically quite impressive for the PS1, I'd wager it looks even better then the Driver Series!
I remember completing all the missions on this game was good fun!
There is an Ashland here in PA, but it doesn't look anything like this lol. But this is a pretty fun game!
Good Lord I completely forgot about this game.
I rented this so much from Blockbuster my father burned me a copy at work.
Great review I spent powers playing this game!
this game looks so much like driver 2, damage models and all
shocking to learn its not developed by the Driver Guys at all
the precinct ..... check it out it takes this old classic to the next level ;)
oh boy i loved this game as a child
nice i can get my childhood game back . because i forgot the game name . thanks mate
I used to own a games shop and World's Scariest Police Chases on ps2 was always sitting on the shelf. Could you do a video on that?
I rented this on a weekend back then.... I don't recall the game being hard at all.... beat it on a weekend rental. Wasnt particularly good though either.
Loved this game .the v last game I bought for ps1
Lol, I remember renting this game from Block Busters.
I bought a bootleg copy of this in mexico and it didnt work on my ps2. I really wanted to play it i had no idea what i missed out on
I love this game as a kid
my god this game was hard, brutally hard
When is space invaders review coming?
I always watch the TV show and I love this game and played it a lot
Wow, a game I didn't even know existed.
I looks surprisingly decent for a game based off a TV series. Makes me wonder if it was originally supposed to be a different game and they slapped the TV series name on it last minute.
Especially late in the life cycle of the PS1, though the game was released just before the last season of the TV-show so I think it was planned as a tie-in from the start.
