goat brothers Moxie & Moose

- Plum taught us an important lesson this week. But not before giving us a bit of a sleepless night. After the vet came to disbud the kids (remove the cells that would become horns if left) Plum suddenly decided one of her newborn kids was not hers. When we put them together in a stall, she pushed him roughly with her head and nipped at his ears. If they were out and about the farm she let him nurse, but she looked at him with obvious confusion, clearly trying to decide why suddenly he seemed unfamiliar. It is so hard to see one of your favorite goats be mean to their baby. Mama Plum is my lap goat. She was one of 5 kids born to Rhubarb and we bottle fed her twice a day to make sure she was getting enough milk as the smallest of the kids. I knew she was just confused and needed some time to work it out. As night fell, we discussed our options. Leaving Moose in a stall with his mom who was being mean was not an option, it was just too dangerous. We considered sleeping with them, but that meant keeping a careful watch all night. We couldn’t put him in a stall alone and didn’t want to take both her kids away if she was still being loving to one. We decided to leave Plum and her kids Moose & Moxie, out in the big center of the barn (with the end doors shut) where they had more space to come back together. I gave her lots of kisses even though I was mad because it was clearly confusing for her that the tops of her babies heads smelled different even though their tails smelled like hers! I was restless all night but when we went out in the morning, she was loving both kids equally again! Plum was relaxed and happy, the worry gone from her eyes. She almost looked thankful as she settled on my lap for a snuggle. It reminded me of saying my teacher once shared regarding dealing with people who are challenging, “consider maybe they are not GIVING you a hard time, maybe they are HAVING a hard time.” Plum was having a hard time sorting out complex competing emotions and intuitions, she just needed some time and space to sort them out and make sense of how she was feeling. Life can be complicated, perhaps the same is true for each of us and those we love, a little time and space can be a gentle gift that makes a huge difference.
Thanks for visiting farm friends.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I just love it when one launches him or herself into the air with all four feet going different directions yet lands safely! Precious!

All that leaping and flying really wears a little goat out! So sweet ❤
Precious and charming.
Maine is wonderful in the spring. This Cumberland farm paints memories of my parents' farm up in Salem, Maine. Mom is in a nursing home in Falmouth now. Alas, she really can not remember much of the years before. But the new grass and young maple leaves of Sunflower Farm evoke in me those happy/sad pictures of Maine years past.
PS One of my all-time favorite books is Henry Beston's Northern Farm, a journal of a too-brief year in Maine. I have read it numerous times since my college days in northern New Hampshire. Poignant and joyous and sad too. Highly recommended.
Thanks I’m going to order that right now! I’m sorry your mom’s world is changing. And happy you both shared warm Maine memories. If she wants to visit, we’ll get a tiny goat in her lap!
I will check with Sedgewood about their taking-a-resident-out policy. Even if yes, I am not sure my mother can make the trip, even to Cumberland. But I will ask. Thank you so very much.
Moose and Moxie must be practicing there routine for the Olympics because they have just about got it synchronized!❤
Wow, they are all beautiful gorgeous animals.
Moxie and Moose! Having the time of their lives.

We are rooting for you from a goat farm in Japan.
More adorable babies and I'm so glad things worked out for this little family unit!
They're so adorbs 🥰❤️💯
They are so cute!!! Thanks for sharing with us!
Thank you!
What a fun day they had! Adorable 💘🐐🐐💘
When a household pet animal has to go to the vet clinic, and they come home, they sometimes smell different enough that other animals in the house will regard them with suspicious hostility - "It's like I don't even know you anymore!" - until the alien scent wears off. Depending on what, if any, chemicals or drugs you use in the debudding, there may have been a difference in how Moose smelled as well as how he looked. That would be very confusing to poor Plumb! (Though why she reacted that way to Moose and not Moxie is also a mystery...)
Thank you for being gentle and patient with her until she figured it out!
They are so cute!❤️🐐
Such beautiful brothers. They are so much fun to watch.❤❤
These little babies make my day!! ♥️
Wow, I didnt know goats didnt recognize their kids if that bud smell was there! Good to know that it all worked out! ❤🌻🐐
They recognize them by smell, sight and their voice but if any one of those changes it can throw things off. Thanks!! Yes, a big relief!

San Diego sends: Yup! They’re at a Frat party - off campus, of course.
I hope Allagash and Eustis are doing well.
They are doing great! Strong and sweet!!
If you weren't so far away (Germany), I would have visited you a long time ago with your consent. You have to experience something like this live. Thank you for making people's day at least for a few minutes.
I hope you can visit one day!!
Awww💝💝💝💝💝
So funny how they can’t just jump off they have to go flying 10 feet in the air first. :-). Hope does this happen very often when one of the three indicators gets the mama confused? It sounds as if this was the first time, at least for the buds, and seems of the three it’d happen most with them.
Sometimes the moms are confused for half an hour or so but Plum was sticking to it longer. luckily we’ve always been able to work it out.
❤❤❤
🥰
wow... they can run when they want to. Were they afraid of the mower?
The wind blew over something outside their fence
Have you ever had a season with a high ratio of bucks to does? It may not actually be so but that was my thought.
We have so many more boys this year. Still 9 more to kid, maybe it will even out?
Well, now, this Lesson Learned is a clear sign pointing to the book you must write so that I can open to the right page anytime. For now, I'm just marking your posts. Thank you❤
You are very kind friend!
Parkour!
Oh brother, where art thou?
Synchronized goats, new sport?? Don't get any cuter.. unless you're a cat, dog, squirrel...😁
🤣
A bit of worrying, but it thankfully all worked out.
I love baby goats.i love goats period. They always look like they have a question
🥰
Oh, to be a baby goat at the Sunflower Farm!
They're so cute and energetic 💕
Did I read that correctly that Plum still sits on your lap? I would think the adult goats would be way to big for that. About how much do they (or her specifically)weigh at this point? I just recently watched your video from a few years ago of Plum as a baby goat and later as an adolescent goat. She was too cute.
Yes she still likes to. She weighs about 60 pounds.
Why do the horns need to be removed ?
It can be dangerous for domesticated goats to have horns as they can hurt each other of get them stuck in fences and tear them off.
Wheeeeeeeeee!!!
