Basically, - siren wasn't going off - dude found the manual siren-go-off button - held the button down to warn people as tornado approached

The only way they could figure out for it to continuously sound was to use the test button, which has to be held down for the siren to sound. As soon as you release the button, the siren turns off.

I live in eastern Canada. We rarely get tornados around here and the idea of sirens seems exotic and strange to me. I imagine things like snow tires, ice scrapers, and snowfall in feet are equally strange to you.
The only time I've ever experienced snowfall deep enough to be measured by more a few inches was back in....I wanna say 2020 or 2021. This was in a small city in southern Oklahoma. It felt like the city "shut down" for at least a couple days because they were NOT ready to handle such a large amount of snow (let alone ANY meaningful amount of snow at all 🤣).

I think the paper mill might have a shift whistle, but I'm not sure.

Scott AFB, May of 1984, we had a strong tornado heading right at the base, and I did what I had to do. Our base exchange got destroyed. 76 cars in the parking lot were damaged or destroyed, with no serious injuries. My phone bank in our base weather station lit up like a Christmas tree. All nine incoming lines, including the hotline from Military Airlift Command (MAC) Headquarters. Good times, good times. Got a Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) for that one.
In June 2009, the county I live in lost power, and the sirens in my small town were inoperable. The local cop, and a few county sheriffs were driving through town with their sirens on. That was the worst storm that I and my neighbors had ever encountered.

Well, the blower's air intake happens to be in close proximity to the belt. The smoke was likely pretty hot, and heat rises, so even if the actual roots blower assembly had stopped, the smoke would still end up wafting out of the horn. Also if it was the chopper motor going out, the siren would most likely decrease in pitch, not increase.

Also if it was the chopper motor going out, the siren would most likely decrease in pitch, not increase.

good grief, ive subbed and discovered something that was obviously missing from my life lol. I now live in France and Ive noticed a lot of effort goes into PA at flea markets and such. I hazard a guess they are not classed as sirens but I suppose they could be utilised as such. I will start noticing them a lot more now!!!
